DRAFT Welcome to New England, Vanderbilt LS Julian Ashby

Cut Cardona after June 1 and its a $1 million savings. Not sure what this is about.

I unironically applaud this pick. Joe Cardona is 33, and they just secured the #1 long snapper in the class with a late 7th-rounder.

Could they have signed him as a UDFA? Maybe, but if I were the top UDFA LS I would choose to sign with a team that didn't have a quality veteran incumbent. And getting anybody that likely to make the team and contribute at 251 is a good return on investment.

Wonder is taking Ashby means that Cardona has Enlistment Commitments that will keep him from the team.

Love it. Time for competition at LS. Cardona has been great, but competitions is a good thing.

I honestly didn’t think he was that old. He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, but if the kid is roughly as good and saves you a chunk of cash for a few years then you might as well.

Cardona is the last player who was on the team when they won a Super Bowl, also. Dumping him completely severs any connection the locker room has to past title contention in NE.

This is my concern, too.

But it reminds me of when BB took down all the photos because it was time for the team to stop living in the past.

It’s a bit odd because Vrabel himself is a former Super Bowl winning Patriot as a player, and Josh McDaniels obviously coordinated multiple title wins also. But I suppose it’s different for a coach.

Wow I've been out of it... I saw "LS" and thought... what's that?

They've had competition for LS previously. Tucker Addington each of the past 2 years comes to mind.

Not to pat myself on the back for my draft guru expertise, but I called this move on Friday. Sure I was talking about drafting a long snapper in the second round, but I am just a bit more of a riverboat gambler than the Patriots.
