Reiss:Similarities to 2010 a notable history lesson for team

Not that I am aware of. But he surely is guilty of something quite serious.

How about this.. Would Welker had been in any kind of dog house if he started his own magazine called the "WW Times" that made fun of the teams they beat? He didn't like Welker.

Doubt we will ever know what it was - but something about Welker rankled BB. Not on the field - Welker was a warrior. But something.

He had a couple of issues with him on the field too. When Julien was starting to return some kicks and Belichick made the joke to him about "job security" Welker said "He can have it".

A lot of people saying 2010 team was not good in this thread. That team absolutely choked and should have easily at least made it to the Super Bowl. It was a total choke job and it is a good lesson for this team to think about as much as any other lesson.

It's also a fact they also weren't quite as good as their record indicated. Brady singlehandedly took them to 14-2. If he had an off game - and he did - then that was trouble. That was the team that got absolutely punked and embarrassed in Cleveland and would have probably been beaten at home by Matt Flynn if Dan Connolly of all people didn't have a 70 yard kickoff return.

If they get beat in the playoffs this year I know for a fact it won't be because the 2010 team lost to the Jets.

Wasn't that when Edelman returned a preseason punt for a TD and BB jokingly asked Welker if he knew who Wally Pipp was ( after presumably Ernie in the headset answered BB's question " who did Lou Gehrig replace")...??

2010's defense was pure garbage masked by turnovers. This defense doesn't need to rely on turnovers to get stops. Big difference.
True but at the same time, lack of turnovers was a big issue around the seattle game and they are a big part of our defense this yr. Denver was moving the ball easily on us this yr until the turnover in the red zone. Miami was moving easily until the turnover in the red zone. Either of those two drives go for a TD, its a different game

Yeah but did you expect them to not win the SB after they went 14-2 and had HFA ?

NFL uploaded the game on youtube a while ago

Yeah, and in the second half the Broncos went three-and-out five straight possessions. Miami punted on 6 of their 9 possessions. Fact is, in the 16 games they played, the only time the opponent was able to consistently move down the field was Seattle. All others had significant stretches in the game where they couldn't move the ball at all.

The Patriots beat Miami by 3 TD's and Denver by almost 2 TD's...they might have been different games, but they're both still wins

I felt good about their chances but if Brady had an off day then there were a lot of flaws to exploit. This years team has flaws too but I don't get that same sense with them.

That was not an all time great Patriot team and they certainly did not dominate the league like many are saying.

I thought the 45-3 game was an aberration and should not have been the expectation for the Jets game. People forget the Jets did beat the Pats earlier that year. And if they beat the Colts in Indy there was no reason why they couldn't do the same in Foxboro.

Sure. But the turnovers were critical in those games and for those margins.

True but it also helps to play defense when you are up and playing from ahead.

I don't think people remember how good were those 2010 Pats in the regular season.

They won 7 games against opponents with winning record, which still stands as an NFL record. 6 of those wins were against teams that made the playoffs.

They beat the #1 scoring defense on the road (Steelers), #2 and SB Champs (Packers), #3 (Ravens), #4 (Bears, on the road), split with #6 scoring defense (Jets), and also beat #1 total defense on the road (Chargers).

All of this while making a record for less turnovers in a season.

So yeah, 2010 Pats will not go down as one of the great teams of all-time, but that doesn't mean they were just another team in the regular season.

Jets loss in the playoffs was a total choke.

I will trust Belichick in preparing the players for the game, and not underestimating whoever comes into Gillette. Preparation for the next game is typically a strong suit for Belichick and the Patriots, unless they have one of those "Let's just lose the game for fun!" days (Last season against Miami, Philadelphia, that 2012 49ers game), but those are rare anyways.

2010's defense is also not comparable to this year's defense. Butler, Ryan, Rowe with McCourty and Chung at safeties are much better than what we had in 2010 (wasn't that the year where we had James Sanders, Brandon Merriweather and a bad Patrick Chung at safety...)

A lot of revisionist history here. That 2010 team was by far the best team in the NFL that season. The final four teams of the postseason that year, the patriots managed to go 4-1 against them during the regular season. They dominated the New York jets 45-3, dismantled the bears 36-7 in Chicago, and trounced the big bad steelers 39-26 in Pittsburgh. They also defeated Green Bay. That postseason was a choke job, epic choke.

With that said, 2016 is an entirely different season and team. I have complete confidence in the 2016 team

To put it very simply, WE CAN RUN THE BALL!!! In 2010 Rex flooded the middle zones and had Revis take away our number 1.

Try dropping 8 in coverage now and we'll run right over you. We also have legit outside receivers who can take the top off of any D who decides to try to force Brady outside.

I'm more excited about this offence then any since 2007, not in terms of talent, but in terms of how multiple we can be. We have a bruising running game, we have shifty backs for the passing game, we got Edelman and Bennett for the short inside attack, we got Mitchell, Hogan, and now Floyd who can stretch the D on the outside. D coordinators will lose a lot of sleep facing this O.

Yeah I can remember hating first and goal from the 5 yard line. Not saying it was accurate but from my 2010 fan perspective I felt more comfortable with them on the 15 or 20 yard line with the ability to use their passing game against a defense that had to cover more space.

This year is much different in so many ways with the three phase running attack they now have.

No they weren't.

The game vs the NYJ proved it.

If they played BAL the same thing would have happened.

3rd down D was last in the NFL and was not stout vs the run. They lived and died by the TO all year and needed to score more than 30 to win and when that didn't happen, the game was tight.

With that said, the 2016 blows the 2010 team out of the water on every level.

Stop being in denial. We went 4-1 against the final four teams during the regular season. We beat blew out NFC finalist Chicago 36-7 on the road, afc champions Pittsburgh 39-26 in Pittsburgh, and afc finalist New York 45-3 at home. We also beat the Super Bowl champion packers 31-28 and those Baltimore Ravens you felt inclined to mention.

14-2. 6-1 record against playoff opponents, 4-1 record against afc/NFC championship opponents, 2-0 against Super Bowl representatives.
