OT: ESPN losing $75 million on the Texans/Raiders game

I cannot for the life of me understand why ESPN pays so much money for the NFL like they do.

Not that I'm losing any sleep over it.

Many years ago, a friend of mine coined an expression for situations like ESPN's:
" My heart pumps Purple Panther Piss for you."

I will be losing sleep over this tonight... Not!!

Even with their numbers down an NFL game still attracts a large number of live viewers who belong to the optimal demo that advertisers will pay a premium to get them to see their entire 15 or 30 second dopey commercials. Further, an NFL game is a segue/gateway to attracting these viewers to other shows.
Live viewers + optimal demo + gateway to grow numbers of other shows = gold standard.

I suspect all networks that broadcast NFL games overall lose money on the direct broadcast of games (with individual super marquee matchups probably making a profit on the broadcast). It's the gateway to adding viewers to other shows that makes the massive contract cost of NFL games an overall moneymaker. Yet if this story of ESPN is true it is unlikely the gateway swag will cover the loss.

This used to be the argument, but it's simply not the case anymore. Espn is getting absolutely pummeled on all sides. Viewership all season has been way down, which has killed the lead in shows, and the demos are shifting older because younger people are cord cutters.

I think we will see an NFL apocalypse when the next tv deals are done and we see a significant market correction. There is just no way they sign on for another round of these rates when no one can afford it now.

It will be nice to see the NFL not only miss out on Goodell's promise of $25 billion a year, but actually see no growth, or a loss from where they are now.

Thank you, Commissioner Goodell.

Meanwhile, I often wonder what the real value is for the above. Is there anyone who is going to watch the Wild Card game this weekend really going to watch more ESPN that they weren't otherwise planning to watch? I'm mean, it's not like I am going to watch Saturday's game and all of a sudden decide I also want to watch NCAA Basketball on Monday night.

I hate when corporate bigwigs do what Goodell did. He gave a goal for almost 20 years in the future. It is an old management trick to give a goal so it fools people into thinking you are heading in the right direction, but then not be held accountable for failing to reach that goal because, by then, everyone will be retired.

Bob Iger CEO of Disney/ESPN probably had something to do with it.

NFL owners voted to allow the Rams franchise to move to Inglewood, rejecting a rival plan backed by Iger to build a stadium for the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders in Carson.

When Iger, 64, was named non-executive chairman of Carson Holdings, the joint venture of the Chargers and Raiders, it was considered a boost to the teams’ effort. At the time of his November appointment, the project put forward by billionaire Rams owner Stan Kroenke was seen as the favorite.

Iger, who was given an option to buy a minority stake in either the Chargers or the Raiders, was touted for his expertise in entertainment, marketing and development.

However, sports business insiders said the deck was stacked against Iger at the Jan. 12 NFL owners meeting in Houston. In the weeks leading up to the vote, a consensus among owners was coalescing around an alternative that involved pairing the Rams with the Chargers in Inglewood.

Didn't they get Texans-Chiefs last year and Ryan Lindley-7-8-1 Panthers the year before? hahahaha

Being the paid shills for Roger the Dodger isn't as lucrative as it used to be. ESPN has been bending over for the NFL for decades and the NFL keeps on screwing them over.

Wow, you would think being Goodell's cheerleader would give them something. haha, serves them right
They should have paid attention to how that turned out for Bob Kraft...
