Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

feels like posturing to me on both sides at this stage. Mike Reiss, who is obviously well connected, said in his column this morning that the Pats may just wait for Jimmy to become available in 2022. I'm not sure he just threw that out there without being fed something. Not surprised at that being fed into the media after the Niners claimed he would be their starter this year.

Can someone explain to me why Garoppolo is considered to clearly be the better NFL quarterback than Minshew? Given the much higher draft capital and massive disparity in their contracts, I don't know why Bill wouldn't be very aggressive about trading for Minshew, to compete with Cam, Stiddy and a draft pick.

I didn’t include Garoppolo’s rushing stats, because he doesn’t have any rushing production worth including.

So you think he'd rather stay with the coach/ownership that just gave up a fortune to replace him?

no, but doesn't seem like any other team is interested at whatever SF wants, so maybe he prefers the place that decided to pay him big money than the place that didn't. $25m base salary this year for him if he stays in SF or goes to a team willing to take that on. Most likely his last big pay year unless he plays the whole year and plays like a top-5/10 QB

obviously this is all moot if 49ers cut him but I don't think they will, I think they'll play him and probably expect him to get injured mid-way through the year and they'll be out of contention so they'll be able to play whoever they drafted the rest of the season.

From a Patriots perspective it would be because Garoppolo already knows their system and performed well in the time he played, which granted was a small sample size.

In 6 quarters: 72% 500 yards 4 TD 0 INT

After the draft, San Fran, with jimmy and the rookie, will be in the same position as kc a few years ago with smith and mahones.

good point and he plays for the jags so not really good team, the stats are looking good..

JG puts the S in small sample size. I’ll never forget those glorious 6 quarters in 2017 but given the draft pick and salary disparities, I’ll take my chances that Mishew will be able to pick up the offense with a almost a full offseason to study the playbook.

Not if you think you can win a SB this year and your bridge QB is someone who you think can get you there because he's already proven it. Which is the situation SF is in. They also aren't tied up in longtermmoney for Jimmy so they can deal with paying him this year and moving on next year.

But then the question becomes: If we save this money this year, who is left to really spend it on? Why not keep a guy you know can help you win (even if you don't think he's the long term solution) since you can afford his salary? It's not like they need to move money to get under the cap. Sure, you could bring in an Alex Smith (who, by the way, had a worse passer rating than Newton last year, believe it or not), but you've already got a bridge QB and you're not getting a ton of impact guys with any money you save by moving Jimmy.

Now, they might want the picks they get from him, or they're really intent on throwing the kid into the fire right away, but they're not going to move him unless they feel they're getting fair value, because they have no need to.
If you don't want to spend it on someone this year, roll it over to next year.
I hear what Lynch is saying, Jimmy G is not going anywhere, thats what he should say, for now...
I just don't believe it and I don't think any team is buying that either. Perhaps before that trade up, that might have worked. But now you give up three firsts and a third to move up to take a quarterback and then turn around and say yep, we are going to keep Jimmy G and his 50 million dollars over the next two years.

Jimmy G got some leverage to, they can't trade him unless he agrees to it. So maybe he sits on his 50 million, they cut him and Patriots pick him up then. Its going to be interesting though, can't wait to see how this all pans out.

Hey, if Cam Newton can be a legit QB this year I'll be more than happy.

the keys newton being a better QB this year are:

1.) dominate run game.
2.) limiting third and long.

but make no mistake about it—- newton is beyond horrible,

I agree in principle, but there's a difference between being aggressive and being reckless. Belichick and Lynch have a good relationship. It's what led to the trade of JG to the 49ers in the first place. If BB really wants Jimmy, he'll work something out with Lynch, and if Lynch really wants to trade him, he'll get the best deal he can. If another team is offering a first, Lynch won't just do it immediately, he'll see if Belichick wants to top it. So it doesn't make much sense for Belichick to just throw whatever he needs to throw at the 49ers to get them to trade Jimmy NOW. These things will be discussed and will happen when they make sense. Be aggressive, but don't be stupid. There's a very good chance you can get Jimmy (if he's actually available for trade) without giving up #15, for example.
"In Bill we trust". The last time I thought BB was reckless was when they signed Stephon Gilmore for that boat load of money, and we all know how that turned out.

Seeet, another year or watching cam suck and yelling at the tv.

I know you meant 2016 but just wanted to point it out. He didn’t play in 2017 until after he was traded midseason to SF.

Here’s all his highlights from those 6 quarters in 2016, and I gotta say he looked really good for that moment in time:

@ChrisR2223, now that we can finally put a nail in this "JimmyG rumor," can you please start a thread about the more realistic "Bill interested in Johnny Football rumor?" LMAO
This doesn’t end it to me. Since when do we trust any talking heads?

Ooops....my bad. Yes, meant 2016.

The fact there’s only 2 videos here and not 4 is exactly why he shouldn’t return.

I don’t disagree with any of this. I’m not in favor of giving up #15 for him, and I wouldn’t give up multiple high picks for him either. If Garrapolo reworked his deal so it was palatable to Belichick I would be in favor of giving up next years first for him because I believe it would be between 26-32, and with the year wait that would actually be 2nd round value for a QB who is talented and knows their system inside out. What I am not in favor of in any way is going through 2021 with Newton as the starter. I think that would waste all the work they did this off-season.
