Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

He had his shot at a rebuild in 2023, and they went 4-13. That's when most people got off the bus. Like, the vast majority were willing to say 'it's time'.

What they disagree with was the smear campaign afterwards, and completely whiffing on the draft and free agency except for Maye, and hiring a coaching staff that's completely in over their head.

'Hurr durr it's all Bill's fault' at this point is ridiculous, for that reason.
Can we at least give them a half season before saying anyone is a draft whiff? Even Maye is no sure thing yet. This is a rebuild they take time a lot more often than not. I don’t consider what BB did since Brady left a “rebuild”.

I mean, Wallace and Robinson can't play. Baker can't find the field, despite having a wide open lane to do so, and Polk can't catch a cold. That was your whole draft outside of Maye.

There aren't even like, highlights or sparks or any hint that these guys can play. Maye can at least play. Whether he's a superstar or not remains to be seen, but at least he can competently play the position.

I'm not being pessimistic as a meme, these guys (at least the guards, I can say, definitively) can't play, show no signs of being able to play. I'm not sure Robinson has won a single rep without help.

2 things can be true:

1) Bill left the roster in horrible shape
2) Wolf didn’t do well in the offseason starting to rebuild it

Of course they can.
Although if #1 is true, why did they re-sign all those players in the offseason, when they were busy doing nothing else?

Do you want the doomer answer?

They re-signed guys on short-term deals that wouldn't have necessarily gotten more anywhere but New England, so they paid market value contracts to fill roster spots, a) and b) did this to send signals to the fanbase that they were 'doing something' and 'signing their own', and 'spending money'.

It's funny how the 'The roster is Belichick's fault' contingent, are the same people that were just fine with these re-signings.

The regressions of Dugger and specifically Onwenu has been drastic. I think Godchaux's finally starting to be a true DT, but he's all alone out there. I thought Bentley was playing as well as he ever has until he got hurt. Jelani Tavai was so bad last week he got pulled.
Makes me kinda want to go look at those deals again and see how painful they are to move on from after a year if a new coach comes in and wants to change things up.

I mean, take a look, I know they're all short-term deals, none longer than 3 years. The biggest hit, iirc was Onwenu's.

Even if they cut all of them, I think they're well under the cap for next year.

Looks like the guys that are harder to move on from financially in 2025 are Barmore, Onwenu, Dugger, Stevenson, and probably Godchaux. Most of the other guys are not too painful to move, either via a straight cut, a post-June 1st cut or a trade.

I think those 5 players are most likely guys who would be kept by almost any coach though. Onwenu is a really good guard and has flexibility. Barmore is a potentially elite DT and Godchaux looks good this year. Stevenson is generally good and would give you reason to want to try him in a new scheme. The only one I could see on the outside is perhaps Dugger due to scheme fit, but if that’s the case I doubt they’d have any trouble trading him since much of his deal is tied up in guarantees that NE would pay.

She's a team lawyer who handles contracts and things like that. It's been reported before. She makes no personnel decisions. All teams have a lawyer or lawyers who do this. This is not something unique to the Pats.
I don't know she is apparently a senior advisor to Mayo and sat in on coaching interviews.

You can't draft a stud. You can develop them so they turn out that way.

The only thing the top of the draft gives you is a better chance to get players you want but it's still on you to develop them to their ceiling.
Some players like Mac are going to be duds, there is no redeeming some prospects.

Some players have the tools to work with, Mac is a Kirk Cousins type athlete. He just doesn’t possess the smarts, leadership or competitiveness to be good.

Some players like Okorafor or Ronnie Perkins are simply bad athletes and don’t have the tools. Wolf had a penchant for acquiring too many of these or guys who were barely good this offseason. That’s a good way to suck… as we see now.

Bill must really hate Mayo. 3 separate times this week he has criticized him. True Mayo has shown nothing but Bill is a spiteful angry old man.
He knows this will really undercut Mayo and he just does not care.

Collaboration left the roster in a bad place, how bad it was has been completely overblown. When you could have fixed it with three new starters and a little depth this offseason, it wasn’t all that bad.

Wolf alone didn’t do well at all, they could have been really good if this offseason went well.

Maye behind even a “good” line is a good team… assuming better coaching as well.

Why should he care ? Did Mayo care at all in hurting his mentor and the only coach in pro football and boss he has ever had this entire year ? Did Mayo care that he undermined Bill while Bill still coached the PATS ? He did not, so at this point Bill owes him nothing. Bill knows more about football in his little pinky than Mayo and all the coaching staff put together. He speaks the truth and I am so happy he said something. I was tired of him taking the high road when that little mean owner and his lacky were constantly taking pot shots at him !

Bill has kept his mouth shut since he left, since that time how many backhanded shots did the Pat’s brass take at him?

For fck’s sake they made an entire documentary suggesting he had no involvement in the dynasty, Kraft has slammed him repeatedly in interviews and on podcasts. Mayo has blamed him for the level of talent on the team despite the fact the only good players the team currently has were Bill’s players and all the ones Wolf brought in alone have sucked.

So to hell with that, you wanted honesty… now you got it. I don’t even think Bill has been petty, the ones joking about how bad the Pat’s suck has been his cohosts like Pat McAfee, Scatchy or Lombardi.

These guys are all analysts now, all 32 teams are fair game. To hell with feelings… all these guys are right. This organization looks like it’s run by clowns doing clownish things. Call it what it is…

Jones didn’t suck at Bama nor in his rookie season. If the Pats had a good head coach the last couple of seasons - and BB was absolutely not - then who knows?

How do you know this?

Okaorafor is gone. Yes bad signing. For everyone else it’s not even half way into a 17 game season so we’ll see. We suck because the depth players arent NFL caliber most notably on defense and a rookie HC has not yet figured out how to use his players well. Bad players = lousy record. Not rocket science.
