Hes gonna go great with Rudolph

He ran a 4.86 40 so a bit on the slow side...
Just for the hell of it....

Roberts

Height: 6' 4"
Weight: 270 pounds
Arm Length: 33.00 inches
Hand Size: 11.50 inches
40 Yard Dash: 4.86 seconds
20 Yard Dash: 2.82 seconds
10 Yard Dash: 1.69 seconds
Vertical Leap: 30.0 inches
Broad Jump: 110 inches
20 Yd Shuttle: 4.51 seconds
Three Cone: 7.05 seconds

The hand size is what sticks out. Bigger than Gronk's? Wow

Pretty good 3 cone for a man that size.

Not a terrible athlete but certainly not an explosive one.

Looks like it's a conditional 7th rounder in 2020.

I really like this trade. Super low, almost non-existent risk for a relatively talented player who may actually be good if he can stay on the field. Still young (25) and super cheap (under $1m per year), and on the books for this year and next if he works out. Typical BB move. Looks good.

We only really heard about Lacosse during OTA's. None of the other TE's seemed to get noticed (not necessarily their fault, as it's hard to prove you're a good blocker when you're not in pads). Adds another piece to the competition for TE3 (week 5 and beyond).

PFF scouting report: Michael Roberts, TE, Toledo | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

Name: Michael Roberts
School: Toledo
Position fit: Inline tight end with ability to be moved around

Stats to know: Earned the highest overall grade and second-highest receiving grade among draft-eligible tight ends in the 2016 season.

What he does best:

  • A former walk-on, Roberts’ breakout 2016 season coincided with a change from Phillip Ely to Logan Woodside under center; the result was 16 touchdown receptions after scoring four the season prior.
  • Strong hands — only three dropped passes out of 51 catchable targets in 2016.
  • Uses his frame well to shield defenders, particularly on back-shoulder throws; red-zone weapon.
  • Ran a diversified repertoire of routes; seven touchdown receptions on go routes in 2016 season.
  • Utilizes strong core, wingspan to drive blocks — only one quarterback pressure allowed the last three seasons combined.
  • High-effort run blocker — fifth-highest average run-blocking grade per snap over the last three years in the 2017 TE draft class.
Biggest concerns:

  • Not an explosive athlete; ran a 4.86-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, and the lack of straight-line speed shows up on tape.
  • Averaged only 3.7 yards after the catch per reception, tied for 136th in the nation in 2016.
  • High-energy playing style can sometimes lead to emotional outbursts.
  • Minimal special teams experience.
Player comparison: Damon Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars (retired)

Look up Jones’ career. At 6-foot-5, 270-pounds, Jones was a classic No. 2 tight end for the Jaguars from 1997–2001, doing strong work as a run blocker and catching 11 touchdowns as a red-zone threat. Roberts can fill a similar role in a two-TE-heavy offense, where he can block and catch touchdowns.

Bottom line: Roberts may be limited athletically, but his big body and run-blocking ability have a place in the league. He knows how to use his body to create just enough of a window to move the chains and become a strong red-zone option while providing strong run-blocking at the point of attack.

I think most of us who weighed in on the TE position felt losing Gronk's (and Allen's) pass and run blocking was a huge loss.

With Roberts, (based on everything I have read) he has the potential to be very good in both those areas.

According to the local writers, his problem has been commitment to being a "blocking" TE and injury. He missed a team meeting last year and was suspended for a game. Also had some weight issues.

16TDs Sr year at Toledo....wow.

Pats gave up a 7th rounder in 2020 so by no means is he a roster lock.

Lets hope for the best and he sticks.

Gronkwhoski?

With Roberts as the blocker and LaCosse as the receiver, our TE group is shaping up to be underwhelming yet functional nonetheless. Watson should add a more complete element after a month too.

I agree. Considering we're rebuilding the TE position from the ground up we have a fairly decent collection of pieces.

We'll see. I'm no expecting much here. Despite what he did in college I have no hope he'll ever be able to catch the ball. If he could he would have shown that by now.

As far as blocking who knows. Maybe it will be note worthy and maybe not. While I appreciate a TEs ability to block unless you are amazing at it I don't care much. If you're gonna get a TE mostly for blocking I'd rather just throw another OL man out there and not play games about it. As far as I'm concerned having a TE eligible OT catching a pass can be more important.

Those Nate Solder catches worked so well because they were unexpected. No reason not to have a back up OT learn to catch a little than use him at TE unless you have a guy you REALLY like one way or the other.

I don't see them team carrying 3 TEs and I don't see them cutting Watson or LaCrosse (due to his contract situation). At best this is probably a 4 week rental. But honestly it's likely just another camp body.

Did we throw to Solder more than the 1 time?
