I felt like this deserved its own thread. However you might feel about Bill commenting on this, I think it will have repercussions in the locker room.

Bill is correct. This is the same defense as last year with some players out due to injury but some back after being out last year. Basically the same group that was one of the better defenses in the league last year. Not really sure why they are bad this year with the only difference is the coaching staff. Maybe Covington is not ready. Maybe weird Steve Belichick was that good of a coach. Don't have the answers

Bill: "You know, defensively, the Patriots led the league last year in rushing defense. Yards per carry. Number 1 in the league. And this year they're way down in the 20s somewhere, and... it's the same guys.... They re-signed Jennings, they re-signed Tavai, obviously Dugger, right. Marcus Jones and Gonzalez have been healthy all year when they were both on IR by this time last year. So you've got Wise, you've got Godchaux, you've got y'know, Keion White, you've got Mapu, Gonzalez, 3 rookies from last year. It's a lot of the same players, and in some cases, I would say more, so I don't... you know... I'm kind of hurt for those guys because, to call them soft - they're not soft - they were the best team in the league last year against the run. And those guys last year went out there and did it even though we couldn't score many points offensively. So, I don't know, I feel bad for the defensive players on that one because those guys, that's a tough group... Jon Jones, Godchaux, Wise, Jennings, Uche, those are all tough players. They'll strap it up and go. Dugger. They're tough guys."

Essentially Bill's point is that they have almost all the same players and overall have a better unit due to several guys being healthy this year that weren't last year, and the offense is better this year than last year too scoring-wise, but yet the unit is performing drastically worse with the same pieces. Granted, having no Barmore and Bentley is tough from a run-stopping standpoint, but that doesn't explain such a drastic falloff.

What he is saying, without saying it outright, is that the coaching is terrible.

I know it is more of Bill twisting the knife but Mayo kind of walked right into it with this one. I don’t think they're soft. I just think they're not very good.

Kraft set Mayo up by opening his mouth last week. Bill swatted that thing right back over the net and Mayo took it off the chin.

I wish Bill would have still stayed relatively quiet like he has most of the season with the Pats but something was bound to be said.

I don't like it but it is kind of entertaining in a Felger kind of way.

They're not soft, they're poorly assembled and poorly coached.

Maye was a slam dunk at #3. I'm more concerned about the abysmal failure of all the free agents brought in from the outside and rookies the weren't taken in the top three. The front office fumbled the ball before the season began.

I'm also concerned about the less than high school level of coaching. Has anyone seen Mayo do anything but stand there, have we seen him go over and talk to the defense or offense and coach them up in-game? No... he stands there like a statue and mutters after every mistake.

This is a must listen for the current state of the team, Mike gets into the Pats right at the start of the pod:

Mayo set himself up for this.

He set himself up for the 'burn cash' statement.

He set himself up for 'Maye is outplaying Jacoby' statement.

The guy can't help himself.

Mayo was a bundle of cliches when he initially came forward with Thundershat in tow. Seems like D fundamentals aren't his or Covington's strong suit.

Kind of hard to argue with the head coach on that one. Even if you don't agree with it when the head coach says it then it's a problem.

"The same players" actually no there are some injuries to important players to the run defense.

With all due respect Bill should just zip it. That is unless he wants to talk up how stacked he left the team in talent and his amazing coaching last year that got us the #3 overall pick that turned into Drake Maye. It's not his team anymore and he knows sweet squat about what's happening around the team these days.

And his opinion of the defense last year is very generous. If it was good then they would be a lot better than they were at getting a clutch stop once in a while not to mention handle good offenses. Which they haven't done since Super Bowl 53.

Undeniable facts the D was much better last year.

There were injuries to key players last year and there are some this year. Bill never let that be an excuse.

You want to defend this disaster this year just because you hate Bill by all means bury your head in the sand and keep kicking Bill and ignoring the burning building around you.

Oh yeah teams that get outscored 72-3 in consecutive games and suck against good offenses have a great defense or something. Forgot.

Totally Mac Jones fault. Worst person ever. I think he should be in prison.

Jonathan's fault... he hired Wolf and put him in charge of the collaboration, which hired Mac... even though they had to talk BB into it.

Mac's a bad football player, whether he's a dirty player like opponents accused him of is irreverent to me. He never should have been coddled and enabled by the owner.

But you think Mac is good, which is why nobody here should listen to a single thing you have to say about actual football.

For as image conscious as Kraft is I don't know what he thinks he will gain by taking swipes at Bill publicly. All it will do is make Mayo's life harder and Mayo already says enough dumb stuff of his own.

That's right Mac is the worst person ever just like I said. Everything about him sucks. Even his name sucks.

Too bad Bill didn't know all of that that ahead of time and picked someone else instead.
