The trade deadline has passed with us adding only Van Noy and Traylor (both needed since Belichick dumped Collins and Derby). We might upgrade Traylor when possible. However, he is what we need: a blocking TE.
====================
It seems like the time to make a mid-level extension or two for 2017: Branch, Cannon and Long come to mind.

Long is on the downside of his career, I would prefer to go after a younger more athletic pass rusher for next year. No to resigning long. I think flowers is a future starter 10 sack guy + good at run stopping, we need just one more just like him. flowers isn't ready yet, he's still green. Next year lets go after A young athletic edge guy who can put pressure on the QB and win one on one battles.

Long is on pace for just 2 sacks this year, no forced fumbles, and not sure about QB hurries tackles for loss or hits. But when I watch him play, I hardly see him making game changing plays or winning one on one battles. No thank you to next year.

really, Branch, cannon and long are the people who come to mind?

I know right? I was thinking Hightower, Bennett, and Butler. I'm sick of seeing all our defensive stars go elsewhere.

You guys do this every year. And every year Belichick fails to extend top players in mid-season. IMHO, now is the time to extend mid-level players.

And I guess I disagree with your general position that our best stars go elsewhere. Apparently you think that the team doesn't do a good job in making decisions with regard to cap management.

I never said offensive stars, I said specifically our best defensive stars go elsewhere, which is true lately. Talib, Revis, Jones, Collins...all pro bowlers who are gone. Other than Revis, the others are still young and in there prime playing at a high level.

We are capable of paying. We gave mccourty a record guaranteed contract for a safety.

It would seem as though we've been claiming that "it's the right time" for some extensions for quite awhile now. Belichick has not agreed with us, although perhaps the bye week changes that a bit?

I like your list and agree with the players, but only at the right price of course. I don't have an issue with extending Cannon, considering the fact that Solder will be entering his last year, Vollmer may never play another down in NE, and Waddle is exactly what many of us thought he was.

I'm full go with both Branch and Long.

Regarding Butler--How often do teams part with 1st rounders for RFAs? Are there any recent examples lately?

It would seem as though they'll have plenty of UFAs between now and March to try and deal with, without throwing in the added headache of attempting to determine Butler's current value.

If both sides can reach a fair deal that is beneficial to both player and team, then I'd be all for it; otherwise, I'd let next season play out.

I still can't believe there was a thread where posters were arguing with me that Chris Long has played better this year than Chandler Jones. It's not even close.
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised that there are some comparing Long to Jones, but there are certain traits that cannot be measured solely with statistics.

Chris Long is a very solid veteran signing, much like we've seen before. He's also better at setting the edge vs. the run. He provides great value, experience, dependability, and locker room leadership. More importantly, he's not extremely expensive.

Belichick was never going to pay Jones market value, especially not with maturity/character concerns and on the field limitations. How many times would he disappear halfway through the season? He is good, even very good at times, but he's certainly not worth what some other team will offer him. There's a reason why Belichick chose to put up with Richard Seymour's **** all those years, and that's because he was worth it as a 5 tech 3-4 end. The same does not apply with Jones.

Why? We already have the 2 best blocking TEs in the league.

Considering that we like to run a two TE set, it is good to have a backup blocking TE (in addition to Fleming).

Well the cap will go up and this team will have plenty of cap space. No excuses to sign some of these guys. I want butler and hightower to be here for awhile.

I thought long would try to cash in with the pats and have himself a good year. So far that hasn't happened.

Flowers did have a pair of sacks this past week. Wonder if he begins to pick up the pace here.
