Food for thought. Here are the preseason stats from the Pats' backup QBs' rookie seasons over the last decade (I'm ignoring third- and fourth-stringers):

Matt Cassel [2006*]: 49/82(!), 680 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 5 sacks
Kevin O'Connell: 15/32, 140 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 2 sacks
Brian Hoyer: 29/44, 354 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 4 sacks
Ryan Mallett: 36/63, 357 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 6** sacks

Jimmy Garoppolo: 24/37, 334 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT, 0 sacks

I don't think it's unreasonable at all to say that, at this point, Garoppolo appears to be ahead of all the other rookie QBs the Pats have had in the last decade.

*NFL.com does not have preseason stats from 2005.
**5 of these came against the NYG, so I'm thinking it's not entirely on Mallett.

I have said this before and I will say it again, Garoppolo is the the best rookie QB this team has had in the preseason since Bledsoe. Brady didn't get a heck of a lot of playing time his rookie season with the fact they had four QBs on the roster.

Attention for Bold prediction: If he keeps progressing like we imagine he would, i think we may have find Brady's Heir.

I am hugely impressed by his performances, he doesn't look like a rookie, much less like a "Inferior competition" Rookie from E. Illinois. I know it's only his first preseason, but, still he appears to have the talent and we have the coaching staff to make the best out of him. He's definitely the most interesting Rookie QB we've had in years

Jimmy Garoppolo expected to start Thurs vs. Giants and play majority, if not all, of game, Bill Belichick confirmed through team spokesman.

I think BB agrees with me

129.8! That's pretty damn impressive. Even considering a lot of that came against future PE teaching assistants and fry cooks. The same can be said for most of the other guys with much lower rating.

This is Jimmy Garoppolo at his best, but what about at his worst? How
does he react after he gets picked, fumbles the ball or under never
ending blitz packages?

Like to see how he picks himself up and goes right back to QBing.

That's why it'll be a good test Thursday, the Giants' should be playing plenty of starters, while JG might not be working with even half of the starting offense.

I love overreactions to preseason games.

I don't see any overreaction here, and I certainly didn't bring any.

I'm just trying to point out that Garoppolo's preseason performance, so far, has been significantly better than any rookie QB the Pats have had recently.

It's not you @ctpatsfan77, more some posters moving to appoint JAG as the second coming. He's looked great in the preseason but it's exactly that, the preseason.

What about the legend of Tyms?
