Moss IS a decoy

Here's how:

Suppose, in the early few games of the year, you consistently aim for (and currently, hit) Moss while in a 3TE power set. Later in the season (or, as we like to call it, when it matters) as an opposing DC, you get to pick and choose:

Respect the pass while we're in a power run set?
Or commit to the run?

While one of the best QBs at reading offenses and calling audibles is against you.

Having Moss in triple coverage later in the year while we're trying to run the ball is like 10 guys playing against 8 instead of 11 on 11.

And that works for me. Or, of course, you apparently you can just toss it ahead of the triple-covered Moss and grab 6 that way.

It's not either-or. It's pick-your-poison. The defense can align however it likes, but there will be SOME playcall that has an excellent chance of success.

This is the whole beauty of this offence. No matter what set we are in, Brady knows how to read coverages very well. If moss is open, he will get the ball. If (insert any other offensive skill player name here) is open, Brady will find him. The differance this year is all of our players run crisp clean routs with speed and they all have hands.

Heck, as some journalist pointed out, Welker had four catches in the first quarter for 66 yards--and then only four more for 25 yards the rest of the way.

The reason? The Chargers put a DB on him to shut him down (because Lord knows their LBs couldn't stop him ).

And, of course, a DB stuck on Welker is one that can't help stop Moss, or Watson, or Maroney, or Morris, or . . .

The Pats potential receivers currently are:

Moss, Gaffney, Stallworth, Washington, Welker, Evans, Faulk, Maroney, Morris, Thomas, Brady, and Watson. Yes, Vrabel has been out there as a TE in the past as well.

As exciting as it is to have such a solid offense, it reminds me of 1995 when we had an Allpro QB, devastating passing attack with T. Glenn, and of course a solid running game with the ever dependable Curtis Martin.
The difference is having a very consitent defense that we know will keep us in every game.

Fair enough. But Brady, the WRs 1-5, and every OL except Light are probably upgrades over that team. At RB, I'll confess to forgetting which of Meggett and Byars were here then, but as amazing as Meggett seemed in those days I'm guessing the whole RB situation winds up equating to at least a wash, given how good Faulk is at what he does. (Just how much had Martin accomplished by that point?)

I think that all far outweighs Coates and Armstrong, if Armstrong even was really better than Light. In particular:

QB + RBs -- better now
WRs + TEs -- better now, as amazing as Coates was
OL -- better now, inconsistent as they are

Moss is definitely a decoy already, sometimes. Watching the San Diego game again, I noticed that Benjamin Watson is a big beneficiary of the coverage on Moss. He got the ball more than he usually did last year. I also would like to hear more about the coverage Stallworth is seeing. Donte is pretty important already, and almost had big numbers vs. SD.
