Seems fair. No more coin flip stuff
NFL owners approved a rule change allowing both teams to possess the ball in overtime during the regular season. That will match the postseason rule, with sudden death deciding the game if it remains tied after each team has a possession.

Regular-season overtime, though, will remain a maximum of 10 minutes with the game declared a tie after that.

I'd like it more with 15 mins. Going to get too many ties.

Worst OT in sports. It's a boring product.

Walk off goal, HR, or an NBA buzzer beater is so much more entertaining than this garbage.

This is legit not April Fools?
I was planning on sitting my phone down all day.

Do the NCAA OT rules. That's the best one IMO.

i wouldn't mind a variation of this........starting with the ball on your own 45? opponent's 45?

bring a little more nuance and strategy into the NCAA OT, rather than just 'who can score the most'

Should the team that wins the coin flip defer so they know whether they have to score a TD or FG when they get it ?
Good question. I imagine the stats-nerds on each team are running the numbers on OT history right now.

no, because they’d get third posession

That's the argument everyone had after Super Bowl 58. I would take the ball because then I get 3rd possession if we are still tied after the first 2 possessions.

It is a situation where the media - and the fandom - will call you a genius if your strategy works and an idiot if it doesn't when fact is there are a million uncontrollable elements at play.

I don't see how any of those things are more entertaining than a walk-off touchdown.....

You're not wrong but the walk off touchdown was basically eliminated. It's possible but much more unlikely under the new rules now.

True sudden death was great. This PC/fairness crap is garbage.
It is... we never complained during our superbowl winning period.. the league never made any rule changes to benefit us specially.

All 3 things you listed (Walk off goal, HR, or an NBA buzzer beater) are "possible" but not necessarily all that likely.

A walk off goal is a guaranteed in the NHL playoffs, but many NHL OT games go to the shootout, which is nothing but a cheap gimmick.

A walk off HR in baseball happens, but is pretty rare. Ditto the NBA "buzzer beater".

This must be the most we've ever agreed. Shanny made the right call. The only advantage from either choice is taking it first and getting it third. There's no actual mechanical benefit to taking it second.
