Interesting nugget from Mike Lombardi quoted by Jim Murray on 98.5. If a Pats player extends arm at goal line it's an automatic benching. Thinking back, I can't recall ever seeing a Patriot do this.

It definitely makes sense (with the exception of fourth down). We've seen it come back to haunt other teams.

I think Brady did it on a QB sneak where he jumped over the line. I want to say it was against Baltimore, but not sure. I may be hallucinating.

Chris

He paid for that one though. Ray Lewis slammed him in the back.

Yes, but his technique was to reach out with the ball and then pull it back, not to reach out and have it stay extended.

In-game decisions of players are important part of situational football . Its not incidental that Patriots under BB have the fewest situational mistakes or miscommunications and the best situational awareness. And its probably not even close. At the end that was the key difference between the two teams on Sunday.

This is from Lombardi yesterday:

And this is from BB's presser:

Well, it was a similar ending to the Seattle game. But, again, the difference in that game was they had to score a touchdown. They were down by four, and so this one a field goal changed it, which again, highlights the importance of the two-point play. Had we not hit that two-point play, then they would have just kneeled on the ball and kicked a field goal at the end. Again, there were so many big plays in that game as you go back through the fourth quarter of the game and really every play is a huge play. The difference in any of those plays in the fourth quarter, maybe call it from the second half of the fourth quarter on - the last seven, eight minutes - a change in any one of those plays could have affected the outcome of the game. So, that just to me showed how competitive the game was and how critical every single little thing is - each play, each player, each call, each situation. But, it was a great football game. As I said, we were fortunate to make one play more than they did to win it, but it was a very highly competitive game against a good football team, and I think the message for us is just every play's important and every situation's important. You've just got to be prepared for all of them. You never know which ones are going to come up, but being able to execute under pressure when they do takes the other 59 minutes and 30 seconds or whatever - not saying it's meaningless - but it takes all those plays out of the game and now it just comes down to one play or one situation or one short period of time, a few seconds, and that determines the outcome of the game. Situational football is so critical at this time of year, and fortunately we were able to make the plays we needed to make yesterday.

Once it breaks the plane - the play is over - TD
Yes, but the risk of extending it is that they will knock it out before you break then plane. Thus you extend it not at all or as briefly as possible. If it turns out that you didn't extend it far enough, then you live to try again.

Amendola dove for the pylon against Miami last week but was out of bounds and couldnt reach it. Cant remember which quarter it was but he was trying to reach the pylon on the right side of the field and just couldnt turn the corner fast enough.

I actually remember a play where I was exasperated with White for not doing this at the corner of the goal line. Now it makes sense.

But once he crossed the plane, it's a TD even if swatted out.

BB's rule is to prevent losing the ball before crossing the plane a la Carr last night or on avoiding a nullified catch a la James. Yet Brady stretched it out before crossing the plane. I think it shows that there are exceptions to BB's rule.

The exceptions are 4th downs or 2pt attempts (i.e. plays where it wouldnt matter). And Brady outstretched against the Ravens was on 4th & 1.
