TMZ reporting the passing of Kobe Bryant

perhaps the greatest, most credible eye witness in history.
I don't find myself saying this all that often with "dramatic/traumatic" events but what a great amount of detail he had.

We had a woman off her meds try to "break into" our house last Xmas morning (Xmas 2018) and I was literally looking at her through my Ring doorbell while on the phone with dispatch and the description I gave was quite different than the reality of the situation. I guess I don't have that "3 o'clock in the morning clarity" gene.

I'm overlooking the fact that this was from tabloid show "Weekend Extra" but he seemed pretty tuned-in to what was going on.

Thx, RW. Black box will clarify eyewitness accounts. Other accounts have the helicopter going 180 mph into the hillside.
Yep. When he said it was going only 5mph over the town then to slam into the hill makes you assume the pilot accelerated and wham- right into the hill. Ugh.

Its a brave new world out there.

TMZ had two reports on this (including the very first) and both proved accurate. ABC News reporter says that all four of his daughters were on the helicopter...which, well ya, wasnt.

Perhaps but the accounts I’ve seen have him climbing at a 100mph then accelerating downward to 180mph. And those are ones that are semi-official going with the flight pattern.

The eyewitness you presented makes more sense to a pilot losing his way.

BBC said it was LeBron in the chopper.

This is a tragic and sad event, absolutely. But personalizing it to this extent is worth examining as to why.

it’s pretty simple. Sports are an escape for a lot of people in the real world. Sports are my life. Even though I’m not a big nba guy I loved watching Kobe and saw him play in tons of big games. When you threw something into a trash can at school, we always exclaimed “Kobe!”.

guy was a legend and just so tragic what happened to him, and his daughter who seemed to absolutely adore him.

Yea like you say the black box- which will have mph, altitude, in-flight recording, all the instrumental data will tell us what the pilot was going though.

Kinda reminds me what JFK Jr.went through (disorientation, sudden speed/altitude changes, etc)

What Tanguay said about Kobe’s “behavior off the court” was not only downright ridiculous but didn’t make any sense. He was smart to delete that tweet quickly.

Thing is JFK jr had no experience flying at night. This pilot had experience in bad weather/training.

Gut wrenching and beyond sad. Kobe's daughter Gigi's lifelong dream was to play for the UCONN women's basketball team....RIP to all on that copter.

As a competitor, I would hope that fans feel the same way about Brady as I do about Kobe. Of course I “hated” the guy because he was a Laker and the rivalry, but I could never say I truly disliked him and always respected him as a player. The guy just had such a drive to be the best. He never sucked up to the press and didn’t over market the crap out of himself. He just wanted to be the greatest basketball player and other celebrity things never seemed to be a big thing for him like so many athletes. I can’t say I truly respect a lot of other athletes in the same way. They seem to be really into crafting their own image and brand. Kobe just wanted to win and had such a killer instinct.

one day the brady haters will convert like we did with kobe, probably a more gradual turn though. Very shortly after kobe’s lakers stopped being a title threat the heat super team was formed and were pretty unanimously hated, made it alot easier for people to stop hating kobe. It was not long after that which I could say i no longer had a hateful bone in my body towards kobe and appreciated him. Unless another superpower or villain emerges in football it will probably take years after Brady stops competing for titles for people to stop hating him. But they will eventually

I know a few old time Laker fans and they are cool with Larry, DJ, Kevin and Chief. They are even ok with Greg Kite.

Danny Ainge- Still hated.

It will be interesting to see. From my guesstimate (you like that throwback word?) 75% of the country used to absolutely hate Brady. The number is probably closer to 25% now, though very, very few, I mean like under 5% will tell you they think he's an overrated quarterback. And I think the moment he retires, there will most definitely be a new team to hate, or just a rival to hate. Brady will beloved by a huge amount of the country when he retires. We Pats fans think we have it bad, but since around 2016/17, the only places you can find hate about TB12 is jackhole outliers like Max Kellerman or Rob Parker, or if you really want to punish yourself with the PFT or Twitter trolls. It's impossible to find a mainstream article that declares Brady is not the greatest QB ever. That's remarkable because he still dominates sports talk. You find something worse than hate when you talk about other guys like Brees: you find irrelevance. Just no one cares enough to really discuss most players on the national stage; they may get some shout outs but it isn't their face plastered on the wall behind where the debaters sit; it's always Brady. That's what other fanbases deal with.

But the hate for Brady has never been about anything other than his place as the face of the NFL for almost 20 years. You'll see the same haters all over Twitter or NBA forums all up LeBron's jock for something every day. And LeBron fans think he is hated and underappreciated (and actually he is.) Steph Curry was just SO hated during that five year run (which paled in comparison what the Pats/Brady have done), and it was the same garbage about how all Warriors fans are terrible, the refs, it's fixed, they're overrated, they're lucky, etc. etc.

Just take your pick of dominant team sports athlete who is the guy who wins the most and teams are most envious of, and he'll be the most jealously ridiculed as well....until he retires and is a saintly, beloved former player who brings everyone back to "those good old days."

Bottom line is the Air Traffic Controller should have denied the request and the pilot should have known better.

Not a Tanguay fan, but how was it ridiculous?

Where he crashed was uncontrolled airspace. No permission from ATC was required. The request was from earlier passing through a controlled airspace, but he was through it by the time of the crash. I don’t think ATC can just deny that request because they feel like it. That sort of clearance is often used especially for returning aircraft. If the weather is bad some aircraft cannot go IMC. They may require that sort of clearance to land.

Do we know if there is a black box? Not all aircraft have them. And some have much more limited abilities than the airline ones.

I thought there was one in all aircraft? No?

Not all. A typical Cessna 172 for example won’t have one. Most passenger carrying aircraft do but some is based on requiring it if it was manufactured after a certain date. Some is based on passenger carrying capacity. The S-76 can carry 13 passengers I think. Looking at some of the regulations:

Flight Data Recorders

Required for:
  • Multiengine turbine-powered airplanes or rotorcraft seating 10+ passengers
  • Multiengine turbine-powered airplanes or rotorcraft seating 6+ passengers andrequiring two pilots
  • Large airplanes meant for use either over 25,000 feet
  • Large turbine-powered airplanes
  • Turbine-powered transport category planes
