Bill offered a 2nd and got turned down by Shanahan and Lynch who are quickly becoming a joke. Not only could they have cut bait with Jimmy contract, they get a 2nd out of it and they rejected it!

This is just too funny.

Let’s thank Kyle and John for this massive blunder.

These are one of those trade deals that you are happy never went through. If the Pats traded for Garoppolo, they probably don't draft Jones. No matter what Jones becomes, I think he has far more upside than Jimmy G.

I would have been so mad if they did this! Jimmy G is an injury machine! He's already missed multiple games this year. Glad we got Mac instead who has a lot more upside, it appears, as others have said.

I heard a report it also would have required Jimmy to take a big pay cut.

I can understand the Pats making that offer - probably already knew from Rosenhaus that he'd renegotiate that contract. To keep the money free this year.

Also, think it would have been great for Jimmy - he's been dissed upside-down out there by the 49'ers.

And with all of that, no thanks, I'll take Mac Jones. He's already answered more questions that Jimmy has in what, 6 years?

And if that’s true the 49ers are even dumber than I thought. They should have taken a 2nd and ran with it. That’s what they gave up for him when he actually HAD VALUE and before they made him look like a failure by giving up 3 first for another qb. Now they’ll get nothing.

So the 49ers didn’t want Brady because they thought Jimmy G was better, and then they turn down a trade to get rid of Jimmy G after realizing they made a mistake? LOL

Thank god we didn’t make that trade. Much rather have Mac.

This is assuming that Belichick wasn’t planning on drafting Mac after getting Jimmy G. The second rounder was used to get Barmore, who is quickly becoming a force.

Also, I forgot he has a no trade clause so he'd rather get paid while he can rather than get traded. However, the fact remains the offer was rejected.

They've made a long list of bad moves and the latest was that DeForest Buckner was willing to meet the 9ers half way on his extension demands, but the 9ers wanted no part of it. They turned their attention to Arik Armstead where they had more leverage due to him being injured and only having one good year.

Another rumor was that Trent Williams was about to walk to KC because the 9ers contract guy Paraag Marathe was cheaping out again but Kyle put his foot down and demanded the 9ers sign him. The dysfuntion continues in SF.

At the time I wanted them to bring back Jimmy but that was because I didn't think we had a shot at one of the top QBs. I also heard that Jimmy didn't want to adjust his deal and that was a stipulation to the trade. Either way if the 49ers had a chance to dump a guy who they clearly didn't like and get a second round pick for him and they passed that is ridiculous. If you're willing to pay that much to prove up you have to assume the guy you're taking is "the guy" so roll with him and sign RG3 or bring back Hoyer (both guys had played under Shanahan before) to back him up. I feel like there is some dysfunction between Shanahan and Lynch and it definitely seems like some of the shine has been knocked off the former.

I think if NE traded for Jimmy (for a first) then SF would’ve drafted Mac. They would be saying “we need him because he’s pro-ready and we got the #15 in return so that reduces the cost of this trade-up a lot. Plus we now have a lot of money free from trading Jimmy to improve our roster.”

Instead Bill didn’t bite so SF took the “higher upside” guy since they knew they’d be stuck with Jimmy this year. Bill then took Mac with his 1st, kept his 2nd and took Christian Barmore who looks like a stud too.

What would you rather have - Jimmy on a short term, free-agent QB contract, or Mac Jones on a 5 year rookie deal?

While this is possible, I have a hard time thinking SF would've still taken Lance if Jimmy wasn't on the roster. They would've needed to go get a starter for this year.

A week before the draft, my guy told me (paraphrase)....

A Jimmy G reprisal made lots of sense for NE but draft capital cost, contract price, and most importantly SF's reluctance to hand their starter's job to a rookie given the Niners belief they possessed a "built to win now" roster pretty much made any conversation between teams more a due diligence exercise than a meaningful dialogue between serious parties. Not happening!

My two cents then and now:
No way Bill would have offered more in draft capital than he received for Jimmy G years earlier (ego issues and admission that he sold JG to cheap).
And no way Bill would have taken on a contract that paid Jimmy G more than Brady ever made here.
And lets not discount the leverage JG (Don Yee) possessed...."I'm not negotiating a pay cut, I dare you to cut me and get nothing, I dare you to trade me and start a rookie"

Amen...

I’d be really pissed if they traded us Jimmy G and THEN drafted Mac at #3. Glad it worked out for us.
