Do you think the players, his close friends, didn’t notice that and take it into account?

Pretty hard to just block that from your mind, that one of your best players will be benched in the Super Bowl, for no apparent reason, which was a completely switch up of the weeklong installed game-plan.

I am sorry but if any player was distracted because Malcolm Butler didnt get to play and cried during the national anthem that player should be cut or traded. It is the NFL and you are a professional football player.. you are supposed to do your job.

If you work on a project with your office team and one of the guys who was supposed to do a part of the presentation, one that’s been prepared over and over for two weeks, is told for no reason to stay home, you’re going to be pretty rattled when Fred from accounting is thrown into the mix in his place and has no idea what to do.

And no matter how “average” you may think Butler was, that “average” was miles better than Bademosi and Richards, two players who should see strictly Special Teams snaps and nothing more during ANY football game, let alone during the goddamn Super Bowl.

The fact that it was the other way around is appaling and the reason fans are furious.

Sorry, but if there was one thing that we all learned from both DYJ documentaries it is that this team rarely gets borderline overprepared. Butler was the replacement CB in 2014 and when Arrington got benched stepped in and did his job not because he was this amazing talent but because of practice and how well prepared he was.

The whole notion of Butler being benched rattling the team into forgetting to play proper technique, misjudging deep passes or missing tackles is silly. Tackling was one of the strongest traits of Bademosi when he played instead of Gilmore early this year. It is just fitting in terms of how bad execution in the entire game was on defense that he missed such a crucial tackle on 3rd & 6.

The difference in this game was purely execution. The Eagles made some tough catches in the endzone that could have gone either way while we didnt play sound fundamental football.

I suspect it’ll come out today. But if they thought Rowe and Bademosi and upping Richards’ snaps gave them a better chance of winning the game than Butler did, then I honestly have to question Belichick’s mental faculties here. That said, I think it’s much more likely he did something to piss Belichick off. And if that’s the case, then Belichick is directly responsible for costing this team, and Brady especially, his sixth.

How is it a terrible counter argument ? So you are saying that the team that for considerably more than a decade has proudly said next men up didnt properly prepare the substitute players with two weeks to spare until a SB ?

Point is that whatever happened to Butler doesnt excuse shoddy execution from other professional football players. We are not talking blown coverages here but simply bad execution. I never said I was happy about Butler being benched. The reality is that the decision was made for whatever reason and the team needed to move on the same way they would have had to if Butler was suddenly not available for whatever other reason.

Not going to read 17 pages of threads, so not sure what was said prior to this thread.. my take.

Foles played out of his mind, his throws were right on and could not believe he completed some of those passes. Could not believe his accuracy..

Have said all season that Butler was not playing well, some times they disguised it well other times not so much.. saw a lot of the back of #21's jersey as he was trying to run down an Offensive player.

Thought Rowe had a better season, but not so last night..

I think the RPO worried the Pats more than it should have and impacted their pass rush.

But I do think that despite his bad season Butler was a better choice than Bademosi or Jordan Richards..

What I do know is this. Malcolm must have done something real bad.

If you watched all year and though Butler is our best corner then you have some kind of problem. Because he below average since Thanksgiving. People where whining about him since then all of the time and now suddenly he would have been a saviour and the convenient excuse. Brilliant.

Even if he wasnt playing lights out, the decision to bench him and let the other guy knows he is starting about 5 minutes before the kickoff is horrible. Just as nobody could figure out why is Gilmore on Smith while Rowe is being torched by Jeffery. You dont mess with the defensive scheme like that in a crucial moment and expect everyone to walk around with a smile on their face.
Butler is good #2 CB with steady tackling, Bademosi is primarily special teams player that can be serviceable but not in the SB. Richards is a clear step down from Bademosi. And you think leaving Butler out made no difference whatsoever?

I’m not making a goddamn argument. I’m telling you the facts of the situation at hand.

The facts are, specifically from the mouthes of the players, that Butler was in the gameplan, and there was no specific reason for his exclusion.

Unless Butler did something horrible, which clearly he didn’t since he dressed and played on STs, there’s no reason for him NOT to play on a defense that gave up 41 points, 22 at halftime which was the most the team gave up all season long.

Stop defending this. You’re in a no win scenario. The Pats lost and not playing Butler had so much to do with it.
