I think the 2024 Chiefs have a case for the top 3 worst teams to ever play in a Super Bowl

In no particular order 11 non Pats teams that come to mind
1994 Chargers
2024 Chiefs
2003 Panthers
1987 Broncos
2011 Giants
2008 Cardinals
1979 Rams
1995 Steelers
2000 Giants
1993 Bills
2006 Bears

Pats teams:
1985 (XX- nuff said about that)
2001 (even BB said he couldn’t believe they won it all)
1996? They were a really good team but let’s face it the Broncos losing at home in the divisional round to Jax might have been as big a break a team gets as there will ever be in the NFL playoffs

2011 Giants - how tf did a 9-7 team with a negative point differential who couldn’t run the ball with one of the worst defenses in the league even get to play this game never mind beating us to win it all….

Coughlin, man. Coughlin. Great football leader. He is a chess piece that brought success to quite a few teams. I'm not exactly sure how he is from an X/O's perspective, but he always seemed to have lengths of success, be it the Jags, the Giants, and even marked improvement with Boston College over 3 years. He seems to be a great motivator. A hardass like BB but often listened to his players and would take cues to calm down from them IIRC.

I think a lot of that success - of both Giants teams that had no business - was Coughlin. He is also credited for the 2017 Jags team. Sadly his hard ass demeanor got the best of him, as he fined the hell out of his players, and the org spiraled to two bad seasons before he was fired.

You're putting 2 teams that were making their 3rd straight appearance (one of which made it again the next year).

I'd take them both off the list and replace them with 05 Seahawks and 98 Falcons.

Honorable mention to the Harbawl Flacco and Harbowl Kaepernick game participants.

Teams that haven't been mentioned:

1998 Falcons
2007 Giants
2012 Ravens
2015 Broncos
2018 Pats
2022 and 2023 Chiefs

Eli also played out of his mind in that playoff run. Statistically that's one of the greatest QB runs in the playoffs ever. He got the record for completions and yards in a playoff run that season and threw 9TD's to 1INT.

To talk about how insane that was, Brady's never had a better TD:INT in any playoff run, he's only had a better playoff passer rating twice (2004 and 2017) in his whole career, he's never completed as many passes in a playoff run.

When people talk about Eli being streaky, they mean that season when he legitimately played like he was an all time great at the most important time.

They had no business beating GB and then SF. Had Kyle Williams not fumbled the ball on a punt return, SF most likely wins.

Nah, Pats were loaded and were the 2nd best team in the AFC. Sure, had the Broncos beat Jacksonville, they probably beat NE at home.

They weren't a fluke and would've been right back in the AFCCG had it not been for injuries in 1997.

The #1 seeded, 15-2 AFC Champs who went 6-1 vs playoff bound teams during the regular season are one of the Top 3 Worst Teams Ever to Play in the SB ?

Did you and mgteich go halfsies on a tray of edibles?

They got dog walked by the Eagles who are good but not a powerhouse. Tells us all we need to know. Statistically meh. A 11 win caliber team pretending to be a 15-2 team. They had the record they had and got to the game because the AFC is terrible and timely calls from the refs put them over the top. It was only a matter of time before their luck ran out. Sure I’d take most other SB teams to beat them.

Yup gotta agree with that. Just hard to overlook that they were extremely lucky to not have to go to Denver. That was around the time Elway had the Pats number.

Im on the fence about the 2018 Pats. They had a couple of really bad losses but they could still score a lot of points.. slumped then pivoted to a power run game that was hard to stop. Coached really well. I think they beat a lot of Super Bowl teams with the way the defense played in the Sb

Only one I’m not totally sure about is the 1994 Chargers. Lots of playmakers on defense and Nateone Means was a monster that year

The queefs went 15-2 lol as much of a hater I am I still wouldn't be shocked if they represent the AFC again next year

The AFC should be ashamed of themselves ****ing frauds

And one of the 2 was a game where they pulled their starters because the 1 seed was locked up. They also beat the team many considered the best in the AFC to get in the SB. It's kind of silly to call them one of the worst Super Bowl teams. It's like calling the 2013 Broncos one of the worst Super Bowl teams because they got blown out in the SB. Or calling the 2018 Rams the worst SB team because they only put up 3 points.

Sometimes you run into a bad match up. The 2007 Patriots only put up 7 points on the board with 6 minutes left in the 4th. If the Giants offense wasn't equally as ****ty that night we might be talking about that game as being a game where a good team came out extremely flat and got rolled.

Also yes, the AFC is completely snakebitten.

I know they aren't the worst... but the falcons team that blew the superbowl... lol..

Oh man. That was worse than Norwood missing a field goal...times 10.

I don't think all records are created equally and they're a perfect example of that. It wasn't "finding a way to win". Their offense was 15th for a reason. And the AFC is just that bad right now. If they're not top 3 worst then at least worth being on this list.

The AFC wasn't good in 2011 either when the Patriots got there - Tebow in the divisional round lol - the Pats beat only 1 winning team all season and their defense was hideous but I didn't call them out on the list because their offense was still awesome with Brady throwing for over 5200 yards.

Yup... the conference just sucks.

And the Pats took a lot of grief over the years for being products of an easy division... I don't think what the Bills have to compete with these days in the division is any better than the worst of the AFC East when the Pats were running it. The Chiefs* and their division isn't much better.

I agree that all records aren't equal, but the Chiefs were not one of the worst teams to go into a SB and proved it on their way to the SB. Yes they ran into an opponent that ate their lunch. So did the 2013 Broncos. They were still a good team The Rams only put up 3 points yet they were one of the top offenses all year.

Sometimes you go up against a unit that just has their day and wasn't going to let anything deny them.
