Optum, Israel, and Mayo's Way: A Swindler's Journey.

(A) will not bring them any more cash, but do they realize it? Kraft would rather talk himself into giving Mayo another year, at least, instead of admitting he was wrong. Kraft: "There were bound to be growing pains with a rookie coach and moving on from BB, but Jerod is solid and next year will be much better. We've got our QB, we'll upgrade the roster through the draft and FA, and we'll be back, baby!" Wow, that sounds exactly like some posters here!

Thanks for the feedback. I did not redact or keep away other connected sides of the argument. I found no examples that contradicted the themes I showed-- only more examples that corroborated the same themes. Also, I searched for quotes only from puff pieces, not hit jobs.

Things I kept out were:

* Mayo's politics, except for a snippet. The snippet was significant because it's the only instance I found of him or anyone else saying he had a contributing moment at Optum. Also, completely redacting politics would be dishonest because Mayo openly talks about it being a core priority in his personal and work life. In one interview he talked himself in circles about not wanting to be hired because of politics but also that his main focus at work was politics. It was the most Mayo thing ever. I kept all that out because politics would quickly become the only point people see, and that's not my focus.

* Impostor syndrome, which he also openly talks about struggling with, and says he compensates for it by constantly trying to put himself through uncomfortable situations. He talks about taking on big tasks that he may not be ready for so he can learn. It's a good trait, admirable even, until the big tasks are actually huge jobs where incompetence has a harmful ripple effect well beyond himself. At that point it's not a good trait but something more selfish born of too much ambition. Or so I'd assess it. I kept this all out because exploring complex psychology issues would entail too much guesswork with various interpretations.

The main point of this exercise was to see him without the lens of this year's Patriots. Optum, the Kraft dinners, and Israel give us a great view of Mayo's mode of operation without any excuses about the "situation he inherited." That's why I chose that timeframe and what I think separates it from most Mayo talk on this forum.

Mayo is not a competent head coach, period. My prevailing concern is an injection of player talent during this coming offseason will enable him to continue faking it. Then, a mediocre season (that might've been a GOOD season with solid coaching) will be seen as "progress."

Hard Knocks might help save Mayo’s job. You know Mr Kraft would love for his team to be on the show. Especially with his push for the HOF. I believe they are a shoe in to be chosen as long as they don’t fire the head coach. A first year coach is supposed to be a disqualifier.

Personally I would like to see the verbiage stating he would be the successor to be BB. I wonder if there were stipulations if BB decided to coach till 80, if he was still winning, SBs and the like. I’m not saying he would’ve played to that age, it’s just an idea of an example of things that could have happened. Does the verbiage state WHY he is successor or just I HJK, do promise that the Mayo will be slathered all over the HC position when BB dries up. I also would have like to be the fly on the wall during the conversation that secured him becoming the next guy. Maybe Mayo had his own “Orchids” chain? Maybe he was a swell fella and gave good foot rubs…the world will never know.

Incompetent really shouldn’t be applied to a brand new HC in his first year. If he’s learning to be better and I think we all have seen signs he is, he’s not incompetent. Hopefully he can keep learning and not flame out fast. Not due to me liking or disliking him, but just want to get out of cellar dweller status and that takes time.

Mayo (and probably others) need to go right after this season. To quote JFK: "An error doesn't become a mistake unless it remains uncorrected". Hiring Mayo (and possibly others) was an error. Not correcting it after the season, then makes it a mistake.
