Remember,it's PRESEASON ! No gameplanning is involved and most the players running around in Patriots' Jerseys will no be on the field on Sundays. The Coaching Staff is playing this to keep the squad healthy for September. We would all like to see more but this is a veteran team and September is more important than August on the Football Calendar.

The panic button has been buzzing for many hours now....

good points...but we had our 1st team D with the exception of AD and Harrison against Tampa's back up QB and they rolled all over us.

Go back and look at our second preseason game of the 2004 season. The Pats were at full strength on defense and played into the third quarter and got rolled over by the Bengals first and second team offenses.

We were 0-2 last year at this time. Miami was 2-0.

As bad as Hobbs and Bryant looked last night, atleast we have a young stud in Wheatley who continues to look good. Wheatley is better than both of those guys right now and has earned a starting corner spot.

When the 1st team defense was in the game (first 3 series), what was the rushing average for TB (minus the reverse)? Under 4.

During the same time, what was the yards-per-completion for TB? Under 8. Take away the 33 yard reception on a short crossing route? Under 5. Remember, this is YPC and not YPA.

Not saying that the Pats played a stellar game. Just saying keep it in context. The Pats played a vanilla zone and the Bucs were content with constantly taking the checkdown. Good for them. Did we really need to know if Griese could throw a 3 yard dump pass?

That is the difference in the preseason. You have 3 goals: get your vets some reps, get your new guys in gametime situations and evaluate battles for roster positions/roles. I really only saw 2 plays that were cause for concern...the reverse had no backside containment (Woods?) and the missed tackle on the Bryant crossing route (Mayo). Hardly a tragedy.

Kinda off-topic, but the teams that really "play to win" (and not to train/evaluate) are tempting the football gods. Mangini's decision to kick a chip-shot FG to go to overtime rather than going for the TD is a great example. A coach WANTING to go to overtime in a preseason game? Karma fired a shot across his bow with the FG hitting the upright. Next time the punishment will certainly be more severe.

It's amazing how some of the veteran poster's posts stand out for the clarity and insight. Nice one Rob!

If the regular season shows signs of weakness, I guess posters like you will have a tough time trying to calm down such nervous fans who panic so easily during the exhibtion games. Good luck!

Warrick Dunn busting right up the middle for 10+ yards didn't bother you at all?

Nope. Pats D will occasionally "lose" smaller backs behind blockers. As long as the next level fills appropriately and if I'm think of the same play, Dunn was wrapped up before doing too much damage.

BTW, you may be a little off on the distance since Dunn had 3 carries for 12 yards with a long of 7 (the play in question I'm guessing).

I remember a few years ago ( a SB season IIRC) we lost to Cincy 35-3 or somthing..... It is the preseason.

That's possible, I have the game at home on Tivo.... seemed like 10+, I know he blew right through the line and was into the secondary before he was stopped.

For the record, I'm not in panic mode either, but I still don't like to see that kind of stuff, even in pre-season.

They played the most vanilla D possible, all the way through the first half. Then when the second half started, they started mixing it up more with the second teamers. They are trying to figure out who is going to be on this team, not shut out the preseason bucs.... Greise himself when asked what kind of looks they were giving him on that opening 17 play drive, smiled and said not much that's what NE is known for, not giving too much away in the preseason.

I dont think the Pats called one audible, and TB used audibles all game. It's pretty easy to attack the other side of the ball when you see what they are going to do and know they aren't going to change it.

It's not the score that bothers me - it's the way they played. Uninspired, lackluster football. From the "savvy" vets on down to the players desperate for a spot on the roster. It's a concern - it should be a concern. They looked - um - I 'dunno - like they were going through the motions.

The panic has set in and the "life long fans" are on their way to the life boats....

I guess I did not get the memo that the Pats had been renamed to Titanic...
