There’s a million other coaches on the staff, in which Bill assumingely thinks are all capable. Easy to find somebody to talk to, unless Mac trusts none of them. Then you have a bigger issue on your hands

There are some simple things being needlessly worked over in this thread.


1. Jones has the stronger arm.
2. The Patriots were running different plays with Zappe than they were for Jones.
3. Zappe played bad teams, and still wet himself once he got into a catch up situation, so the whole "Zappe played well, except" has one hell of an "except" to it.


None of that really matters to the actual thread. None of that should be in question. And none of that is going to mean much come next season.

I mean I agree, I'm trying to more or less to make thay evident by looking at the circumstances to show: there's little ground to compare the two, and Zappe's accomplishments are being over embellished.

Quite possibly. Obviously, he wasn't getting his questions answered by Bluto or the faux quarterbacks coach. BB probably would've said, "Ask Bluto." Of course, what's missing from this picture is who Mac went to and why he felt it was necessary.

The biggest thing that separates Brady from Jones, beside the 20 year difference and the bigger brain, is what's hurting Jones now with Bill. Brady was a more subservient QB with an extreme sense of respect for authority. That made him the perfect player for an authoritarian like Bill. Mac Jones isn't like that and maybe no QBs are like that now. It could be a sign that Bill and Patricia are behind the times with the newer players and that they may need to move on from the my way or the highway approach.

I don't think its a generation thing. I'd reckon Rodgers and Peyton would NOT have gotten along with Bill.

I believe it's a status thing. Mac is a first round pick, as where Brady was a 6th round pick, so he had to be a bit more subservient

There’s nothing new about this generation. It is as it’s always been. And 20 years from now, this group will start saying that the next generation is disrespectful and entitled.

I don't get why people seem to lack awareness on this.

The reality is that there's always some young people and old people who don't get along (whether it's the young being unruly or the old folks being unreasonable and power trippy) every generation.

I seem to remember folks saying Zappe was tasked with a "simplified" offense that looked a lot like what worked for Mac in year 1. If this is the case, I remember Mac, too, looking a lot more confident. I guess the question at that point is, does Zappe look markedly more confident than year 1 Mac?

Again, to your point - too limited sample sizes - but that is I think one of the questions that should be asked in this hypothetical.

And I hope it gets answered in training camp, fairly and squarely, and regardless of draft status or seniority.

Mac Jones isn't Dan Marino, but Zappe was throwing lollipops out there. Usually accurate lollipops, but lollipops none the less.



Most QBs, this is a walk-in TD, not a circus catch.
Jones, probably, doesn't get enough depth on his drop, and either throws it out of the endzone or to the safety, but assuming he didn't, he lays that one right in there, that's stealing.

That was a poor pass Not because it was a weak throw but because it was thrown to the wrong shoulder. There's a difference.

IMO there is a distinction between Mac's and Zappe's relative arm strength. I think Mac can throw the ball further with air under it, on deep shots. I think Zappe is more mechanically sound and sharp, better with his feet, hips, release, timing and rhythm, and this results in flatter, crisper, "zippier" (for lack of a better term) passes on stuff under 15-20 yards.

They're very different QBs in many ways. Mac reminds me of a Manning; really good with touch passes, working the ball downfield, deadly precise with a clean pocket. But he doesn't handle pressure well, doesn't have good feet, doesn't like people near him.

Zappe reminds me of a short, stocky Brady in some ways (I'm not saying he's anywhere near Brady's level, just that I saw some similar traits. I'm sure there's a better comp out there but one didn't come to mind immediately). Zappe keeps his eyes downfield, has calm feet, feels pressure well, moves really well in the pocket, seems to process information quickly but calmly and makes smart decisions. Has a sense of self-assuredness and confidence to him. Poise. His stature is a limitation but he's not nearly as short as Brees, for instance.

Two different types of QBs. I would like to see Zappe get a shot at it, but I do recognize that Mac has a lot of positive traits, too.

Have you seen Ian's breakdowns on Zappe's mechanics/release? You keep going back to this well because it's what you want to see but demonstrably is not the case. Bailey played well in a relief role primarily hitting open first reads vs. soft defenses; the rest is tall tales, folklore and revisionist history.

To be fair those 23 pages include the standard AFM (Additional Forum Markup) that automatically adds 5-10 pages to added to any topic to debate Mac vs Zappe, Brady being the best all time or BB being the worst coach ever. I think this thread hit the trifecta.
