There are a few dwindling posters here who remember the late 80s and early 90s USNET sports newsgroups. Every team had a newsgroup but opposing fans could post uncensored. I know old coots like my captain and XLIX remember those days.

USENET's "Tollbooth Bob" Jensen!
Remember the DT they drafted? The BBWK, Bowling Ball With Knives. Another Jest BUST!

And then in the Bills USENET newsgroup, Bender. Hated Flutie. Big fan of superbust QB Rob Johnson, the tackling dummy. "He's Tall and has a Great Arm!"

Plus there are some others not quite as old posting here who remember the Patriots Mailing List from the 90s (still active). Some GOOD funny stories to tell there but I'll let others go first.

Jets are set at every position!

Good old alt.sports.football.pro.ne-patriots, fire up tin and off you go. Best part was you could just x-post to jets, bills, etc. No censor, no moderator, just troll galore. It was fun for sure.

I remember Bob, and SAR (I or II I can't remember).

I 100% remember Bob Jensen from KFFL...I used to argue w him nonstop...

I can't say I go back to the 80's (didn't even realize the usenet was around back that far) but I was definitely there during the 90's to early 00's. I remember SAR I (Rubenstein) talking about how the Red Sox would lose all their popularity if they ever won a World Series.

Needless to say, he was wrong.

Ah, Usenet! Those were fun days, with Tollbooth Bobby, SAR, Bender and the rest of the gang. That's where I first got to know people came here, and eventually migrated with them. I remember there were a few decent Jest fans even, like Kay Sahagian, whom I enjoyed talking music with among other things. Perhaps it's the mists of time putting everything in a Hollywood vaseline haze but I seem to remember that it was less vicious in those days, although we had our fun.

I was on both the mailing list and newsgroup. I did the newsgroup for almost a decade. I kept in touch with a few of the guys for a few years.

ëuphemism , who was a big shot with the Fin NG.

Tudor (aka dcat4939) in the JetNG, Raiderjet. In our NG Pratt, Kent, Quigon, Bradtor and loads more. I actually miss them.

Some of us still play FFL in the bones of the the old UPUFF league (run by Keith Hayes) and 2+ leagues run by dcat (tutor), including PatNG and JetNG former posters.

What's this mailing list?

For my own curiosity, how was one able to post in forums in the late 80's before dial up modems were widely available for consumers ?

.

Beginning to think that either I'm the only one who will get this reference to the Pats' mailing list or all the people who might have gone to bed for the night.

I didn't use it but a quick google indicates Prodigy offered Usenet access as of 1984, as far as at-home services.

Mostly, I think it was probably a lot of people working for the tech companies or at college.

Yep, and by 1991 or so, you had people playing online across distances on games like Falcon 3.0. My father did that and he was a power lineman.

Bob Jensen BBWK - classic stuff!

As to the Patriots Mailing list anyone remember the infamous Fifi & Mimi episodes? A poster, we'll name him George, accidentally posted on the Mailing List an email to a friend describing the attributes & services of "massage ladies" Fifi & Mimi. Hilarity ensued.
George was thoroughly embarrassed. Then maybe a month or 2 later he made the same mistake again posting the same topic.
Good times!

College, VT100 terminal, SunOS or VAX, just command line, rn and then tin programs are the 2 ones I remember using.

I can't remember if I did listserv for pats or not. So long ago.

I can't remember the first gui one I used in Windows but you could configure to download the group and do everything offline on a program using dial up. Good stuff.

Was that Bob George?
