Superior Patriots TV Viewing: How To Mute Phil Simms: A Simple Guide

I know, especially from recent posts on the subject, that many on this board really dislike, the national TV announcers.

Phil Simms has been mentioned unfavorably. I, for one, can't stand ~90% of what he says. He detracts from the broadcast.

The answer for me is simple. Watch the game without him! Here is the definitive step by step guide:


Step #1: Your default position is muted audio. This is important, since mostly what is on screen is ads and network promos.

Step #2: As you prepare for the next play, locate your remote (mine is usually on the right arm of my recliner.)

Step #3: Wait for the standard sideline view, and then watch as it slowly zooms in. Steady ... wait for it ... wait for it ...

Step #4: DE-MUTE !! If you've timed it right, you are hearing Jim Nance. If not, Phil is still blabbing, but fear not, Nance is about to speak.

Step #5: Nance will announce the next play in his usual competent way, telling us who, what, where, down and distance.

Step #6: As soon as he pauses, Phil is about to talk. PRESS THE MUTE !!!



I cannot tell you how much more enjoyable the game is when using this technique.

Try it. I think you'll like it. This will allow you piece of mind. You may find yourself engaged in the game even more than you thought possible.

Here is another thing you could do. If you have a surround sound system is just unplug your center speakers and just use your perimeter speakers. You would get all of the stadium sounds and none of the BS commentary. I think one of the posters hear suggested this before the Super Bowl last year. I haven't had a chance to try this myself yet.

Sims used to be good. Typical for broadcasters who have been around a long time to become lazy, mail it in and believe that people are tuning in to listen to them and not watch the game.

Is it really that hard to hire analysts who aren't idiots? I get that part of the reason fans hate them is because we think they are against our team but another reason (and this is correctable) is that they say stupid things. Example Fouts this Sunday -- Edelman dropped the ball but even if he'd caught it, would have been incomplete?

That's true. I used to really like Simms and Nantz circa 2006 and earlier.

Same in my house. I had this college roommate who used to watch this tv show with this guy and two robots commentating and making fun of these crappy B-movies. Kinda like that.

I just block out the noise of them or the announcers when needed. And neither shut-up!

Thats it!! He laughed his ass off. It was freshman year. I had no choice but to deal with it.

I really don't listen to the announcers. 90% of what they say is useless.

That's fine and all, but my problem is Nantz more than Simms.

He's not Dan Dierdorf but Simms is losing it. He has the mind of a 75 year old who is driving a car in Florida with that "eventual left turn" blinker flashing....it's very sad.

Simms constantly says, "Let's watch what he's saying." Or worse, "Let's listen to what he's doing."

Then every so often he'll not be able to finish a....
