Not exactly shocking, and I feel like this was also reported previously but it's now being talked about because Shanahan apparently publicly admitted reaching out to him:

“I did. I threw it out to him. He loves football so much that you never know,” Shanahan told Kawakami. “I can’t believe he’s not a head coach of a team right now. I know what I would do if I was an owner so that shocks me. The last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick.”

Shanahan continued: “But, I know he just loves ball in the simplest form. I threw it all out to him, like whatever he’d want to do. I was like, ‘Would you be interested?’ He was very nice and appreciative but politely turned me down.”

The game has changed unfortunately BB didn't change with it but it has come to pass his HC Career which is a HOF one.

It's impossible for BB to take a job other than HC at this point. Once you're in the conversation for greatest of all time, anything other than HC is an insult.

That would be an amazing team up though if the script was flipped.

When I first saw this my reaction was to be shocked by how insulting it was considering BB’s stature as a HC. After thinking about it for just a little bit my opinion changed quite a bit.

First, my impression of Shanahan and Lynch is that they deeply appreciate BB and thus offering him a position is anything but insulting; they want to be around him to learn as much as possible about how he handles situations. Second and in the same spirit, they would be giving him the huge benefit of their perspectives, especially about offense in 2024. Third, they have a damn good chance to go back to the Super Bowl anyway, BB would make them more formidable on defense, and honestly anything to prevent the Chiefs from a threepeat is AOK with me.

I understand why BB declined but I actually think he would have benefited greatly from doing it and it would have been kind of cool to see it.

Of course he did.

Little Billy's undeservedly massive ego wouldn't have allowed it.

I hope Bill stays retired but around the game like he is doing this season. he looks like he is having a blast.
I feel he hung around 2 years too long chasing a record, rather than being satisfied with the title greatest ever.
next June the BB fan appreciation day/statue unveiling. retire a Patriot.

It is pretty demeaning

That's an interesting angle that I had overlooked.

John Lynch finished his NFL career as a Patriot in the 2008 offseason. If I recall correctly Lynch had figured out that he wasn't going to make the Pats roster, but asked Belichick if he could play one more time - and Belichick obliged by letting him play most of the final '08 preseason game before releasing him.

It’d be OJR, on the job retirement. With a good but not great paycheck and a crazy work schedule, when you’re used to a great paycheck for a crazy work schedule. Non starter.

shame he didn't take the job... Could have helped the 9ers get over the hump that is the kc cheefs

Would have been a good opportunity for BB to learn a thing or two about offense.

The Pats are on the 49ers 2024 schedule.

Game 4. Just imagine the drama and BS if BB was on the SF coaching staff.

what are the chances-
Bill and Brian are discussing the Pats defense in season?
Bill and Steve are discussing the Huskies defense in season?
Bill and Mayo are discussing the Pats in general in season?
