Slight downer....

2003 was amazing too. Poole was very good and Eugene Wilson has a good rookie season. Asante was in his second year and Antwan Harris made some plays.
Poole was a beast. I believe him and Ty Law led the league in pass breakups that year. It was pointless for teams to throw on the outside against them.

Watch us now cut Devin because chaos.
I can't believe you got 2 dislikes for this post. Like, you were serious.
Besides, ......

Can we get the numbers before we celebrate ?

Maybe 3.5 per is my guess?

With the way he played last year and a solid track record to back it up 5 or 6M per year wouldn't surprise me.

By the way... It should be pointed out that at this point the Pats are projected to be over the cap by my estimation. I say that assuming that they will sign both Gost and Allen for about 6 million total and that they will keep their top rookie draft picks.

I also assume McCourty won't be a cheap contract. The Pats entered the day with about 12.4M in cap space and with McCourty, Bolden, Allen and Gost they should burn through all of it. That doesn't even count the draft picks or the nest egg they like to have of about 3-4M going into the season.

I know Brady is going to redo his deal but I they will need to dump more salary to make this work. They either need to cut Clayborn or do something about one of the other big contracts on their sheet.

Hell yeah. This secondary is now set for 2019.
We need to add some young blood , especially in the back end, so not really set but it's good enough if the season started tomorrow.
Note to BB: DO NOT reach for another Jordan Richards. We are all still traumatized from that experience.

Maybe Devin extended a year and the Patriots made some of his 2019 pay a
bonus so they could spread it out over two years?

Dawson and Obi are young plus we will likely add another safety through the draft.

From a team fan point you should like this. Gives the Pats some leverage in getting DMac to re-sign with the team at a lower number than he might get in Free agency.

Melifonwu could be that guy... He came in midway last season, so he has a half a year and now will get a full pre-season in the system.
True. Right now he's more of a ST'er. Will see what he can do in TCamp but it's pretty much a given Bill will sign or draft another safety. Most likely draft. Good, not great, talent at the top and about 10 deep. Abram looks like he can start from day 1.

Im sensing a second or a third round pick being a Safety for the future, but we are STACKED on the secondary

Im actually very excited to see Year 2 JC and Gilmore together. That could be a scary duo

Frankly I don't recall the Pats ever having a more complete secondary in my lifetime of watching the team (started in 1985 at 9 years old). Obviously Law and Harrison were a class above on their own, but taking into account the entire rotation (starters, situational guys, backups) in the entire defensive secondary, it's as stacked as it could reasonably be during the salary cap era.

Well, the 85 team with Clayborn, Lippett, Marion, James was pretty damn good.

I am hoping that Obi will develop to be much more than just a STer. He has CB speed and agility and was supposedly a smart kid. Injuries and the coaching change seemed to have sabotaged his time in Oakland.

I REALLY want to see him getting some consistent snaps on the defensive side. Chung, who usually plays over 90% of the defensive snaps) could use some down time this year. Plus I can really see him being a great matchup option against certain TE's and big WR's,
This kid is 6'4 and over 220.

That being said, this secondary has the potential to be the best in the league. And in this day and age, building a strong secondary is FAR more important than adding any diva/cap busting WR!

Jason was huge for the Pats down the stretch, love the guy. SO happy he is back. I also feel, just conjecture here, but I bet he's a great help to the young guys as well. Like a coach on the field. GREAT signing.

this continuity in the back end should allow us to do some crazy coverage schemes... maybe give the front a little more time to get to passer
