In another thread I discussed how Patterson could be used in the role of the one cut route schemed to get open by play design which was a big part of Amendolas role here.

Over 5 years Amendola averaged
46/477 with 2.4 TDS.

If we prorate the games he played in, per game over a 16 game schedule (is overlook injured time) it works out to

50/538 and 2.7

In the post season his average game was
4.4/55 and just under half a td
Or over 16 games about
70/880/8

Obviously the step up in the post season is important although it partly represents the fact that we throw much more in the post. season.

Can Patterson replace that production?
Secondly if Dorsett bonds better with Brady with JE is out could Dorsett replace it instead?

Thoughts?

The regular season statistical numbers aren't as hard to replace as the clutch play third down, 2 minutes, and most importantly playoffs.
This is it right here. The truth is I don't know if CP can be a good replacement for Amendola until the Pats are on a game winning drive and he makes a clutch and/or difficult catch here and there. I suspect he may be a good goal line type of receiver as DA was too, as McDaniels put it "best trash and catch receiver" with his size and speed

To answer the question I say yes. Also noted in another thread, our coaching staff be creative in how they deploy his athleticism.

I like where Andy went with this but as other have posted, its the playoff performances that were really DAs value here.

Exactly.

Danny Amendola had a year in 2014 where he only had 200 yards in the regular season, then went on to become a huge performer in the playoffs that year.

Same thing in 2016. 200+ yds in the RS and 8 for 78 and a TD in the SB.

Not to mention the PRs and KRs....

No...I don’t think Patterson can be counted on end of game two minute drills. Dola caught more clutch passes than any player I’ve ever seen. Very different players.

Corey “Playoff” Patterson!

Production wise yes.

Clutch wise ??? Wait and see but they may not need him to be as clutch.

Thinking out loud here. Patterson threatens defences differently with his size and speed than Amendola does so if he's attracting attention to prevent the big play it may benefit White, JE, Hogan, Gronk etc... more than Amendola's presence on the field did.

But damn Amendola was one clutch MFer.

Amendola was very smart, with terrific route running, superb toughness and great hands. He could line up at X, Y or Z and be effective

Patterson, to this point of his career, has shown that he's agile and fast. And has shaky hands, marginal route running ability and questionable toughness

Could Patterson put up some decent numbers? Sure - the Pats receiving group is paper thin. But he won't replace what Amendola gave Brady - a trusted, reliable, clutch target who had near perfect chemistry with the QB

Brandon Lloyd put up numbers better than Amendola in his one year with the team. Nobody in their right mind would take Lloyd over Amendola.

Chemistry, ability in the big games, ability to beat good defenders, ability to move around the formation....these are all things which are crucial for a Pats WR. Patterson hasn't shown to have any of those things and what he has shown with other teams makes it tough to project that type of success with the Pats

Agree about 'Dola. We can always hope about Patterson. There's really no knowing at this point.

I think fans will be pleasantly surprised by Patterson......I don't see him as a Dola replacement tho......I think he'll have more YAC than Danny.......

Though his stats aren’t great I see him more as a Cooks replacement, just bigger, just as fast and with good hands. I see him playing late into all these preseason just so McD can further familiarize him with the playbook and get him ready for the regular season.

To clarify I am not saying Patterson steps into Amendolas shoes, I am talking about replacing production and the fact that Patterson looks like a good fit in some of the roles Amendola was used in.

The numbers you're providing don't mean squat really. Let me know when Patterson and/or Dorsett make some big catches in big situations, just like Amendola did many times.

No, since Patterson is an entirely different player than Amendola is. Edelman fills in for last year's Amendola role. We need to be looking it who can fill the Cooks role if we're looking to mirror last year's offense. In that case, we're looking at Phillip Dorsett to fill in for Cooks. Patterson is a different type of player than anyone we had last year - but that doesn't mean he'll be awesome.

One of the things I think that gets overlooked when you just throw out stats is other skills a player brings to the table. As clutch as Danny was I think the hardest thing to replace is going to be what a great blocker he was. Yeah he may have only had 3 or 400 regular season yards but there were so many times where Eldeman was able to squeeze by a guy Amendola was walling off for that critical extra yard. Can Patterson do it? Maybe but I haven’t seen it yet. Actually it’s dorsett that I think is going to be the closest replacement. Kinda similar in that his numbers don’t excite you but he is on the field so much he must be doing something right.

Patterson will be lucky if he gets 20 targets all season that aren't sideways passes
