RIP Kenneth Sims

The only defensive player selected by the Patriots 1/1 in the draft.

RIP #77

RIP #77

I remember reading a Sims story pre draft. He was in High School I believe, and his coach accused him of being lazy. He lined up for the blocking sled drill, and proceeded to hit the sled so hard, he broke it. The coach was speechless. My thoughts got out the Ken’s family & friends.

I was psyched when the Pats won/lost the Toilet Bowl so they would get the number one pick and Kenny Sims. He never came close to being what he was projected to be. I think it had something to do with his off the field habits.
Anyway RIP Kenny "gameday" Sims

Yep, these guys really pay for their football lives.
I think he battled substance abuse post-career.

Such high hopes for this player whose potential was seemingly unlimited at the time.

But other than the last year of his rookie contract, he massively underperformed.

The Pats also picked up Lester Williams that same draft from the U.
I thought their DL would be stacked for the next 5 years with Kenny Gameday and Lester to go along with an aging but underrated Julius Adams. Both Sims and Williams were, let's say underperformers.

I used to curse Sims, expected him to be better.
My expectations may have been too high.

RIP Game Day; now you don't have to show-up on Sundays either.

Sure wish we had beaten the Baltimore Colts on the last day of the 1981 regular season.

That was the season I became a Patriots fan. Anyway, I was all in on drafting Marcus Allen, but I remember the Globe explaining to me how drafting Ken Sims was the smart move. May he rest in peace.

He had issues with coke at U of T and during his career with the Patriots. That certainly did not help him be able to reach his potential.

Looks like he was a HS coach later in life.

Hope he finally beat his addictions.
