Wolf on the OL: I *Think* We Have the Pieces to Compete... Oy Vey...

We may be seeing that line up to start the season. Unless on cut down day we can get a cap casualty... I doubt it. So the team knows the tackles are and issue.
Or they have been verifying that he totally sucks. Exclusive: nobody has ever seen Valerian Lowe and Marshal Newhouse in the same room. Think about that for a minute.

“…may have sedative and anxiolytic effects…”

This is a glaring statement from our GM that the line is a bit of a shambles... "I think" we have the pieces to compete just fills me with dread and is an implicit admission that the OL is not in a good place...

The line from the second game was constituted was lt lowe lg sow c andrews rg onwenu rt okorafor... I was not overly impressed with their play in the first quarter of the game... and that was against Phillys 2's... there was a lot of consistent pressure inside the box, and that does not bode well for a team that wants to run first... Dre is a good back... but much like the previous years, if the opposing defenses and crowd the line, stack the box - however you want to term it - the offense is going to suffer...

There was another statement from Wolf about be aggressive when the cutdowns are announced... this further bothers me, knowing that we might/will probably be looking at adding a vet or two, guys who didn't go thru camp here, and may not have an understanding of the new line schemes... and i fear that those late additions will be pressed into a starting role, especially of we are able to bring in a tackle or two...

I hate being so negative, but I am concerned that this line is going to be bad...

Game 3 is really going to be the indicator of who the starters are going to be... its getting late in the day in regards to sorting out the starters on the line...

I agree. I just hope that they keep Maye on the sideline until the OL is fixed through next year's FA/Draft. I know that's not a popular sentiment, but it's what I think is in the best interest's of the team.

Kyles has also said Baker and Polk have been “unguardable” during camp. It’s not translating against opposing teams.

The sports reporters also told us about how great Baker and Polk's hands are. In the 2nd preseason game Baker could only catch the easy passes right in front of him, and dropped everything else. Now we hear that Baker created separation downfield against the Eagles, but they forget to mention it is the Eagles 2nd or 3rd team.

the truth? that its a work in progress?
The statement “it’s a work in progress” is the truth in the same way the statement “it is what it is” is the truth. Technically true, but completely meaningless. If you're saying that you'd like him to use more "GM-speak", I can understand that. At times, I think this new regime is too honest, which can leave them open to misinterpretation and increased scrutiny.

It’s almost as if building, managing, and maintaining an NFL roster is … hard? Who would’ve thought.

If only we could find a GM who demonstrated the ability to do it at a consistently high level. Oh well …

It depends on how much meddling the Krafts do. If they do a lot, then no top flight GM will want to come here. Based on the pathetic off season, it seems to me that the Patriots are not being run by professionals, suggesting that the Krafts are indeed meddling.....

Could just be lip service. This is better than coming out and saying that we are desperate for ol help or something like that. Besides theres not much else we can do about it until next offseason so might as well give the players you do have a vote of confidence. Imo this says nothing about how he truly evaluates the line, at least i hope not!
If he’s engaged in trade talks for players, saying in the media that he’s desperate for those players makes them much more expensive.

I understand supporting your team but WTF?

the BOTTOM LINE
is that we are OK (certainly for a bottom ten team who is rebuilding) at SIX OL positions: starters and backups at all but LT. I LIKE Sow, Andrews, Onwenu, Robinson, Leverett and Wallace. I suppose that I am OK with Okorafor as a backup RT, making SEVEN

Lowe and whoever backs him up.

I’m pretty optimistic in general, but we don’t know if Robinson, Leverett, and Wallace are any good or not. I hope they are, but have nothing to go on. I do know that Lowe sucks.

Right, there is nothing to be gained

Right, we'll know by the end of the season and know where we have to make investments on the line.

Based on the Eagle game? Interesting view, maybe you had unrealistic expectations?
Taylor Kyles, Evan Lazar, myself and others all looked at all-22 and very encouraged by the line and Tackle play. PFF rated them pretty highly also. None saw what you saw, for sure.
I thought the line was bad in Carolina, I was really encouraged by the Eagles game, the coaching seems to be of the highest quality. There is a glimmer of hope based on Eagles game.
They are a decent

During the PC, he didn’t look or sound convinced when he made this statement.

There has to be a weak link on this team somewhere, due to the developmental stage they are at. They could have weakened other positions to strengthen the OL (although I haven't heard anyone make viable concrete suggestions on how they'd have done that, without fantasy about how good the draft available players were).

It's a process. We just got duck boats from the Celtics, there's plenty to be happy about in Boston sports.

I'm optimistic that Sow is going to be good at LG. I think Andrews is still good at C. If Onwenu is at RG, I'm confident he's great. Between Okorafor having his moments in PIT, Wallace being a rookie that shows some potential, and the possibility they could kick Onwenu out to RT if they need to, I'm cautiously optimistic they can find a workable player there. If Onwenu has to play RT, then they have Leverett/Robinson who show, IMO, potential to be decent if needed. They also have Strange maybe coming back mid year who’s another option inside with a reasonable floor, though that’s pending a return to his (mediocre at best) form after injury.

LT is a mess, but I’m fairly confident that they can get passable OL play from the other 4 spots. If Wallace or Okorafor play RT well enough to leave Onwenu inside then I think they can get overall good to great play across the other 4 spots even.

The dream, world scenario would be if Lowe or Wallace take well to LT and actually be decent to good there. But I’m skeptical.

GM speak. Was anyone expecting him to come out and say “man our OL sucks…Lowe can’t block a corpse”
This.

He can't throw everyone under the bus before they've even played a game. He's got a locker room to manage with 53 guys, plus PS players and possible waiver wire transactions to complete. We talked about this in another thread. It was either Joe Alt and a QB next year or Maye this year and OT next year. The QB class looks meh for 2025, so there was no sense kicking the can down the road a year. FA OT, especially LTs, are FAs for a reason. If they were worth anything, they would be signed by their respective teams. It's build in the draft, develop your own.

These are the type of statements we heard from bad franchises during the dynasty years. It’s quite shocking to see people on board with this new regime.
Hopefully this is just a diversionary tactic to buy some time while sorting things out on year 1 of a rebuild. If Wolf is making similar excuses when the reality of the situation is established during the regular season.
