Surprise cut thread

Onwenu is in his 3rd year at very low dollars. He will not be cut. Hambright might start (I doubt it), but they will not cut Onwenu even if Hambright starts as Onwenu will be a backup. There is a log jam at LB, can't imagine we keep them all, but not sure any cuts at LB would surprise. A trade at WR, as has been previously mentioned, sounds reasonable if no injuries happen. Special team guys seem reasonable if Thornton, M Jones, and others shine to clear roster spots. Zappe will make the 53 unless he is awful (does not seem to be).

My pick is Hoyer who will be added back after a few weeks in the season. Keene might go but that is not a big surprise.
Hoyer's deal was 2 years for $4M, with $3M guaranteed - so cutting him means he still gets almost all of that money anyway. I actually wonder if that is the plan as long as Zappe looks good (and so far, he does look good). Cut Hoyer to make roster space, don't worry about the money because Hoyer's deal was almost fully guaranteed anyway. Hoyer floats around the facility and they add him back to the roster after a few weeks. Maybe even put him on the practice squad?

Jonathan Jones but he would be traded.
But a lot of depth at corner I could see it if the Jones pair shine right away.
My second pick is Justin Bethel.
Great special teamer spot defender but they opt for youth there.

I think if you cut Hoyer, you lose the entire guarantee, and would have to pay him twice (cap and real $$$) if he were brought back.

Hoyer is a better candidate to be traded to a backup QB desperate team, where he would only lose $1.3 and might even bring a pick back.

White would certainly be a surprise since he is on active pup. Have the Pats ever cut a player on PUP? I can’t recall it

You do lose the guaranteed $ but you only have to pay him whatever money he signs for if you bring him back. I would guess they'd ink him to a minimum level contract if he comes back in week 3 or something. He wouldn't care because he already made his guaranteed money for 2 years and he's not going to go anywhere else (and has said he does not want to go anywhere else).

Why has Meyers gotten so much hate the last 2 years. He's the only Brady-era rookie WR to make it out alive. And the longest tenured pass catcher on the Pats, and the most productive last year with Jones. Why would he be traded or cut???

Undervalued like crazy around these parts. Literally was the safety valve for Mac.

I doubt the practice squad, but float around the facility waiting for an injury seems reasonable.

I think they like Hoyer and it has been reported more than once that Hoyer's wife does not want the kids to move, hence the guaranteed contract. I think Hoyer stays here and I doubt they worry about a few million. But who knows.

Hate might be a stretch, but more and more posters and media are seeing him for what he is - a nice complementary WR, but not a guy who can headline a group. In fact, Greg Bedard has already expressed he’d like Bourne to take his place as the primary slot guy.

He was also not the most productive of the group. That goes to Bourne who was more efficient with his opportunities and it’s not even close. Meyers is not a guy that is going to outrun anyone, doesn’t provide many big plays with the amount of touches he gets, is awful after the catch and is allergic to the end zone. His game reminds me of Jabar Gaffney where he was a nice 3rd option at WR that could help move the chains on 3rd downs in 3-4 WR sets.

There is a reason Bill traded for Parker and drafted Thornton to get help on the outside so Meyers sees less volume of passes. In the end, It would not shock me if he received the Reche Caldwell treatment and shown the door after being the team’s #1 option a year prior.

Wowza. Cutting Onwenu would be - IMO - a massive surprise. In fact, I can only think of a handful of players who I’d consider « safer ».

I’d go White, but I’ll echo the poster who thinks he’ll retire instead. BB loves that guy.

I’ll go Guy.
I agree, but cutting White would not be that huge of a surprise considering the recent reports of poor progress from injury.

And yet all the love for Amendola, who in his very best years (including St Louis when he had 85 catches), never got close to having as good a year as Meyers did last season.

Yeah, there is some odd favoritism there. Meyers has improved dramatically every year in catches, and last year's YPC average drop was more about having a rookie QB than his performance. Plus he was undrafted so should get some of that traditional love.

He'll never be a fantasy football highlight real guy, so that's part of it, but neither was Amendola.

JJ Taylor
I'm not sure cutting an undrafted player who has touched the ball 42 times over two seasons would be considered a surprise cut. I think him actually making the 53 would be a HUGE surprise, and I'm pulling for him.

Amendola came up big in the playoffs, that is a big part of his love. Much the same as Mitchell who was ok in his rookie regular season then came up huge in the super bowl. People forget the lackluster regular season. Kind of funny, during the regular season there was huge amounts of hate towards Amendola on the board, people forget that, and it all went away when he came up big when it counted.

Current Brian Hoyer cap hit for 2022 = 1.76 million

If Brian Hoyer is cut and brought back, cap hit for 2022 = 3.080 million PLUS his veteran minimum salary (estimated around 1 million) - 4 million.

Do you think they eat 2.3 million in cap this year to save one spot and cut Hoyer for a short time?

I'm not saying Justin Bethel is the player, but his contract is the type for a cut/resign.

2022 cap 2.03
2022 hit if cut $1.67

So the team could bring him back (1.67 plus about 1 million salary). $500K loss. Reasonable.
