Insight into BB’s decision to coach college

He’s only 14 wins a way from taking the title of NFL Coach with most wins from the arrogant and despicable Shula family…..not getting that will burn in the pit of his stomach when he’s sitting in that rocking chair at Shady Acres Nursing Home!…..I know he says it doesn’t matter but how can it not?! Every time I think of that arrogant, sneering, nasty POS Don Shula ….i think….Come on Bill!!! BB was the much much better coach and accomplished so much more than Shula during a much harder time to win championships and games….
Last thing, I could have somewhat understood BB making a move if it was to a big time SEC or other football school that was going to have a chance to compete soon for National Championship (Gators would have been a good destination for example)….but UNC? I don’t get it…..maybe Bills getting nostalgic in his old age and is going there because his dad was an assistant there?
The funny thing about Shula was the way he butted in about Crygate, calling for asterisks and penalties for the Pats. That's was about as low as any coach could be and something that I'm sure Belichick would never do. But then it dawned on some of the players from the Fins undefeated team that they received the highest penalty and the loss of a 1st round pick for tampering to get Shula a year or two before that, so they put a muzzle on their former cheating HC.

I started thinking of any examples of coaches calling out other coaches and the only one I remember was Wrecks Ryan's classless criticism of Marty Schottenheimer, though I'm not sure if Ryan was coaching then.

I haven't looked at the numbers but it looks like Reid and Mahomes could put together a big run if they stay together.

For me this is the most punchable face in NFL history. I share your angst that this prick’s record won’t be overtaken by BB but frankly that’s on BB. I suspect he knows that and accepts things as they are.

If it was Bill instead of Meyer and knowing how Shula would react- I bet he sends the snowplow out there lol.

Patricia's stats are better than BOB or AVP's stats. What is wrong with staying with the guy that performed better? You are more concerned with popularity than winning?
Everyone complained about Matt being OC and wanted an experienced guy to come in. I know we have 20-20 hindsight now but that was the tenor of the board back then.

I think it's as simple as BB realizing 3 things:
1. No good NFL situation for him. (ie: no where he'd want to go that wants him) And his pride would not handle being passed on for another coaching carousel. He'd become irrelevant if he had to sit around another season.
2. His shot of cashing in for one last hoorah became surprisingly small. But, the one motivating factor for a very egotistical man is that he could join only 3 other HC in history to win a NCAA championship and super bowl.
3. To remain relevant, but getting a more chill college job, with much less immediate pressure than the NFL might be just what he wants for his sunset years. Also, there's lots of 20 year old women to mess with.

And obviously the Board was wrong. Not the first time .........

Imagine if he builds UNC into a top 5 program or wins a national championship. That would be his final **** you to the NFL.
It'll be weird because I could never work up much interest in college ball, but it looks as if I'll convince myself I'm a Tar Heels fan for a while

I think it's as simple as BB realizing he loves to coach football and this was the most appealing option anywhere on the horizon to do that

You cannot compare Belichick to Walsh. When Walsh went to college, college football was very different than the pros. Today, college football, including how you can build a team, is far closer to the NFL and how it is run. It will be far easier for Belichick to transition to college football than it was for Walsh. It won't mean he will be more successful, but the odds are more in his favor.

I know the article does point much of this out, but I wanted to reiterate it.

I think Belichick's success or failure will depend on how adaptable he is. In his last few years in New England, he lost a lot of his adaptability and wanted to run thing his way with his people even if it wasn't necessarily best for the team. He will need get back that adaptability to adjust to the college game and deal with college players who have a different mindset than pro players.

The last year could be the humbling experience he needed to get back to the Belichick of old that could adapt to any situation and did everything to make sure his players succeeded even if it was outside his comfort zone.

How could it not end well? Like wtaf? At this point he doesn't have anything left to prove. This is a great semi-retirement gig. Much lower cost of living down there compared to the Commonwealth. He doesn't have to work 100+ hours a week. This move should be celebrated.
Media is ****ing brutal. Why bring up the BOB BS. That ****ing guys play calling lost the Super Bowl. I would have given him the silent treatment too.

With hindsight yes. I still wish they never even tried him in the first place but seeing it didn't get better with BoB maybe a second year would have been better for Matty P. For similar reasons I don't want to scapegoat anyone this year either. One year really isn't enough time.
Matt Patricia is the biggest fraudulent coach in NFL History. I loathe his coaching style. Read what he did to the Detroit Organization. One of the worst head coaching tenures in NFL history. I want him as far away from New England as humanly possible.

There is also no doubt in my mind he was a big reason we lost the super-bowl in 2017 to the eagles. Reflecting back, it sickens me watching the hapless nick foles and alshon jeffrey torture our cornerbacks while malcolm butler is standing crying on the sidelines...

Without Patricia riding BBs coat tails, he is non existent in the NFL.

It's about holding everyone accountable for what went down and not giving Mac and others a scapegoat. Same for now I have hard time firing one of the coaches or management and letting the others off the hook.

I suppose the better move a few years ago would have been to fire Matty P like they did and to get rid of Mac too.

I was never a Matty P guy when he was DC but I think he was a better offensive coordinator than Mac was a QB.

There's also a lot of context that gets ignored over this.

1. Matt's tenure was a disorganized ****show. Anyone pretending otherwise has selective amnesia.
2. We got rid of the best WR on the team who was a significant contributor and Mac's best weapon. That made a huge difference on an offense that was already starved for weapons.
3. Damian Harris leaving meant Stevenson had to carry more of the load in the running game and he really wasn't up for it.
4. Most importantly, BOB was not allowed to have his own staff brought on with him. That's never a good move.
5. Other aspects of the team got worse in 2023 and it effected everything else. Our special teams were one of the worst in the league, that was something that had an impact on both sides of the ball and always had us playing in bad field position. The defense also a slid a bit more in 2023 compared to 2022 (basically just outside the top 10 in 22 to nearly middle of the league in 2023). All those had impacts on ppg and yardage numbers.
6. Mac's confidence was totally shot early on in 2023 while there was still hope for him in 2022. By 2023 it was clear he wasn't the guy and we started switching out QB;s a lot more and Zappe proved to suck as bad or worse.

Matt Patricia was a horrible mistake. There isn't a single person who thought that was the right move going in and it proved to be awful when it was in action. The fact that BOB came on and had his his hand tied behind his back with his staff, was lacking two huge skill players from last year, and the rest of the team also slid which meant all units were in a hole so the overall had worse numbers doesn't absolve how stupid the Matt Patricia error was. It just showed that overall the team was horribly mismanaged in 2023.

That's funny because Mac was used as the scapegoat for damn near everything last year and I kept hearing over and over again how if we just switched to Zappe things would be better, they weren't. Then I heard how if we just draft the right guy the team will be fixed, it wasn't.

Mac was completely done at the end, but the teams problems were so much deeper than Mac that anybody being even a fraction honest with themselves realized that he was getting most of the blame for a horribly dysfunctional team. People just wanted him to be the big problem so that they could believe things weren't as bad as they looked.

Mac was largely used as a deflection from criticism of the rest of the team. If anyone pointed out that the WR's individually were just flat out showing they weren't getting separation and were amongst the worst in the league or that the line was objectively awful even if you just isolated them, it always became "well you can't judge them because the QB is bad". Now we have Maye and it's just so patently obvious that the line and receivers are holding him back.

The biggest problem with the Pats the last few years was the roster in full. It still is

AVP's numbers with Maye for half the season are worse than Matty P's. What does that say about AVP?

The roster sucks, no doubt. But Mac sucks too. Look at Mac in Jacksonville and look at Maye in NE. It is night and day. Mac sucks. Zach Wilson sucks. Trey Lance sucks. Maye is wonderful.

Two things can be true at the same time. The roster sucked and Mac sucked. Today the roster sucks but Maye is great. The 2024 FA and draft did not improve the situation except for drafting Maye. Even Maye has not improved the offense, AVP's stats are worse than Matty P's. Two things can be true at the same time. The 2024 roster sucks, and AVP sucks.

In a weird way some of the problems the last year or 2 allowed us to flush out a bad QB quickly and allowed us to move on to the next QB. Unfortunately it cost us coaching and we are now seeing what that was worth. You can't have 1 without the other.
