One of the reasons why I posted this is because I saw Mark Brunell listed at #12.

In 2010, "he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after he claimed $25 million in debt. During his career he collected more than $50 million."

Isn't this one of the guys who is very vocal against Tom Brady?

FYI: Ray Rice is listed at #1

Yes and he will soon cry about being on this list.

The flip side was an offensive lineman (Jaguars?) profiled by SI several years ago IIRC. He lived in a nice house but only furnished three rooms ( kitchen, bedroom, living room) saying "I don't know how long my career will last so I'm saving everything and paid the house off totally." He had humble beginnings and was a 3rd or 4th round pick and wanted to use his NFL career as a basis for a secure future. He likely didn't earn 1/10 of these guys but will be more secure....

There's a nice 30x30 documentary, Broke, I'd recommend.

It's a ESPN product though.

What I love most about him: he never, ever played with an underinflated ball, because he would have known the difference. The Ideal Gas Law, and the entire physical universe, was essentially short circuited whenever Mark Brunell was playing in a game in cold weather.

He had a sound financial upbringing, from the sounds of it. A lot of these guys come from dirt poor upbringings in the hood with little to no financial knowledge and upbringing from parent figure(s). It's understandable how they go completely hood rich and blow their money on a new home for their mother and grandmother and shoes and cars. A lot of times, that is literally their first experience with a lot of money and they probably believe it will last forever.

Actually he didn't. I wish I could find the link but he grew up dirt poor but he had an agent who drilled into him the big picture and unlike many ( see HBO's Ballers for a fictional example) he "got it".. Like Bob Woolf when he represented all those Celtics and essentially gave them an allowance and invested for them allowing them to retire with their financial futures very secure.....

Okay, I am finding it hard to get past the cross-eyed doofus pic of Dan Marino, LOL.

The Ravens seemed to be well represented on that list.

No Hernandez?

Some players take a different route:

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/06/rob-gronkowski-says-he-hasnt-spent-one-dime-of-his-nfl-salary
“To this day, I still haven’t touched one dime of my signing bonus or NFL contract money. I live off my marketing money and haven’t blown it on any big-money expensive cars, expensive jewelry or tattoos and still wear my favorite pair of jeans from high school… I don’t hurt anyone (except Gord with the occasional kick to the groin), I don’t do drugs, I don’t drive drunk, I don’t break the law… I’m a 23-year-old guy just looking to have a fun time.”

Yep. Larry Bird's agent was Bob Woolf. Bird was already the cheapest bastard on the planet so he was totally on board with the philosophy. With that said, Larry grew up not knowing where his next meal was coming from and using newspaper to cover the holes in his shoes so that was totally understandable.

Hehe I love that guy

The dink in me wants to dig up that old thread where people were saying to cut or trade him, and using hernandez as an example of a mature player who had his priorities in order lol

I can't help but remember that thread and keep bringing it up because it's a reminder that none of us know **** when it comes to players and their lives outside of what we see on Sunday and hear from media during the week

I still vividly remember a couple specific posters who I was arguing with while defending Gronk, and none of them have admitted to being wrong
