Now that the surprise onside kick is toast with the new rules imagine teams are allowed a surprise "onside punt" lol.

CFL allows teams to do it. On 3rd and long dribble it a couple of feet and recover it... the 10 yard rule won't apply so...first down. Lolol

That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in sports.

So on X and long take it way behind the line of scrimmage then do this. Free 1st and 10 and the defense has no shot to stop it

Not crazy; just legal cheating ( or at least unsportsmanlike competition) in my book.

If you had a minimum 5 yard travel on the punt; I could maybe accept/live w it. But to kick intentionally only 6 inches where the other team‘s only chance is if you really f-up… that’s just wrong.

Risky play, as it should be. The CFL version is nuts.

I never knew that was allowed off a safety. Does it just have to go 10 yards like a regular kick?

Yep, exactly. Pats tried it last season against the Raiders, but it didnt work out.

That just looks like a free kick after a safety muffed by the Packers.

No, it was clearly intentional. No other reason to kick it as high as he did. Also, they were down by 2 scores with 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Again, the way they're lined up (on the 20) it appears to be a free kick following a safety. Sure, he kicked it high and short hoping for a miracle recovery but it wasn't a play from scrimmage.

Yeah, it was a punt after a safety. Cant do that on a regular punt.

If someone tries that on a free kick someone on the defending team should fair catch it... well within fair catch free kick FG range...

Yeah, come to think of it, that's probably the reason the fair catch free kick rule exists. Weirdest obscure rule in the NFL.

I don't like the CFL rule for the exact reason shown in the above video. The guy kicks it 6 inches and gets a fresh set of down.

I remember the old XFL had a rule (I have no idea if the new XFL/UFL has this same rule) where any punt that goes 25 yards or more is a free ball. So the occasional surprise 3rd down punt was a possibility, not to mention any regular 4th down punt would have to be fielded (or at least fair caught) by the defense.

Reminds me of Leon Lett's numbskull play against the Dolphins in the snow. Dallas blocked a last minute field goal attempt - but rather than just let the ball roll dead, he tried to pick it up, and in typical Leon-Lett-hotdog fashion he failed to do so. Rather than victory formation for the Cowboys, Miami got a second chance - much closer now - and kicked the FG for the win.

No idea how the officials up there would rule on that. If you fumble but it just happens to tumble off your foot and you recover - first down? That's bizarre....

Also I guess a fair catch is not a thing in the CFL - instead you have to give at least 5 yards of space to the returner when he catches the kick or it's a flag. The exception is the kicker they don't need to give 5 yards of space and I guess that loophole leads to a play like this being possible...
