As Chiefs process loss, is their Super Bowl window closing?
Will Travis Kelce retire? Will Patrick Mahomes be ready for Week 1? Here's the state of the Chiefs, and it's not pretty.www.espn.com
They're finding out it's hard to win in the NFL without the refs cheating for them.
He hasn't been that guy for 2 years now. Then 6-8 happened. A part of that is his cast declining, but yes. Another is due to decline. However to say he is a mid QB now is kind of silly. He is clearly not that. Still plays like a top 5 guy and usually makes the play at the end, though not this year. But I'm curious how he will look even if he just loses 2-3% of his current athleticism permanently. QB's don't run like other players. They dance around not cut. It requires much more freedom of movement than just speed and a sharp powerful step. If that is impaired, how will he look?
Agree. Also include an oft-injured o-line and a HC who might be running out of innovative ideas/play calls. Over years 6-8 seems like every other pass play is this sandlot play drawn in the dirt. No coordination. No rhythm.Wish him a speedy recovery, but can't help but be curious how he will look when he comes back, like everyone else i imagine.
Personally I never bought as much as others into the Mahomes decline narrative. Not to say i didn't believe it to a degree, but there were SO many factors involved. The NFL adapting to his new play style (especially as more offenses embraced a more 'school yard' style. The decline of his cast. Often people don't point out how absolutely loaded his offensive cast was early in his career. Reid's play call becoming predictable. Everyone now employs that TE 'I block for half a second then run a route' thing. Everyone is ready for it now. Mahomes fake going out of bounds. And add in the luck factor too as KC was historically lucky.
The early KC offense an unprecedented amalgamation of factors all at once that set an impossible standard no one could maintain. For those first 3 years when Mahomes was healthy (which he wasn't at times in year 2 which is why his stats fell that year) the offense was a juggernaut overall for all those reasons. So you can't really hold them as the 'Mahomes standard'. He's more like the mix of Mahomes you've seen in years 4-5.

Nobody is wrong more than that guy. Not even Charley Casserly.

I agree. We saw something very similar w/ Tom here in 2013 and 2019 O-lines were a mess and lost some talent at receiver, TE, and RB.It's easier to look innovative when you have Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in their primes ala 2019. Now, not so much. Just sayin'...

Maybe i'll ask my good friends at ChiefsPlanet and see what they think?
He won’t be the same. Stick a fork in their dynasty it’s over.
I'm not going to say its over, because they have the 2 most important things for success, a great coach and quarterback, but this is where you go from climbing Everest to climbing K2, the difficulty is greatly enhanced. It's what separates the Brady/Belichick Dynasty from any other. They have to build another Dynasty with only a couple of pieces intact and serious cap issues. The NFL is built to bring great teams back to earth. The best players and coaches are leaving or have already left for better money and opportunities, and you have to keep generating coaches and players to fill those voids. And you also have to deal with the missed opportunities, such as the Patriots losses to the Giants and Eagles, while still generating enough opportunities to win those championships in the second decade. The Patriots were able to do it, and to demonstrate how much work you have to do to get there, the only remaining Patriot other than Brady who was on their 4th Lombardi team was Vince Wilfork, who was a part of their 2004 and 2014 Lombardi winners, they had to replace the other 51 players, and almost all of their coaching staff. Doing the same is going to take a monumental effort from KC, and it's highly unlikely they get there. I think Mahomes will come back and be a really good players for a number of seasons, but I doubt he will ever be as good as his best seasons again.
I think Mahomes has been getting by on a lot of natural talent, the kind one gets as the son of a MLB player. I think we'll now see if he has the same kind of burning desire TFB12 had, since this injury is probably the worst set-back of his career and re-hab will be a real challenge, as will be dealing with his limitations post-rehab.
We'll also see KC's team-building chops, or lack thereof.
This is the biggest thing in bold. Lots of smaller "run around" guys fall off as they have injuries into their 30s. I expect Mahomes will be the same.I think we'll now see if he has the same kind of burning desire TFB12 had, since this injury is probably the worst set-back of his career and re-hab will be a real challenge, as will be dealing with his limitations post-rehab.
Um..that WAS Nick Wright. Wasn't it?Nick Wright gives him a run for his money.
