I expect Maye to play a lot in the scrimmage with PHI, but less in the game.

I agree with waiting until we have some semblance of an OL before playing him a lot. I don't believe that it is a good idea having him play behind say Lowe and Anderson.

I'm OK with him starting in say Game 4. Give the coaches a bit of time to get our OL functioning. Half the line will be new. Let's give them a bit of time to gel.

I strongly agree that Maye should play a lot this year. I don't think it is a good idea to redshirt him instead of having him get lots and lots of rookie mistakes behind him.

He's not ready.

If Drake Maye had shown that he was ready in practice/camp, he would have played more.

As you said, this is going to be a loooooong rebuild, No need to rush it in game 1. Mayo is being deliberate with his development - which is a good thing.

It is not so much getting hurt as being unable to run plays. If your QB cannot run through his progressions, I'm not sure what he is learning.

Mayo is being deliberate with his development - which is a good thing.

Yes. Please remember that Maye regressed his last year at UNC. Lost weapons and leaky OL in the interior. If one studies the tape, he flashes frustration on several occasions.

The situation with the Patriots’ OL is actually worse for Maye than at UNC. Weak OTs but strong in the middle. That lets guys come free off the edge, worst nightmare for a QB. Especially on the blind side.

Ask the Jets about ruining a franchise rookie QB with poor OL play. I still applaud them for drafting Olu Fashanu as their backup LT instead of a QB to wait in the wings.

Given the young QB's rawness in so many aspects of the position, I'm resigned to the possibility Wolf & Co view Maye as a multi-year project the organization will set on a path similar to Jordan Love.
That's all well and good, great in fact, if it works out in the long term, however, the question will remain "Was it the best use of such a premium draft chip to take on a project." Love was the #26 pick, not the 3rd, and this #3 chip could have been utilized not only to bolster a very thin, unremarkable roster for this year but serve as a long-term draft pick annuity as well.

Time will tell.

Great point. Is it realistic to draft a guy #3 and give him the equivalent of a red shirt year? Fans aren’t going to be happy with that.

Just realize we’re in a no-win situation. We’ve got LT troubles. And Okorafor at RT is stinking up the joint with his mental errors.

But that’s the price of not trading down and accumulating extra talent. Staying put at #3 means our starting OTs would be backups on most other teams.

Lowe was embarrassingly bad... if you don't see the issues at offensive tackle it's a "you" problem. I can't think of a more measured and even keeled reporter than Reiss.

Who cares what the fans want? Their job is to build a contender, not to take fan polls about what they do and don’t like. If that were the case Belichick would have been fired after the 2000 season, and David Terrell would have been drafted over Richard Seymour. This OL couldn’t stop the cheerleaders from getting to the QB, so stabilize the OL and go from there.

I'm fine with Maye sitting most of this year. But, that's even more of a reason to play him more in the preseason!
You don't "save" a backup QB from preseason, you play him as much as you can to get his feet wet, make rookie mistakes, get the nerves out, and hopefully gain a bit of confidence in case he does have to go in.

The decision to play Zappe almost 3 Quarters was the stupidest. It gained nothing. Helped no one. Taught neither players or coaches anything about their brand new offense in desperate need of evaluation and preparation.

Most teams dont show their real defensive schemes and play guys trying to make the team before pending roster cut downs.
