Great stuff. In short. A couple of things.Interesting... I had not thought too much on the potential length of Mayo's tenure... I figure a minimum of at least three years...
So, imo, Mayo has a long leash right now... His fortunes are all tied to the front office - I think Coach is in a unique position, one that is difficult for me to define beyond "Coach". First and foremost - he is the hand picked successor to Belichick. That will grant him leeway because quite frankly I don't think RKK's ego will allow him to admit he made the wrong choice, if indeed he did... There was a Kraft quote, i cant remember it exactly - but it was along the lines of - having three coaches in his tenure as owner, all super bowl caliber guys. Thats a bit of ego, and not much hubris, in that statement.
Second, to a degree we have not seen since 1995, he is subject to internal pressures that Belichick never had to face. I think you have three distinct personalities in that front office that are wielding influence over the future of the franchise - RKK, Wolf & to a lesser degree but is a growing influence, Jonathan "Little Enos" Kraft - Mayo's along for the ride, without much say, if any, in the personell department. As long as we hear the refrain "its a colaboration", it says to me Mayo has no say in picking players beyond telling the triad "we need a tackle or we need a safety", etc... This protects him to a degree.
I hope Mayo is "the guy"... I hope he grows into the role of HC... Im doubtful because of his complete lack of experience... 5 years coaching experience in total... thats a short resume... But, It is a good story, no? First round Pats draft pick to winning Head Coach? I can sell that to the Hallmark channel 24/7/365... If not Hallmark, then its worthy at the very least of a 30 for 30, lol...
Mayo doesn't strike me as a guy who an ass kisser and will take **** for long terms.
He will grow more into his role as time goes on.
This season is to keep our heads above water until we get to 2025.
I agree Mayo's got at least 3 seasons. As does wolf and AVP.
Mayo admitted he defers the offensive side to AVP & wolf. Ryan's did the same thing in Houston with CJ.
