Does anyone know if there is a deadline to pull the franchise tag, or what the exact rules are again.. If there were posted before , sorry, but Im curious, with the excitement in Assante's interview, was wondering if this could be a sign a deal is on the horizon..

July 14, Saturday

* Any club designating a Franchise Player shall have until 4 pm EDT to sign the player to a multi-year contract or extension. After July 14 the player may sign only a one-year Player Contract with his Prior Club, and such Player Contract may not be extended until after the club’s last regular season game.

A team can pull the franchise tag at any time.

Quite simply, the player becomes an unrestricted/street free agent at that time.

Pats have until July 14 to sign him long term. And, furthermore, I believe more importantly at issue here is that they can remove the Franchise Tag at that time and be able to use it next year on another player. If they sign him long term after July 14, they can't use the tag until his contract runs out. So, in essence there is a July 14 deadline to get any long term deal ironed out.

After July 14, he is only playing for one year under the Tag salary. Then, they get to do it all over again next Mar 2. But, this time his "tag" salary goes up by 20%.
