Oh no I was reminded this morning that the last time McDaniels was OC and we picked a pair of tight ends, we got busts in Davis Thomas and Garrett Mills in 2006. Same thing classic TE and then hback type back to back picks. The same terrible draft McDaniels got Maroney and Chad Jackson. maybe the worst draft class of the Belichick era. Likely more applicable than the Gronk draft which McDaniels wasn't a part of while he was destroying Denver.
Since when is McDaniels calling the shots when it comes to draft picks? You are really reaching here.

Yeah I agree...Whatever influence he might've had in the draft process was lost at around the same time, not so coincidently, as the rise of Thanksdad Stevie began...

I remember reading in a chat or article long time ago that Reiss said McDaniels pushed for Maroney and Jackson. Don't know about the other guys though.

Yeah I remember the same thing...Billy & Skippy had CJack on the whiteboard drawing some plays...This happened during the Urban Meyer Influence on their draft decisions, before Saban was hired/got things going at Alabama...

Urban Meyer has always influenced BB. He’s a big reason BB selected JG.

Two brutal misses when the obvious picks were Williams and Jennings. Classic case where a team ignores college production for “potential” based on combine numbers.

The big red flag for Maroney was all his highlights were him running through massive holes. This was also mentioned by scouts as a knock on him. You rarely saw him getting tough yards running through trash.

Who is JG?

Michael Holley wrote about it in his book Patriot Reign. The Patriots scouts did NOT want to draft Maroney or Jackson. McDaniels worked out both Maroney and Chad Jackson himself. McDaniels' kid brother coached Maroney in college. Belichick listened to his assistant coach and not his scouts and wasted high picks on Maroney and Jackson. Deja vu 10 years later with Sony Michel and N'Keal Harry, another RB with zero trucking ability and a WR who can't run routes. Another concerning thing for me is McDaniels was also OC when we busted on 3rd round TE Dave Thomas and 4th round pick TE/H-Back Garrett Mills.

That book cane out in 2004. That draft was in 2006. You must be mixing it up with something else.

Aside from that, that’s accurate of what story I’ve heard as well.

I still can’t fathom what belichick saw in Harry that he liked better than AJ Brown. Watching both on tape and examining their stats, it’s not even close. Brown by a landslide.

As for Sony...well look no further than Cunningham-Dunlap. Drafted the wrong teammate again!

Belichick listens to his coaches, people would be surprised how much he allows his staff to give input. He's getting terrible scouting from McDaniels. At least we've hit on Scarnecchia's OLine suggestions.

no way josh should take over when Bill retires unless he is given zero power at the GM Position

Definitely like what I'm seeing from Asiasi, he's probably gonna have to grow into the TE role in terms of mastering the schemes, but in terms of physical tools, he's got everything you look for.

I think we're eventually looking at Steve Belichick and Jonathan Kraft taking the franchise over sometime between now and a decade from now.

What's worse - much, Much worse - than bypassing Dunlap in favor of Jermy Cunnyham is bypassing the Charlie Weis-trained Golden Tate in favor of Cunnyham...Think he coulda maybe helped us during SB46...or the 2012 AFCC...or the 2013 AFCC...?

New assistant QB coach Jedd Fisch coached Asiasi in 2016 at Michigan and 2017 at UCLA. Nothing of note in games during those years (18 yards in 2016, ineligible due to transfer in 2017), but he would’ve had a really good view behind the scenes.

Hopeful praise to
Belichick for hiring Fisch and trusting his inside opinions to draft Devin and Uche.

BB got to hear the true story of Devins UCLA suspension. Many teams were wary but BB obviously was ok with it.

When a guy has already done this, the woulda-coulda-shoulda game becomes irrelevant.

In his rookie year Michel knocked 3 different defensive players out of the game. Forget what the team was, but he was just devastating people...

Asiasi looks like a man among children on all his tape...dude plays big and is agile. No comparisons but he is going to be very successful if can hang on to that great catch percentage he had in college.

I don't think people realize how detrimental not having a legit FB, TE, or decent O Line is to the running game... I wouldn't pin this one on Sony. He had a great roookie season when we had all of those things.

I also don't understand how people crap all over BB for draft mistakes. The man has assembled teams good enough to go to NINE superbowls and a handful other AFCCG... So despite the board full of "captain hindsights", He has built some pretty damn good teams - and has done it better than any other coach in the history of the NFL.

Not saying we need to drink the BB kool-aid, but it's kind of ridiculous the number of posters that do nothing but complain out drafting player X instead of player Y 4-5 years after the fact.

Agree but if Sony was a top 10 back he could of made plays on his own at times.
His own holes break some tackles.
I agree the cast wasn’t great around Him but your a first round pick running back you should be able to make some things happen on your own.
