Interesting note by Doug Kyed from yesterday in his Sunday notes, with Kyed catching up with former Patriots staffer Joe Kim, who told him that it was Patricia who stepped in after Nick Caserio departed and was apparently behind the selections of both Rhamondre Stevenson and Christian Barmore:

I always felt this was the case.

Wasn't there a thing where he was the signature on checks?

I know Patricia is an incredibly smart guy, but I still don't get why Belichick entrusted him with so many important jobs in the Patriots' organization that he had no prior experience with.

I initially backed making him the OC because I trusted Belichick, but it was clear Patricia was out of his depth there. Based on on the Pats drafted and built a roster post Caserio, I think he was out of his depth at GM too. Barmore and Stevenson were good picks though (only among a few of the actual good picks during that era of the Patriots).

I kinda feel bad for Patricia to be honest. Seems like Bill gave him way too much to do. Then we all beat him up for being bad at it.
The logic was pretty simple. Belichick had a type of player he wanted and Patricia understood it. I don't think Wolf was ever on the same page because he is very wedded to metrics, and Belichick was not.

All this was pretty well known at the time, Patricia was the Assistant to the Head Coach.

Eliot Wolf joined in the same year but was only hired as a consultant.

The following year, Wolf was promoted to Director of Scouting. I forget the timeline of the famous talk between Kraft and Belichick when Kraft held a press conference and said he required Belichick to collaborate more. Did that happen in 2021? Or 2022?

Was that the explanation for Wolf's promotion?

Did Wolf's promotion mean Patricia's demotion? (Of course, Patricia took on OC duties in 2022, which was Wolf's first year as director, so this could have been coincidence. This might also mean that Patricia took on the Scouting duties only temporarily as the Patriots were wrong-footed with Caserio's departure, and they didn't have another GM type in the pipeline.

Wasn't Ziggy the Pinhead the de-facto GM in 2021...?

It appears Bill didn't trust anyone he didn't have a hundred year relationship with.

Think @Family nailed it here... Trust.

Bills circle had shrunk so much by then, he only wanted to work with people he felt were loyal to him. Not the team per se. To him.

Because he was in a power struggle with Jonathan. When you’re in conflict, you look to your trusted allies.

Wolf was hired almost a year before Caesario left, we also know some about Mayo now, so there was a transition plan already in place. They knew a year prior Nick wanted out of his Patriot contract, but he was denied permission to interview for jobs.

I think Bill utilized Matt and his guys to manage the offense because Jonathan was pushing for a West Coast system and more control. Bill didn’t want to hire an outsider who could eventually succeed him as head coach in a year, or if he did decide to hire an outsider who was also a friend and he got fired after the season, he would be screwing someone over.

There is also the strong possibility Bill or the Krafts wanted Obie but he was under contract for another year at Alabama. Who knows… but Patricia has developed into a pretty good defensive coach.

Bob announced “collaboration,” Bill said in an interview the last few years he was no longer in charge of personnel. It was clearly a dysfunctional relationship and time for a change.

and now MattP is back at his best spot, DC, and is one of the best in the country

"We all"? Hello? Hello?

My take has never changed. Patricia is limited as anyone is, but he is a good football coach. Look at him at Ohio State. Patricia's worse performance was as OC, but he was still better than Bill O'Brien or AVP (look at the stats). Pats players and coaches like Matt, only the Boston Media took out the knives.

So much for people blaming Belichick's mistakes n Wolf.

Patricia's biggest error was yelling at Detroit media on day 1. LOL.

The funny thing about him is that he used to stack WRs and have them run routes in the same area. And we laughed at him for it.

But then in the ensuing years I've seen teams design their offense the exact same way. I now tend to think Patricia was modeling an offense he would hate to coach against as a defensive coordinator, and judging by how well Seattle used that play all last year, I can see why defenses hate it.

It just seems so dangerous and goofy, however.

I'm glad for him. I saw his interview on JE11's podcast. He's had a lot of ups and downs in his career. We now know he was not fit to be an OC, and that his run as HC at DET wasn't successful. Yet he won 3 SBs as DC and is now doing well as a DC at the college level. He's got a lot going for him. Seems like Josh perhaps he's hit his peak being a coordinator, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The interview pointed out he did take a lot of chances in his career jumps along the way, and of course while it hasn't been perfect he's had great success when things lined up well for him.

Personally I wish he told Bill to f-off when Bill asked him to be OC, but again, Matt is a risk taker. He probably figured that even if things went bad he'd still learn a lot from the experience. Glad he's doing well now.
