Great read. Compares Bb and Walsh who also made this move to Stanford from the 49ers in similar circumstances. It didn’t end well for Walsh hopefully better for BB

It didn't, but there were a lot more roadblocks in Walsh's time than there is now. Kids had to sit out a year if they transferred, hyper-vigilant NCAA enforcement of rules, and Stanford in particular had a GPA requirement to get in the school that wasn't 2.0.

There's apples and oranges there - it's a good read though.

Interesting nugget here:
Belichick is a less emotive coach than Walsh, less prone to outbursts. But he also spent the majority of his career inoculated in a bubble of his own creation. At the end in New England, he took out his frustration with the Kraft family on loyal coaches. Jerod Mayo and Bill O’Brien were drafted in by the Krafts to wrestle some control away from their all-powerful football monarch. O’Brien was a Belichick guy. But for two weeks during his final season in New England, Belichick did not speak to his offensive coordinator. After being pushed on Belichick in the offseason, O’Brien was now viewed as a Kraft guy.
So BOB got the Mac Jones silent treatment by Bill at the end of last season. Cool. I think BB knew it was the end of the line anyway and obviously he was done with Kraft so whatever

And Mac had spent the last 2 years running up the back stairs to go cry to Thunder that Belichick was a meanie, and it got out in the press. No wonder he didn't talk to him.

Wonder how many times Mac ran into Mayo on these back stairs?

Very interesting stuff.

I found this compelling as it sounds like many around here and with time this stuff vanishes.

"Maybe that whole San Francisco thing was about Montana and Rice and Young and Clark after all."

Jerod Mayo catching strays

Should be interesting to follow. Belichick is still smart enough to adapt his coaching style from demanding to teaching. Any kid who plays for him is going to learn more than they could from any other coach.

Very good read, thanks for sharing. Also very interesting following the links, especially the ones leading to more in depth analysis instead of the self congratulatory tweets. Some very good perspective in analyses like these:

This makes Kraft look even more like a turd. He forced Bill O'Brien of all coaches onto the staff. Then when it doesn't work out, he had to throw someone under the bus....Bill Belichick.

Would you have rather they stay with Patricia?

With hindsight yes. I still wish they never even tried him in the first place but seeing it didn't get better with BoB maybe a second year would have been better for Matty P. For similar reasons I don't want to scapegoat anyone this year either. One year really isn't enough time.

Patricia's stats are better than BOB or AVP's stats. What is wrong with staying with the guy that performed better? You are more concerned with popularity than winning?

Who cares? Thanks for the memories, Bill. We'll see you when they have "celebration of your career" thing as Gillette.

I bet his GF gets busted for sleeping with one of his players at UNC.

I hope it does too! The GOAT as wickersham was mentioning on WEEI didn't want to have to split control with teams existing front office people. I wanted to see him back in the NFL. Bill had full control for so long he's not going to want it any other way. Now he has Lombardi as his GM at UNC a guys who's been fired from every NFL job he's ever held. Good luck coach!

In hindsight I really wish it all went according to plan..of Bill leaving the roster here competitive for when he chose to step away on his own. It doesn't feel right that the GOAT has to go to NCAA to continue his coaching career. Bills NFL history a living legend.

Imagine if he builds UNC into a top 5 program or wins a national championship. That would be his final **** you to the NFL.
He’s only 14 wins a way from taking the title of NFL Coach with most wins from the arrogant and despicable Shula family…..not getting that will burn in the pit of his stomach when he’s sitting in that rocking chair at Shady Acres Nursing Home!…..I know he says it doesn’t matter but how can it not?! Every time I think of that arrogant, sneering, nasty POS Don Shula ….i think….Come on Bill!!! BB was the much much better coach and accomplished so much more than Shula during a much harder time to win championships and games….
Last thing, I could have somewhat understood BB making a move if it was to a big time SEC or other football school that was going to have a chance to compete soon for National Championship (Gators would have been a good destination for example)….but UNC? I don’t get it…..maybe Bills getting nostalgic in his old age and is going there because his dad was an assistant there?
