Dropped balls.....

many people have complained about the 2 drops that Caldwell had against the Colts and claim that those, by themselves, cost us the game. Well, I was doing some reasearch and found something very startling about one of our newest receivers. Donte' Stallworth. Over the last 4 years, Stallworth has the following stats:
2003 - 55 Targets - 25 receptions - 3 drops - 45.5% caught
2004 - 106 targets - 58 receptions - 5 drops - 54.7 % caught
2005 - 129 targets - 70 receptions - 11 drops - 54.3% caught
2006 - 78 targets - 38 receptions - 4 drops - 48.7% caught.

Totals - 368 targets - 191 receptions -23 drops - 51.9% caught

Now, I got these stats from StatsINC. Drops are defined as passes that the receiver should have caught when it hit the players hands. Stallworth have such a high number of drops isn't a good thing. One can only hope that he is working on that, otherwise we will see a steady diet of Moss, Welker and either Caldwell or Gaffney in critical situations.

caldwell was WIDE OPEN. it was an easy pass and catch

regardless of what they call dropped passes..i've seen chad johnson on that list of most dropped passes and they arent just gimmes

Every few games, the guy drops one. Is that bad? I don't know.

Caldwell had a solid year but he choked - of course it would have been nice if Brady had seen him earlier on the blown coverage. There's a reason the Colts dumped Vanderjagt, at the time, maybe still, the all time FG% leader. Unfortuanately, Caldwell Vanderjagted the AFCCG.

Actually, no, they aren't. According to Stats, they count dropped balls as being CATCHABLE Balls that the receiver should handle. NOT the extremes that you mentioned. That is why Caldwell is only listed as having 1 dropped ball during the regular season, yet I can remember him getting his hand on a couple of over-thrown ones and not coming up with them.

should have caught are balls he touched. like i said..diving..high balls. theres a thing for WRs..if the ball hits your hands..no matter what, you have to catch it

Stallworth has been known throughout his career for having sub-par hands. It's something you have to live with knowing he can get open deep and take a short pass a long way.

Nobody on the team has worse hands than Ben Watson. How many did that guy drop?

I look at that drop to be as much Tom's fault as Reche's. Reche was standing there acutally looking to get he ball "on the move",being lead. Tom did not see him. When he finally did see him, Reche had to catch the ball standing still because it was thrown slightly behind him.

Should the ball have been caught? Yes! But people are making too much of this. It is harder for a WR to catch a ball standing still than on the move, being lead. Just one of those plays that both Tom and Reche would like to have back.

Well, Stallworth played in just 55 games in that 4 year period.

Torry Holt : 661 Targets - 406 receptions - 22 drops - 61.4% caught (62 games)
Chad Johnson : 631 targets - 369 receptions - 31 drops - 58.5% caught (64 games)
Marvin Harrison: 561 targets - 357 receptions - 18 drops - 63.6% caught (62 games)
Anquan Bolding: 592 targets - 342 receptions - 57.7% caught - 24 drops (56 games)
Terry Glenn: 361 targets - 208 receptions - 13 drops - 57.6% caught - 13 drops. (53 games)


So, no, Stallworths numbers aren't great at all when it comes to drops.

The conclusion is that Stallworth caught barely52% of the balls thrown to him and has 23 clear drops so looking to him in critical situations may not be a great idea if he doesn't improve. The excuse of not having a good QB won't be there for him.

Javon Walker was at 55% last season, Reggie Brown at 51%, Boldin at 55%, Burress 52%, Driver 53%, M. Muhammad 51%, Tory Holt 52%, Deion Branch 52%, S. Moss 54%. In 2005, Terry Glenn was at 53%, Lee Evans at 53%, Burress at 46%, Isaac Bruce at 51%, Randal-El at 50%. So while Stallworth's hands are not ideal, he has been a capable receiver, with a positive overall influence on his team's offense, for several years in a row. Factoring in maturity, commitment to physical fitness, and an improved QB, he has every opportunity to fulfill his raw potential with the Pats.

i dont recall hearing anything about Stallworth in camp really..where did u hear that?

certainly not the best hands but i just dont remember hearing anything negative. Think about it though..in '05 his QB was Brooks..TERRIBLE. drop the 11 passes from '05..i doubt half were his mistakes because Brooks is just terrible.

had it been Brees in '05..he probably wouldnt have nearly as much

Stall isnt known for his hands..hes not mr. reliable like Troy but hes known for his speed and deep game and YAC

im pretty sure the only dropped passes i heard of were KELLY WASHINGTON. maybe u got it mixed up, maybe i missed something. who knows.
