Just a question I have not been able to get an answer to...

If a player goes on IR during the preseason or training camp and instead he is cut a few days later does that have any effect on the roster spots available or cap space for that same year?

Just asking because I think its a waste to keep Chad Scott still on this team...He is never going to be anything other than a IR player as it appears he simply can't take a hard hit anywhere and anymore at his age,Why keep him on IR or as a Patriot is he is annually done by late summer to early fall every year? - Has Chad actually completed even a half of a season on an active roster in the past 5 years?

I am sure IR has nothing to do with cap space or roster spot during this time but just wondering...However I do think we should cut him NOW instead of waiting,Thats if we can.

I do know we need to stop taking players named 'Chad' who have previously played on Pittsburgh's roster (Brown,Scott) - Neither have done much to help NE (add Rodney Bailey to that mix)
Actually the only former Steeler that I can remember that we picked up to do anything on this team in the past 20 years has been Vrabel.
It seems as if when Pittsburgh lets you go,stay away with rare exceptions like Vrabel

If he is cut...which I believe can not be done..there would be a greivance..I think it is that simple. Won't affect roster spots..but his money would be paid for the year. The only way a player can be released is if they are ready to play and wish to and agree with the team for an injury settlement. Usually happens with an injury in preseason...and a player better in a few weeks...two that came to mind Conaty and Stubblefield. Trying to cut injured players to reduce the cap is not allowed.

I think this may be Scott's last year of his contract so he would be a FA.

Apparently u missed last year..but that is OK.

I think that is it or close to it.

He didn't take a hard hit, actually. It was a non-contact injury in which he can down awkwardly. He is actually the hardest hitting of our CBs. The thing we lose most without Scott is run support. Not that his loss is devastating or anything, but his injury had nothing to do with his being able to hit or take a hit.

There is a process to cut an IR player. It's called an 'injury settlement' wherein the club pays the player an agreed upon amount and the player is off the team. The $ counts against the cap as well as any pre-existing 'dead money'.

I've wondered about compensation for IR'd players as well.

For simplicity, let's say a player has a $16 contract ($1 per game).

If he goes on IR before week 1, does he only get the settlement amount in his contract?

If he goes on IR after week 1, he gets $1 plus the settlement amount?

Same thing through week 17?

Feel free to provide a different example that illustrates the point better if # of games played is not directly involved.
