Jesus had a wife

She didn't look like anything because she didn't exist.

Even the author of paper says that this isn't evidence that Jesus had a wife.

"King has never argued that the fragment is evidence that Jesus was actually married. It would have been composed much later than the gospels of the New Testament, which are regarded as the earliest and most reliable sources on the historical Jesus and which are silent on that question."

New tests show no evidence of forgery in ?Gospel of Jesus?s Wife? - Metro - The Boston Globe

The fact remains that most scholars still think the fragment is fake.

"At the beginning of February 2014, the editors of the Harvard Theological Review allowed me (Leo Depuydt, Brown University professor) to view all the other documents relevant to the Wife of Jesus Fragment that will appear in the April 2014 issue of the journal. I am grateful to them for this opportunity.

I find nothing in these documents that could change in any way the fact that I am personally 100% certain that the Wife of Jesus Fragment is a forgery. I have otherwise never deemed ink or papyrus tests necessary or relevant in light of the evidence set forth below. I will make three brief observations, however."

Was Jesus Married? A Careful Look at the Real Evidence

The church is called the "Bride of Christ". It's a metaphor. Jesus used parables to reveal spiritual truths.

Exactly......"my wife" could have been referring to the church. As in....."my wife".... should be holy.

Well there's also the theory that Mary Magdalene was his wife and bore him three children, 2 boys and a girl called Justus, Joseph and Tamar. The theory is the RCC has always known this to be true but has suppressed the information. I'm not saying it's true but as conspiracy theories go this one wouldn't surprise me if it were true......especially the suppression part.

It makes no sense for a man during that time at his age not to have a wife. I just hope that Priests can get married now. Those guys are a bit creepy, perhaps they can bring less creepy people in as priests

"Excursus: Unmarried Jewish Men in the Time of Jesus

Two prominent Jewish writers from the first-century A.D., Philo and Josephus, mention that some Jewish men in the time of Jesus were single by choice. Philo, a contemporary of Jesus, was a Jewish philosopher who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, and who wrote many volumes in the first half of the century. Josephus was a Jewish historian who wrote near the end of the century. Both Philo and Josephus mention that the Essenes, a group of apocalyptic Jews who eagerly awaited God’s intervention in history, did not marry by choice. Here are excerpts from their writings:"

When all is said and done, there is a tendency to view what we consider as "married" today to what was considered married a very long time ago, "weddings" for poor folk was done with little fanfare... so such an incident could have occurred.

It is not as though Jesus marriage would have made the "society page"... would not surprise me that the RCC is suppressing evidence on this as well, as they do not want to deviate from the patriarchal message...

"If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife, so from my personal point of view, get an ugly woman to marry you.".. "If you wanna be happy" Jimmy Soul.

Coming from a guy who "worships" at the altar of the Burger King of Religions.

How exactly would a married Jesus deviate from a "patriachal" message? Peter, the first Pope, was married. Most of his Apostles were married. For the first thousand years in the church, Bishops and priests were allowed to marry. The Eastern Rites within the RCC still allow for married priests.

Now you deny that the Catholic Church is Partiarchal... interesting. The message is and has been controlled by men...

Why does anybody -- except some Christians, perhaps? -- care whether Jesus was married? Does it affect anything? or it just a matter of historical curiosity.

(btw, RI, what is the burger king of religions?)

There would have been nothing immoral with Jesus being married. That being said, as both God and man his vocation as redeemer of all mankind was best served by being single.

Also, as an aside....Mary, who was seen as the new Eve to Jesus' new Adam, was also married even though she was a perpetual virgin and upon the end of her earthly life was crowned Queen of heaven.

According to Darryl, a fellow "congregant" of his sees their religion (Unitarian Universalism) as the "Burger King" of religions because you can "have it your way". In other words, you can believe what you want to believe.

This is hilarious. First off, the Catholic Church did not exist by name or anything close to current structure for hundreds of years after Christ. If this was a conspiracy to suppress, then it was all believers who suppressed it, not some non-existent (at the time) church hierarchy. And why would a believer suppress it? Believers are seeking TRUTH... not to appoint some fraud as King of the World just because he's 'our guy'. We leave that method to the Democrats. LMAO!!!

So believers never tell lies or distort the truth to keep their power? Pedophile priest, Jimmy Swaggart, the WBC.......yep just a bunch of believers seeking truth. There's evidence to support that's exactly what happened but you just keep living with blinders on.

Doesn't this seem weird that a married woman was a perpetual virgin.

She wasn't. Jesus had half-brothers and sisters.

The Scriptures talk of Jesus having "brothers". The word used for "brothers" was the Greek word "Adelphos". Adelphos was used to describe brothers, cousins, and even kinsman. Given that Jesus gave his Mother to John at the crucification, it seems unlikely that he would have had brothers or sisters.
That being said, the most important evidence to establish Mary's perpetual virginity would have been the Early church fathers who belived in the Perpetual virginity of Mary.
Heck even Protestant reformers like Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin (in his biblical commentary) believe that Mary was a perpetual virgin.

Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.
Matthew 1:24–25

"2) A second objection to Mary's virginity arises from the use of the word heos in Matthew's gospel. "He (Joseph) had no relations with her at any time before (heos) she bore a son, whom he named Jesus" (Mt 1:25, NAB).
The Greek and the Semitic use of the word heos (until or before) does not imply anything about what happens after the time indicated. In this case, there is no necessary implication that Joseph and Mary had sexual contact or other children after Jesus."
