Report: Patriots 'ecstatic' with Mac Jones' offseason dedication

Mac Jones has not been resting on his laurels this offseason.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Patriots are "ecstatic" with Jones' "dedication" to work this offseason thus far.

"Jones has spent long hours at Gillette Stadium, often beating the coaching staff into the building to get a jump-start on film study for the day," Howe reported. "He is also taking ownership of the offense, willing to vouch for plays and concepts that he likes and pump the brakes on the stuff that hasn't worked."

This sounds like the team is just talking up Mac just doing what is expected of him in his role as future franchise QB.

Given his general intelligence -- 2020 #1 NCAA scholar athlete in all sports -- and reputed football intelligence, it would not be surprising if Mac early on in his career starts calling his own plays, especially when cursed with an inexperienced offensive coach. But no way he has the time or experience to build a game plan, even though he will likely be a significant contributor.

If the Pats offense does well this year, it will almost certainly be because Mac rises to the challenge and bootstraps him self into being a true franchise QB.

It also occurs to me that Bailey Zappe is also highly intelligent and worked with one of the most highly thought of young offensive minded coaches in the NCAA, Tyson Helton. And given Brian Hoyers' experience in the system, maybe the QB room will effectively lead the game planning!

Nelson Agholor: Mac Jones has definitely trained his butt off

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had a successful rookie season, piloting the team to a 10-7 record with a playoff appearance.

According to one of Jones’ receivers, the signal-caller has been putting in the necessary work to improve.

“He’s definitely trained his butt off, I can tell you that. I see it every day when he comes in here,” receiver Nelson Agholor said, via Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald. “He works his butt off, he’s here every day putting the time in. And, obviously, when he throws the football, he throws the football well, really well. I’m impressed with what he does every day and how he works.”

I like Mac. I think the franchise does as well. I’m curious to see how he progresses in year two and beyond. In many games last year - even if down - it seemed like he was competitive and made plays to give the team a shot. Showed toughness and desire.

Yup, Zappe is a nice prospect and Hoyer has a VAST amount of experience in the system. I’m very curious how things go. I doubt Mac is going to make game plans on his own, but I wonder if he will be involved in the game planning process and having some degree of say in what makes the final cut.

I hope Mac is able to take few weeks off and completely remove himself from anything football and competition related before the season starts. I know there are training gaps before the season but I think he is so driven that he isn’t taking any time off. Need to rest that mind and arm for a bit IMO…especially for a young player.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Would love to see that mental toughness too. Where the team doesn't feel like it's out of any game no matter how bleak because of their QB, but 1 step at a time.

When Brady was here the schedule was something like every Tuesday #12 would meet with BB to review the game plan for the upcoming game and he would provide input. I suspect this trend will continue this season as well, as Mac has a season under his belt, very intelligent and has reviewed quite a bit of film..
