Negotiations with free agents begin on March 10th, with the season and the cap starting on March 13th at 4PM.

We can't expect a lot to happen. After all, there will be some vacationing. The combine will take place (perhaps with some trade talks taking place there).
============

DECIDE ON RFA's AND FRANCHISEES

1) I expect that we will re-sign JONES to a 3 year contract. The cost won't be huge. The cap cost will be the same or less than the alternative, a first or second level tender. If no deal can be reached, he'll be tendered.

2) We always tender/re-sign ERFA's. HOLLISTER is the one for this year.

3) For me, GORDON is a no-brainer. I would re-sign him with a very low bonus, and cut him at the end if necessary. If there is no contract, we could tender him at the lowest level.

4) Will we franchise anyone? We could franchise FLOWERS or GOSTKOWSKI. Flowers would take a huge bite out of our cap and would necessitate other immediate moves.

RE-SIGN WHO WE CAN
Realize this is before the players are talking to other teams. So, few get signed in this period, usually lower level players. We might have opportunities to re-sign Simon, Hill, McClellan, Schwenke, Humber, and Ryan.

Waddle might have learned from last year, and be willing to re-sign. All are good re-signs.
===============

CUTS, EXTENSIONS OR RE-STRUCTURES FOR CAP REASONS

A couple of these will be needed later, just before the season starts. My gut says that any reworking for Brady or Mason will take place then.

So, what will be done immediately?

ALLAN could be extended. He certainly won't play under his current contract. He might want to wait until Gronk makes his decision.

The team might be able to complete negotiations with the MCCOURTY's, extending Devin and re-signing Jason.

The only potential cut I see is Clayborn, although I do NOT think that is a good idea. This move can wait until camp, when the team knows what they have at DE, secured from various sources.

MAKE INITIAL OFFERS TO MOST OF THE REST

FLOWERS
T BROWN (no chance if he is considered a top LT starter by other GM's)
GOSTKOWKSI
DORSETT
PATTERSON
SHELTON
M BROWN

Why wait with the Brady deal? He has one year left and extending his contract before free agency will give us more cap room to work with.

I might consider tagging Trent Brown. Gives us a year without having to replace LT again. Keeps the teams best unit intact. Gives us a year to find out more on Wynn. I believe the $ is easier to swallow than tagging an DE.

Since the analytics guys rated Brown so low, I bet other GMs are really reticent to offer him anything big. They probably believe he's a product of Brady's quick release and the timing offense, and that he wouldn't work well outside New England, especially as San Fran gave up on him. They'd be bidding against themselves essentially since this is a player that has more worth in New England than anywhere else.

Trey Flowers is a must-sign for me--all efforts should go there.

Yes, this is what I had thought. As Miguel had suggested a month ago, a $10M AAV contract for Brown seems like a very good idea. Since then, many folks seem to think that Brown will get Solder money.

I don't know how much we should be willing to pay. My thought is at least $10M AAV and maybe as much as $12M. Obviously the 2019 cap hit would be less than that. Miguel's contract proposed $5M.

Signing Flowers isn't about effort. It is about money. Are the patriots willing to pay what others are willing to pay? How much is Flowers willing to accept in a patriot contract. I could see the pats signing a 3 year $45M contract (with caps of $10M, $15M and $20M, and a $25M guarantee). I'm not sure that this will be enough, or that the patriots will pay more.

Flowers should be priority numero uno. I just don't think they tag him at the price DEs get. For him I think we try to get a long term deal but he's likely testing the market and hopefully BB is willing to match whatever he finds.

For Brown if we can get him cheaper and longer term I'm all for it but if not I think the tag might actually work here as the cost of a starting LT isn't too far off the tag number and we might prefer to keep Brown short term anyway if Wynn could be a LT.

What is the tag number for OTs? Solder certainly won’t help us there and I expect he is not the only crazy-money tackle contract out there.

Last year it was like 14 mil. Not sure on this year's number but I'm assuming about the same.

Because then you can't use "we only have so much cap room" as a negotiating strategy. That in addition to "our QB is only making so much so we can't pay you more than that" has been one of the more frequent lines according to Howe and Perry.

Brown will not sign anything below the franchise tag number (estimated to be 14.2m).

Not when FA opens on the open market and most certainly not as part of an extension with the Pats before FA. As much as I love @Miguel I don't understand why he expects the market to be that low for OT.

Hell, lets just look at the most obvious team that might want to sign him. The Texans have about 60m in cap space and a OL that was getting Watson killed last year. Yeah they have Clowney to take care of but if they don't fix their OL nothing will matter because they are stopping the development of their supposed franchise QB.

I do not recall ever saying that about Brown. I said on January 15th that I expected Brown's next contract to be large enough to qualify for a 3rd round pick. A 10M APY is on the cusp of being a 4th rounder.

Isn't Gordon suspended indefinitely?? It seems as though when he was with Cleveland Rogah had a lot of patience with him, but now that he is connected to the "evil empire" from Foxboro he may have lost his tolerance for him.. I would take a chance with him, but not sure it will be allowed.

Allen is very important to keep at TE as this team moves to be a running ball control offense

Hogan is terrible, bring back Amendola cheap

Try to keep Trent Brown. He's an elite LT. Pats OLine was maybe the best ever the last 20 years.

Try to keep Trey Flowers. No immediate replacement seen.

Even though we have his rights does anyone in their right minds think BB would bring Gordon back on this Team?? The Patriots gave him a chance and he relapsed. I am sure BB lives by the old saying "once bitten twice shy." I think the Pats will make sure they address the WR Position this Off-Season and not leave it in limbo like they did in 2018. I expect them to make a serious run at Adam Humphries he would be a excellent addition going forward.

The team not addressing the WR position and leaving it somehow im limbo is one of the worst narratives of the season. They tried a lot and the majority of players got injured in camp or could never leave IR and are on to their 10th surgery. Hell they even brought in Gordon 3-4 weeks into the season.

For the record, Brady has approximately $13M in salary that can be converted into signing bonus. A two-year extension could free up about $8.7M; a three-year extension could free up $9.7M.

Doesn’t kraft personally work with brady’s Team on brady’s Contracts?

Isn’t the decision to talk about extending Brady a kraft call?
