FDA Approves First Blood Test to Detect Concussion

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 14, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- The first blood test to help diagnose a concussion has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Known as the Banyan Brain Trauma Indicator, it could help reduce the need for CT scans and thus decrease radiation exposure to patients, according to the FDA.

The blood test checks for levels of specific proteins that have been released from the brain into the blood within 12 hours of a head injury. Test results can be available within three to four hours.

more good news for player safety and more bad news for the NFL.

unfortunately this isn't going to fly.

Blood tests mean that the league could double up and testing them from peds, which means players are going to decline this test

if they do decide to use this test, the NFLPA probably would demand as part of the next CBA that samples for concussion blood tests can be used for that purpose only. then any PED tests based on concussion blood samples would be declared invalid.

A medical professional or laboratory can not test blood taken for any purpose other than what is acknowledged in the release form signed by the patient. After the intended test is finished and validated, they are required to then dispose (burn) of the remaining sample. You don't need a contract with your employer to have this legal right. Only a court order can remove it. If the NFL did what you are suggesting, every individual involved in the decision and that knowingly cooperated with its execution would be committing a crime.

Roger Goodell says they are very supportive of this and says there is no time table on when they intend to use this research and they want to “get this one right.”

My hometown has developed an interesting device as well, the Q-Collar.

"This compression collar gently presses on the jugular vein to increase blood volume around the brain, which creates a sort of extra impact-absorber during collisions."

This is great news not only for the NFL players but also athletes throughout youth sports. Any time a kid has a headache after any kind of collision, it's treated as a concussion. Often, the headache is caused by an injury to the tissue of the neck. This leads many athletes to hide their headaches so they can continue to play. With this test, there will be a definite way to distinguish and properly treat concussions as well as properly treat trauma to the neck tissue.

For the integrity of the league.
