Chung next to earn more in 2017; Pats boost incentive bonuses to $1.7m

Chung has become the most underrated player on this team. And as deep as they are he's one of the few players they really don't have an adequate backup for. They are in good shape at safety but he's playing a hybrid safety/LB spot that they don't have a backup for.

And last season the Pats played 3 safeties more than any other team. All 3 are really starters but Harmon can do dmacs job decently. Like you said, they really don't have anyone else who can replace Chung. Despite that, this has to be the best secondary in the NFL,both in terms of talent and depth.

Can certainly share the Chung sentiment here . but don't sleep on Ebner, Damarius Travis, possibly even Jason Thompson..

It would seem that the #1 hole on this team is that we don't have a backup for Chung. In many positions, we have 2 backups in case of injury. Here, we have none, unless one believes that Richards will be the ONE this year. I see Belichick bringing a couple of strong safeties into camp, and/or trading for one.

Yeah the quality depth on this team is astounding on both O and D. I see just 3 spots that are a little thin on depth: behind chung, Hightower and interior ol. Richards can stop the run and hit, but hasn't shown any coverage ability. Plus chung is not young. He's still one of the best in the NFL (over past couple seasons), but they need to groom a replacement. That guy could be on the roster but I don't know who.

People have said Chung "slipped" last year but not sure I saw it. Pats D vs TEs last year was pretty good I think Chung was a big part of it.
He looked good and played tough all the way through the season... and deep into the playoffs. No noticeable drop-off, (unlike LG). As many have noted though, there's no depth behind him, and while he has been super durable, there is a fair amount of wear and tear on his tires. Is Ebner or Richards able to step in at SS if necessary? Both of them have looked lost in pass protection when given opportunities in the past. There's a big opportunity here for one of the undrafted rookies to back up Chung.

I love Chung. Guy is a great example for Bill to point to. High draft pick that had some struggles early on but worked his tail off and became really nice piece on some great teams.

Good for him

You don't have great secondaries, defenses and teams w/out guys like him.

Chung is one of those reason we go by IBWT.

I (we?) was ready for him to leave and scratching our heads when he came back. I am glad to be wrong and have loved watching his second act with the Patriots!

Meanwhile Danny Admendola is somewhere going I like money too.

Danny be like hey coach:

Chung's new incentives . from Reiss:
  • $200,000 if he plays 65 percent of the defensive snaps
  • $400,000 if he plays 75 percent of the defensive snaps
  • $500,000 if he plays 85 percent of the defensive snaps
  • $300,000 if he plays 80 percent of the defensive snaps and the Patriots win 13 games
  • $300,000 if he plays 80 percent of the defensive snaps and the Patriots are in the Super Bowl
For context, Chung played 77.6 percent of the defensive snaps in 2014, followed by 81 percent in 2015, and 96.5 percent last season.

From my couch did not see any Chung slippage last year, what I saw was a guy who played "smarter" than ever..

If he does what he is supposed to do, he becomes less obvious..
