I don't know if this true or not, but shouldn't the Colts wait to see if Jones doesn't turn into a pumpkin later in the season? I would let him play out the year and if he continues to play at a high level, franchise him and then sign him to a deal.

This is really making Daboll look bad.

Could well do, they are on the rise as much as it hurts me to say it.
Yup. I said back a couple weeks ago when they were under .500 that there was zero % chance anyone is winning the West but the Chiefs.
Pains me too, but they look like the best team in the league right now.

Daboll's pretty good at doing that all by himself.
Don't know what he is like as a person, but he seems ok. Got to feel for him, I bet he is counting down the days until he is sacked. Then time to grab a OC job.

I feel like many times we see QB's journey to a new team, have a hot year, then flare out. That's a big contract to pull the trigger on, but if they think they have lightening, then by all means.

When is the last time a QB flamed out on their original team and then went on to become a franchise QB for another team?

I think that's just a projection, so it's not a real contract yet.

Historically the standout examples that come to mind are Drew Brees and Steve Young, but that level of success is rare. (Honestly, it's rare even for QBs who stay with their original teams!) More recently, honorable mention to Sam Darnold, Ryan Tannehill, and anybody else drafted by the Jets or Dolphins.

It feels like it's becoming more common. Geno. Mayfield. Flacco is the new Testaverde.

Flacco is a bit different, as he had success with his original team. Since he started bouncing around he’s had good games to start with his new team, but he usually flames out pretty quickly after a couple of decent starts.

Yeah, I just thought it was funny to see him still bouncing around the way Testaverde did.

I think it’s weird how he can be pretty effective his first couple of games with a new team, then flame out so quickly. It’s not like the opposition needs to get film on him, he’s been in the league 100 years. You would think he would get more comfortable with his new team as he gets more starts, but he seems to go the other way. Unless it’s a physical thing, and his old body just wears down really quickly.

His immediate impact is to raise the enthusiasm and level of play of those around him.
Then they settle back down to their natural level and drag him down with them.

Goff and Mayfield off the top of my head.

There really aren't many examples. And like you said, there might be QB's that have their 15 minutes only to flame out.

But Rich Gannon is probably the best example. Gannon would've been at top QB in the NFL for a long time had he'd been linked up with Gruden earlier in his career.

Today, Franchise QB's are too loosely thrown around, but Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones (so far) and Baker Mayfield have been successful.

I wouldn't put Goff on this list because he had 4 consecutive winning seasons, 3 straight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl appearance during his time with the Rams. The Rams felt there was opportunity to get a more talented QB in Matt Stafford.

Speaking of Matt Stafford, he only had 3 playoff appearances (all loses) in his 12 years with the Lions. That's pretty bad. In fact, he still has a losing record for his career. He only made the Pro Bowl once with the Lions and no All Pro's.

I guess we need to know what the criteria is.

I feel like Darnold is a great example of what I'm trying to get at: they march out competent offenses on teams that win a lot of games, but when push comes to shove and it falls on the offense to win, they show their true ceiling. With people announcing both Daniels and Mayfield as leaders of potent, potential SB-winning offenses, it has appeared to me that these QB's, more often than not, prove their shortcomings when it matters most, such as the post-season.

It's why I've had a hard time buying into the Bucs hype. Granted, Evans is now injured, so is Godwin, but Evans alone can create a career it seems.

The main reason I try to make that distinction is within the context of: should a team really shell out a massive contract for a QB of that caliber? They cost you cap space. They cost you draft position because they are decent and don't lose games for you. A lot gets tied up in contracts like that. Now, this is a speculated contract, but for the sake of discussion, it ain't the first time a team has teetered on the edge of making such a decision.
