Great Reiss piece on lessons of 2018 team

Top notch article.

I really liked the beginning. There are a lot of salient points there. The hate the Pats get is a symptom of the loser mentality sweeping across this country; the idea that numbers DO define you, you can't win, and if you can, the only way is by gaming the system. It's a loser culture, and one the Pats reject, and it's one I'm teaching my daughters to reject.

If anything what we have learned as Pats Fans is that the details do matter, how many times have we heard from the players after a really great play that they practiced it??.. Malcolm Butler in SB 49 for example. Then there is not overreacting or dwelling a bad play or a bad loss.. move on and focus on the task..

Implied but left unsaid in the 'Every year is a blank slate' section regarding meritocracy as fundamental to success in a team setting is one of the real keys to the success of Belichick as a GM. Performance talks and perception walks, Bill never lets the cash invested in a FA or a players spot in the draft determine his spot on the roster. He isn't concerned with appearing 'wrong' to the outside world about an acquisition but rather with being right about who he puts on the field.

As more Patriot's coaches move to other teams, it will be interesting to see if they have success in promoting these concepts. Matty P's second year in Detroit will be one to watch.

I learned that it's how you finish, not how you start. I realized that it's not worth getting worked up over a bad week 2 and 3 loss. The true season is December & January. Plenty of teams start out hot during an NFL season. Very few peak when it matters most. Most of all, I learned to never ever doubt a Brady & BB led team. No matter how bleak things look, there's always a chance to win it all with them at the helm.

Not calling you out, but I'm amazed at how people write them off completely. After 28-3, all doubts should have been removed. As long as there is the physical capability to win, they have a chance.

I was on board with a roster retooling and I stand by pretty much all my proposed roster changes, but until it's 0:00 on the clock of the final game of the season, there's always a chance.

. . . and even in the 28-3 win, we weren't winning when there was 0:00 on the clock.

Bravo sir

This is why I took exception to those Pats fans who called the season over this year. ALL of us should know by now that this isn't a team to quit on at any time.

Reiss needs to move on from ESPN.....

ESPN must pay very good though.....

Right, with BB and TB, it's never ovah til it ts ovah.

I had serious doubts after the Pittsburgh loss. Brady didn't look the same. The offense as a whole was struggling. The defense was usually poor on the road. Pats got a huge break when Philly beat Houston. But still doesn't change the fact the team as a whole improved.

The team does need a re-tooling. But I am not betting against them next season.

I feel like Simon Peter as I doubted this team's commitment early in the season, then again later after the Miami fiasco and finally a 3rd time when entering the playoffs feeling that they might miss the AFCCG. Once the Chaagizz game started I abruptly went into "Somebody has to win the damn trophy. Why not us?" mode.

I never "quit" on them. I just had serious doubts after the Pittsburgh loss.

I was only referring to those fans who said "the season's over." Unfortunately, there were a few of them.

We were all skeptical, but it seemed to peak after the loss of Josh Gordon and the loss to the Steelers. That brought out more negativity than ever before.
