Just focusing on this team, 2011-present. Why is that the EXPERIENCED team seems to suffer from the bright light jitters????? Seems like every time the opponent gains tremendous confidence early on because the Patriots shoot themselves in the foot. I’m wondering why they keep disappointing, especially on offense, and why every SB feels like someone dumped cold water on my face early in the game.

46: Giants drive down the field with multiple 3rd down conversions and kick field goal, establishing control of the game. Patriots first play from scrimmage is a safety (!). Giants score touchdown on ensuing drive to take 9-0 lead.

49: After trading defensive stops, Patriots drive deep into Seahawks territory. Brady throws terrible red zone interception on 3rd down (by dumb luck, Lane breaks arm in INT return which later proves to be a major advantage for Pats.). Patriots do recover to take 7-0 lead but clearly made the early mistake,

51: Could write a book on the horrors of the first half. 0-0 game when Blount fumbles in the midst of a promising drive, leading to Falcons TD. Offensive collapses into itself. 21-3 Falcons at halftime.

52: Eagles come out clicking on all cylinders. Patriots offense inexplicably tries trick play despite tremendous matchup advantage. Patriots offense inexplicably goes for it on 4th and 5 from 30 (huh?) then inexplicably settles for field goal on 4th and inches from 8 (huh?). Field goal shanked. Brandin Cooks declines automatic TD on outside run and tries to hurdle linebacker, then gets knocked out with concussion. Patriots trail 15-3 midway through second quarter. Brady later says Patriots never felt in control of the game and cites early miscues as major factor in loss (and he’s right.)

Giants punted on their first drive. Otherwise, it would have been 12-0 after the TD. That safety was the difference in the game, IMO.

Sometimes I wonder if the Pats are TOO calm at the start of a game. Like, they've been here before, so the butterflies aren't as strong, but they're facing a team that's going to come out with its hair absolutely on fire. So they have to weather a storm at the beginning, and it helps them in the 4th when the other team is gassed.

Could also be just a combination of coincidence in the first half of their run, and then a self fulfilling prophecy in the later ones because they're actively thinking, "Man, we REALLY need to start fast for once..."

Well, in SB 52...we SCORED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE FIRST QUARTER!!!!!! (BB/Brady era)

So, we have that going for us.....

I take these Super Bowls seriously because living in the south by default I take my football seriously. Celtics losing the 2010 finals doesn’t hurt nearly as bad as pats losing a super bowl. Oh and 52 twas a field goal. Still no TDS in the first quarter

If we started a regular season only scoring a combined 3 points in the first quarter over the first 8 games we’d rightfully be freaking out about what’s wrong.

Offense has been sluggish to start games. Sloppy and uncharacteristic mental mistakes.

Slight aside, but I checked out some stats.

Scoring by quarter this year
Patriots ......88....157....74....117
Opponents..80....81.....80.....84

Defense is pretty consistent but offense seems to get into gear in second and fourth quarters.

Rams:
Rams ......105....174....131....117
Opponents..84....112.....106.....82

Second quarter could be pretty eventful.

It absolutely happens and is absolutely frustrating.

Mostly posting though because the litany of miscues actually started to seem funny. I mean...

Brandin Cooks declines automatic TD on outside run and tries to hurdle linebacker, then gets knocked out with concussion.

...is hilarious. C’mon Cookson, give us an encore of that performance!

Patriots largest deficits: 9, 10, 25, 12
Patriots largest leads: 8, 7 , 0*, 1

*Atlanta SB wasn’t really a lead since game ended on TD

Trailed by more than one possession in each SB and never led by more than one possession. Would be nice to see them get a comfortable lead or at least avoid the opposite.

They like to keept things interesting

Always the better team, subliminally scared to lose. Other team is desperate to defeat the masters. This year's team is different, they have no fear.

I think we do not defer if we win the toss. Getting up 7-0 is too important.
I don't mind if Bill defers: the start-of-SB crowd noise can work to our advantage on defense, and I love receiving the kick-off at the start of the 3rd quarter.
