Reports are that the rookie Layden Robinson has been a standout during practice, and looked good at LG during Thursday night's game.

Last year, Sow/Onwenu stabilized the right side of the line.

The team doesn't have one NFL starting tackle beyond Onwenu. It's a few swing tackles, and practice squad players to be used only when everyone is hurt and the team is desperate.

I don't care if Onwenu is a better guard. He was serviceable/good last year at RT, and the best tackle we have.

The Patriots can't trust their rookie QB with the offensive line, but still they don't play their best five offensive linemen.

WTF???

Outside zone plays that will be featured a lot more put much more emphasis on smaller athletic guys who laterally move out in space.

Onwenu is a great guard. But having him operate this way on outside zone, which stretches the D horizontally, would be a challenge for him. Not his forte. Guy’s 335-350 pounds.

Power gap and inside zone? Yep. Your point is valid.

This is why you build a scheme around the players, and not vice versa.

The team was upfront about signing Onwenu to be a tackle. I assume once the interior is settled - be it through Robinson's emergence or Strange's return - Onwenu returns to that spot.

It's to the point that your franchise QB isn't trusted to play.

The coaches are all over the place in regard to the OL. Okorafor played RT (horribly) without practicing in the days before the game.

What are we doing?

Robinson starting at RG is a possibility. Does anyone expect Strange to be ready to go much before late October?

Anyway, I think Sow at LG is an upgrade over the former first-rounder.

I am going to beat my drum: best OL coach we could have hired is the assistant with the Texans.

Cole Popovich.

I know OL is a bit of a mess.
I'd still suggest starting with Sow - Andrews - Onwenu in the middle is the best way to try to keep some stability and continuity on that unit. Reason 1 - We have some experience at Tackle to work with (Anderson, Okra, Lowe) and it seems Wallace is working into a possible answer at LT. I don't think putting a rookie at RG is better than having a serviceable vet at RT.
Reason 2 - Trading for a legit LT could still be possible, without re-shuffling the whole line again.

Can Onwenwu play LT?

That said as atrocious as Lowe was last year if he's winning the battle at LT I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he's actually gotten better.

And that's it's not just a default to Chucks and Wallace struggling on the left.

At RT I think Anderson will be good enough and at least he creates a minimum standard that Chucks or Wallace will have to beat out.

I went into the summer thinking that as long as the 4 other spots work out that they could cover for LT. I think that might have been foolish and clearly there's a reason LTs get paid more. Just the opposite appears to be a big problem.

Agree. Ownenu said himself that he's playing RT when he re-signed. So I don't understand what the experiment is at RG is confusing. He played his best ball at RT.. also what's hampering the depth is the 1sr round pick in stranger.. isn't available at LG.. at this point I hope Mayo just keeps the best 5 together going forward barring Injury. I know the line isn't great but If they be serviceable then we'll be ok.

I'd love that Idea. Then ownenu would have to renegotiate his contract. LOL

You must be related to that guy. If he was so good, you'd think an NFL team would make him more than the assistant, not to mention he was coaching in the dregs of college football.

Where did you read these reports? That would be a big help if he could play either guard spot. Sow has shown he can play RG.

Two rookies at LT and LG is going to be painful at times.

Reiss this morning - "And the depth of the second unit, which was led by a solid performance from rookie right guard Layden Robinson"

Bedard after the game "The lineman who stood out the most in this game was fourth-round pick Layden Robinson, who played both guard spots well. His technique was sharp and he played physically. Had a standout run and pass block, and only allowed one hurry in 46 snaps. ..."

Thanks, I was hoping for more than game reports, just because it's preseason against 3rd stringers. Camp performance more important at this stage, but certainly one to keep an eye on.

Robinson isn't amongst their top 5 O-Linemen. If he's such a standout, why is he barely getting 2nd line Snaps?

If Robinson is so great, why couldn't he handle a single rushing LBer with help from a RB?

You haven't seen enough of Scott Peters to say that Popovich is better. FFS.

Robinson had the most snaps on offense, and I believe the most snaps of any Patriot in the game.

Like I said he played 70% of the offensive snaps. I would expect a couple of whiffs. Bedard said there was only one. Maybe that's the one you saw,

I read Bedard and he's been upbeat on the kid even before last night.

BTW Bedard is not sure they should move Onwenu to tackle.
