The Senior Bowl Thread

C.J. Fiedorowicz TE Iowa

6055 262 10 5/8 32 1/4

Mon: A traditional tight end. Big, strong and dominant as a blocker. Easily turned opponents off the ball and opened huge holes for the running game. An offensive lineman in a tight ends body.
Senior Bowl: North Team Practice Page

From Dan Kadar at SBNation:

Other notables for the North squad on Monday were Ohio State offensive tackle Jack Mewhort, Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Justin Ellis and Louisville's Marcus Smith. Switching from defensive end to outside linebacker at the Senior Bowl, Smith looked natural in coverage. He was fluid in man situations during team drills when he covered Wisconsin tight end Jake Pedersen in the flat. He looked a little lost dropping in space, but Smith didn't look lost at linebacker.

Senior Bowl Day 1 practice report

That's one of the things that impressed me the most when I watched him in that I was surprised how fluid he looked on the few occasions he did drop into coverage. That, rather than his explosiveness in the pass rush, was why I went with the Collins comparison. Nice to see that confirmed.

I've seen a little bit of this guy and was fairly impressed, certainly by his size (big!) but looks like he can catch too. Much more interested now:

Surprisingly, the most impressive pass catching performance may have come from Coastal Carolina running back Lorenzo Taliaferro. I had not seen a minute of his play this season coming into today, and after he measured in at 6’0 3/8” and 231 pounds this morning, I wasn’t expecting much more than power running. But Taliaferro was out there separating from defenders and catching the ball out in front of his body, and he even made a diving catch near the sideline while keeping both feet in bounds. His apparent versatility has officially piqued my interest going forward.

this senior bowl is making me realize how many players i want Donald, Hageman, Smith, Van Noy, ASJ, Amaro, Robinson, Daquan Jones, Stanley Jean Baptiste, Caruan Reid hoping that we can trade Mallett for a 2nd rounder imagine a draft with Robinson then ASJ Donald and Smith and maybe with a trade up of our 4th and our two non comp 6ths get up to the 3rd and get Jean Baptiste i would be insanely excited

There are a ton of good players who should go on all 3 days, and you can't draft them all. For every one who rises, some will fall. There will be opportunities for a FO that has a clear and coherent plan and that is able to maneuver adroitly.

Senior Bowl gossip from Walter Football, FWIW:

-The Green Bay Packers have their defense as the priority of their offseason. It sounds as though Green Bay is more inclined to draft for defense early rather than offensive players like a new tight end or offensive line help. Sources with the Packers say they want to improve the speed and playmaking ability on their defense. Getting their defense more dynamic and faster is a top priority of their offseason according to sources.

The Packers are also interested in Stanford outside linebacker Trent Murphy. Green Bay has some edge rushers in Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, but both players have dealt with injuries. Murphy (6-5, 252) fits the mold as an edge rusher in their defense as he led the nation with 15 sacks last season. If Murphy falls to their second-round pick, that would be ideal for Green Bay.

- Green Bay isn't the only team that is scouting Murphy hard. Murphy is also on the radar for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers don't have a big need at the position, but with a plethora of picks, they could stand to get some pass rushing depth and that isn't a bad idea considering Aldon Smith's situation.

WalterFootball.com: 2014 Senior Bowl Rumor Mill

The Pats pick 29th and the 49ers 30th. GB picks at 21, which is probably the earliest Murphy might go as things currently stand, but there's a lot of time left for prospects to move up and down draft boards.

Pauline's South team practice report from Monday:

Aaron Colvin DB Oklahoma
5113 186 9 1/4 31

Colvin was consistently a half step late staying with opponents off line but was terrific from that point on. Technically very sound, he showed the ability to recover and made a lot of nice plays on the ball. Still, his hesitancy off the line is concerning.

Keith McGill DB Utah
6030 214 10 1/4 33

From the time he stepped on the stage this morning to be measured, McGill looked the part. Except for a somewhat stiff backpedal he was terrific in most all aspects. A move to safety could be in the offing.

Deandre Coleman DL California
6050 315 10 1/4 34

Terrific day for Coleman. Showed terrific power and surprising agility. Held the point of attack with ease but also showed the ease to beat opponent off the edge.

Daniel McCullers DL Tennessee
6067 348 10 5/8 35 5/8

It was ugly. McCullers was the biggest player on the field yet never made any plays. He looked lethargic in drills, shows little intensity and was easily blocked from the action by lesser opponents. On almost every snap.

Caraun Reid DL Princeton
6021 301 10 1/4 32 5/8

Quick, explosive and really worked hard. Three technique prospect that must do a better job getting off blocks.

Brent Urban DL Virginia
6066 298 9 7/8 33 5/8

Definitely had his moments. Looks the part and often played to it. At times a man amongst boys but other times look awfully ordinary due to his unpolished game and inconsistent techique.

Dee Ford LB Auburn
6021 243 10 32 3/4

Lined up exclusively at defensive end. Applauded numerous times by coaches for taking direction, playing with great pad level and competing. Quick and fast but easily handled at the point.

Kyle Van Noy LB BYU
6032 244 9 1/2 32

Did not make to many plays yet made no mental errors and constantly around the ball.

Adrian Hubbard LB Alabama
6057 255 9 1/8 33 7/8

Many question Hubbard’s body type yet I see a big, fluid athlete who easily moves about the field. Made one terrific play in coverage yet to be honest he really needs to start making more plays on the ball rather than arriving a half step late.

Bryan Stork OL Florida State
6034 306 10 1/8 31

I did not expect much from Stork but was very impressed with what I saw. Quick, explosive and fundamentally sound. Easily controlled bigger opponents and held his own.

Billy Turner OL North Dakota
6050 316 10 1/4 33 1/4

Struggled and had coaches screaming at him. Lined up at right tackle but never seemed to get his feet underneath him. Lacked balance, footwork and not a good start to the week

Travis Swanson OL Arkansas
6050 310 10 32 7/8

Solid practice from Swanson yet really showed no dominant trait to his game nor did he prove to be worth the rating some have given him.

Gabe Jackson OL Mississippi State
6033 339 9 7/8 33

Good day from Jackson. He’s very quick, explosive and strong at the point. Really did not show much stiffness in his game.

Joel Bitonio OL Nevada
6040 307 9 7/8 33

Terrific day for Bitonio. He’s a barrel-chested blocker who stays square and controlled everyone he faced. Not real fluid or athletic but efficient and strong.

Marcel Jensen TE Fresno State
6053 254 10 1/8 34 1/4

Hands down the best tight end on the North. Caught the ball very well, showing the ability to beat down linebackers. Held his own blocking.

Arthur Lynch TE Georgia
6044 258 10 1/8 31

Methodical and slow in his entire game yet efficient.

Jordan Matthews WR Vanderbilt
6025 209 10 1/2 32 5/8

Struggled catching the ball early in the day before righting the ship. Not horrible yet not a first round performance.

Cody Hoffman WR BYU
6037 218 9 7/8 33

Caught the ball well. Was impressed the way he fought for the reception, using his size as an advantage. Did not always do that on film.

Among others.

Senior Bowl: South Team Practice Page

From Mike Loyko at NEPatriotsDraft:

2. Aaron Donald isn’t messing around. He showcased ridiculous quickness off the ball and dominated Cyril Richardson on back to back plays. Donald’s quickness and hand usage put Richardson on his backside. Donald himself, referenced Geno Atkins as a player he models his game after. As he called it “an undersized, disruptive tackle”. Once the full pads go on look for Donald to separate himself even more. He’s my top guy here.

3. Princeton DT Caraun Reid plays with violence and bad intentions. During bag drills he was nearly ripping the bags apart with his violent and sudden strikes. I can tell you one thing, NFL scouts were impressed with A) How he weighed in and B) His movement skills in practice. It doesn’t hurt that he is the smartest kid in the room too.

5. It’s tough not to be impressed by Jordan Matthews work ethic. He runs everything to the endzone, shows up early to practice and stays late. He was also the most physically impressive player at the weigh-in. Probably a product of him working out with his uncle Jerry Rice.

6. Aaron Colvin was the best corner on the South squad and it wasn’t really close. He was balanced, patient, and quick when playing from the line of scrimmage and carried his coverage deep downfield. He found the ball nicely and broke up a few passes when matched up in man with Jordan Matthews. When playing off, he allowed a few receptions due to split second hesitation, but got himself in position to make a tackle. Fluid hips and mid-section, he helped himself today.

7. Dee Ford can explode off his first step and bend around the edge like none other I saw today. When he gets a jump off the ball he’s tough for the OL to get hands on with because he can bend the edge so well. He’s been knocked for lacking power and size, but he rag-dolled Vanderbilt OL Wesley Johnson and just slammed him to the ground. Ford weighed in at 6022/243 so the move to OLB has to happen.

9. Kyle Van Noy had a real strong practice in coverage. He’s instinctive and showed good hands on ability at the line of scrimmage. He shadowed TEs down the slot, followed the ball, and got his hands on a couple passes. Van Noy was a great interview and comes off as a talented, motivated, smart football player driven to be great. When pads go on, he could shine even brighter.

10. Notre Dame OL Zack Martin showed why he is the most talented lineman here. He’s just solid all-around. Doesn’t have the best measurables, doesn’t look particularly good going through reps, but no one can beat him. Martin’s future should be at OG where he has an All-Pro ceiling.

11. Chris Borland looks like Zach Thomas on the field. Even the way he sits in his stance prior to the snap looks like Thomas. It didn’t take him long to make an impact. His first 7 on 7 rep resulted in a pass break-up and later he intercepted Logan Thomas when he gunned a touch pass to Charles Sims. Borland is just under 6 feet tall, but I could care less about his size. He will make an impact in the NFL.

Other things that stood out today:

- The Billy Turner hype is real. He turned in a great performance taking on all comers. I ranked him in my top 30 Senior Bowlers and he’s already moved up that list.

- Down day for Marcel Jensen, Kareem Martin, all of the north QBs, and Daniel McCullers

- Arthur Lynch was the best TE that I saw today. Caught the ball well and separated from coverage at the top of his routes.

2014 Senior Bowl: Day One Practice Notes | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2014 NFL Draft

Its nice to see that I am not the only one extremely high on Zach Martin. I want to see Martin vs Donald. If Donald can steam roll him, it will put to rest my undersized concerns I have towards him. Also, I expect Jordan Matthews to suck, but kill it during the game(true gamer). I don't like hoffman but something about him reminds me of Dobson so he might be on our board.

something mysterious lurks in Mobile

Tony Pauline notes on the Tuesday practice for the North squad:

Deone Bucannon DB Washington State
6007, 216, 9 1/2, 31 3/4

Really struggled in drills showing little in the way of smoothness or fluidity. Saw little action in scrimmage. Have to wonder if you can place him over the slot receiver.

Pierre Desir DB Lindenwood
6011 195 9 1/4 32 3/4

Slightly better day. Seemed to get his feet underneath him.

Stanley Jean-Baptiste DB Nebraska
6023 215 8 1/2 32 3/8

Physically imposing defender who looked solid in drills.

Dontae Johnson DB North Carolina
6020 199 8 7/8 31 1/2

Tweaked his hamstring yesterday and on the sidelines most of the morning
Wed:

Will Clarke DL West Virginia
6061 271 9 1/2 33 3/8

Struggled in the sense he could not get off blocks and was easily knocked from his angle of attack.

Aaron Donald DL Pittsburgh
6007 288 9 7/8 31 3/4

Not as dominant as yesterday but still had a good day. Shows a lot of variety in his game beating opponents with power, quickness and technique.

Ra’Shede Hageman DL Minnesota
6060 318 9 5/8 33 3/4

Just like yesterday but to a much greater extent. Started the day slow and at times was controlled by lesser opponents. Later knocked both Brandon Linder and Tyler Larsen on their asses on separate plays. The skill is there but the consistency is not.

DaQuan Jones DL Penn State
6034 323 9 3/8 32 3/4

Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Has every feature you want in a potential starter for the next level yet rarely made plays when it counts.

Marcus Smith DL Louisville
6034 258 9 5/8 33 1/4

Saw most of his action at outside linebacker and held his own. Played within himself and looked very disciplined. Did not make many plays but at the same time did not look mentally slow or unsure of himself.

Chris Borland LB Wisconsin
5113 245 9 3/4 28 7/8

Another terrific day. Plays all out, explosive and outright dominant. Tremendous during blitz drills and could not be stopped.
Wed:

Trent Murphy LB Stanford
6053 252 10 7/8 33 1/8

Another good day for Murphy. Did not make as many plays on the ball but was constantly around the action.

Jordan Zumwalt LB UCLA
6040 231 8 1/2 31 18

Had a “WOW” sort of day. Dominant during blitz drills, showed a lot of skill in pursuit and held his own in coverage. Just a lot to like about his game.

Tyler Larsen OL Utah State
6034 317 9 3/8 30 1/2

Was beaten badly by Hageman on one down yet for the most part workmanlike and got the job done.
Wed:

Zack Martin OL Notre Dame
6041 305 9 3/4 32 1/4

Lined up at both tackle and guard. I was not overly impressed today but a number of scouts thought he was better this morning than one day ago. Definitely climbing the board.

Cyril Richardson OL Baylor
6044 343 9 3/4 33 7/8

Rebounded after yesterday’s disastrous showing. Strong and anchors at the point with ease. Looks a bit stiff and is dropping down boards.

Weston Richburg OL Colorado State
6034 300 9 31 3/4

Had a solid day. Technically sound and moves well. Strength deficient which hurts his game and ability to finish.

Senior Bowl: North Team Practice Page

Can we please nab Aaron Donald?

Eric Galko at Optimum Scouting on the North squad today:

The “winners” of the day for the North Practice were RB Charles Sims, WR Jared Abbrederis, OT Jack Mewhort, DE Trent Murphy, and LB Chris Borland.

Offensive Linemen

-Zach Martin of Notre Dame continued to be the best of the bunch of the offensive linemen. With great feet on the move and working downfield, along with transitioning to his second block, Martin showed the athleticism to fit at guard or tackle in multiple spots. Holding up well at the point of attack, including against powerful rushers James Gayle and Ra’Shede Hagemen consistently, Martin has shown the ability to play offensive tackle, which may be his best NFL position.

-The opposite of Martin, Cyril Richardson of Baylor struggled mightily and now opens the door for heavy question marks about his NFL fit. Consistently working to recover laterally, Richardson has been easily driven off balance by quick rushers, and then struggles to adjust his feet and gets driven back far too easily for a lineman his size. He’s likely struggled his way out of the Top 40 picks this week already.

-Ohio State’s Jack Mewhort had a very solid day, getting work at both tackle spots. He doesn’t win every time, but he’s a plus pivot blocker in the run game, exchanging his feet as he drives the outside shoulder of his defender, along with winning at the point of attack as a run blocker. He may not have the elite upside or plus kick slide to be a high pick, but Mewhort looks the part of an eventual starting offensive tackle.

-Of the interior linemen, Weston Richburg gets the slight edge over Tyler Larsen based off practice today. Both had their moments and their disappointments on Day Two. Richburg has plus interior strength and can hold up one-on-one against power rushers, but needs to maintain that hand position through his block, and can be beat by counter rushers inside. Larsen needs to win initially with hand placement and quickness, or else he struggles to keep leverage against both rushing linebackers and interior linemen.

-Finally, Michael Schofield of Michigan and Brandon Linder of Miami struggled all day. Schofield was aptly dubbed “Michael HOLD-field” by Ryan Allesio (@JinxFootball on twitter), and the description fits what he does consistently to not get beat. Linder has the size and strength in his upper half, but he plays on his heels too much, worried about the counter rush. He was blown up by an initial push by Minnesota’s Hagemen.

Defensive Linemen

-The best defensive lineman of the day was Stanford’s Trent Murphy. He had success consistently off the edge, playing with plus speed/bend around the edge, better than expected on film. He also was very active in exchanging his hands, disengaging at a high level against Seantrel Henderson and Jack Mewhort consistently. Some project him as a stand up, 3-4 outside linebacker, but Murphy may be best as a versatile defensive end in a 4-3 defense.

-Ra’Shede Hagemen is a prospect that’s easy to like, but tough to really fall in love with. He put four linemen on their ass today, including an initial push that forced Brandon Linder down, along with driving a double team block by Tyler Larsen and Michael Schofield that put all three down and would have collapsed a hole perfectly had it been team drills. However, he doesn’t slide and adjust laterally well enough for a rusher at his length, and gets completely controlled by lineman that can get underneath him initially. He’s a high upside, Top 20 talent that hasn’t developed enough to be a consistent threat in the NFL yet.

-Pittsburgh’s Aaron Donald was the big winner of Monday, and he was certainly solid on day two. The most impressive takeaway today was Donald’s ability at the point of attack against double teams, winning with lower balance and hand strength. His hand exchange is so quick laterally, and he consistently wins with his counter rush move if he can’t simply drive underneath after his first step.

Linebackers

-Chris Borland is really taking advantage of the week with another strong performance. He has a real feel for the game and minimizes his size limitations by using leverage and short area explosiveness to his advantage and disengaging quickly from blockers. Scouts have also been impressed with his pursuit effort as he’s been flying to the football all week.

-The lone “true” inside linebacker on the North, UCLA’s Jordan Zumwalt is taking advantage of his reps by showing fluidity in coverage and read and react ability versus the run to make tackles near or at the line of scrimmage. He gets into some trouble shedding if blockers absorb his initial pop as he isn’t the thickest or strongest but he’s a fighter. As expected, he’s the most fiery North player on the field and a vocal leader who teammates seem to respond to.

2014 Senior Bowl: Tuesday North Practice Notes

Tony Pauline notes on the Tuesday practice for the South squad:

Aaron Colvin DB Oklahoma
5113 186 9 1/4 31

Started off pretty well. Shows a lot of physical ability though he’s a bit slow between the ears. Went down with an injury midway through practice and the early diagnoses is a torn ACL.

Keith McGill DB Utah
6030 214 10 1/4 33

For the most part looked good. Not very quick but to his credit does a nice job getting his head around then locating the ball in the air. Smooth and plays with great balance. Still not sure he can stay at cornerback.

Will Sutton DL Arizona State
6006 315 9 5/8 30 5/8

Had several nice plays today where he beat blockers off the ball then quickly got into the backfield. Also had issues facing off against bigger linemen and was engulfed at the point on a number of occasions.

Deandre Coleman DL California
6050 315 10 1/4 34

Continues to show a lot of skill and one of the better surprises of the of the day. Fires off the snap with great first step, fast up the field and much more athletic than anyone thought.

Justin Ellis DL Louisiana Tech
6017 342 9 7/8 32 1/4

Started quickly and was very tough to block in the early going. It caught up to him later in practice yet has shown a lot of skill the past two days.

Daniel McCullers DL Tennessee
6067 348 10 5/8 35 5/8

Really improved his performance. Looked dominant at times, over-running blockers and getting into the backfield. Looks good in both drills and full scrimmage.

Caraun Reid DL Princeton
6021 301 10 1/4 32 5/8

Has shown flashes yet really has done nothing to stand out.

Chris Smith DL Arkansas
6011 266 9 5/8 34 1/8

Had a nice day both out of a three point stance as well the times he was asked to stand up over tackle . Displayed a lot of quickness, athleticism and pass rush skill.

Brent Urban DL Virginia
6066 298 9 7/8 33 5/8

Improved from yesterday and showed a variety of ability. The combination of size and athleticism is very, very impressive. Can bend off the edge and at the same time overpower blockers. Has immense upside.

Dee Ford LB Auburn
6021 243 10 32 3/4

WOWed scouts with his pass rush skill. Beat just about everyone around the edge showing incredible speed and quickness. Does a bit of wide edge rushing and a little one dimensional in that aspect.

Kyle Van Noy LB BYU
6032 244 9 1/2 32

Had a nice day. Showed well in pass rushing drills then played discipline, assignment football in full scrimmage.

Jeremiah Attaochu LB Georgia Tech
6032 252 9 3/8 32 7/8

Did well in drills. Looked quick footed in reverse and showed better than average cover skills. Surprisingly was handled in pass rushing drills when coming out of a three point stance.

Adrian Hubbard LB Alabama
6057 255 9 1/8 33 7/8

His athleticism is outstanding as is his ability to change direction and pursue the action. Two thing concerned me 1) a lack of strength at the point and 2) does not always play physical football.

Senior Bowl: South Team Practice Page

From Scott Wright at NFLDraftCountdown, FWIW:

The Next Jamie Collins

It’s still not totally clear what position Florida St. LB Christian Jones (6-3?, 234) is best-suited to play in the pros but he’s the type of dynamic athlete that you bring into the fold and figure out what to do with later. Jones is officially listed as an inside linebacker this week but he also saw action at both outside linebacker and defensive end during his college career. Blockers simply couldn’t handle Jones’ incredible speed and explosiveness as a pass rusher today and he also flashed a lighting quick spin move that proved to be extremely effective. Just ask Georgia TE Arthur Lynch. Each team may evaluate Jones differently based on their scheme but regardless of whether it’s an even or odd front there should be a place for a rangy playmaker with pro bloodlines such as Jones. In many ways Jones is a clone of Jamie Collins, who was a second round pick of the Patriots a year ago. Don't be surprised if other teams around the league now start searching for their very own version of Collins after the way he performed in the recent playoffs for New England.

Tuesday's South Team Senior Bowl Practice Report, NFL Draft - DraftCountdown.com

Interesting how quickly people are talking about finding the "next Jamie Collins". I'm not sold on Christian Jones being that guy, but we'll see.

Darren Page of DetroitLionsDraft is one of the better scouts around. His detailed notes from today's practices:

North Practice

Aaron Donald again had a productive day in terms of disruption. He drew lots of praise from the Falcons staff in early work against double teams at the point of attack, keeping his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and battling with his hands. Donald was as explosive as ever getting into gaps in 11 v. 11 and was still too much to handle for a majority of the practice.

Colorado State’s Weston Richburg put in another strong performance, one of the best performers in the morning practice in fact. I noted a fine first step into leverage and a big upper body aiding Richburg in 9 on 7. He showed even better in 1 v. 1’s. Richburg matched the length of Ra’Shede Hageman to stand him up once then controlled Aaron Donald with his hands in the next pass set. A few reps later he got into trouble by letting Hageman get into his chest and got bent back. Richburg’s ability to reset his feet and get himself out of trouble really impressed me though. I’m won over on this particular center.

Jack Mewhort is another blocker who shined in the morning session. His drive block ability and naturally-generated power earned James Gayle a berating from the Falcons staff in their first matchup. Mewhort has had no issues playing from the right side in Mobile, which shows some versatility to him.

Zack Martin put in another solid outing, but was beaten one time by West Virginia end Will Clarke. Clarke converted speed to power on the outside and landed his hands to the chest of Martin, bulling him backwards with the power he generated. The length of Clarke is a big asset and one he needs to use more often.

Louisville’s rush backer Marcus Smith is one I had high hopes for coming into the week, but he hasn’t flashed much of the explosiveness I expected. He also struggled to use his hands as a pass rusher today, generating little power in the process. He’s a rusher who is struggling in a phone booth and needs to learn to be less reliant on his natural athleticism.

Trent Murphy was slippery as a rusher, with blockers unable to lock him up with their hands.

South Practice

Dee Ford stole the show as a pass rusher. His explosiveness off the ball is no secret, but the South tackles had no answer for it. He dipped under the hands of Morgan Moses to win to the inside and did the same to Wesley Johnson around the corner. Ford blew back a tackle by converting speed to power on the edge on one rep. The way he flashes power in his hands makes me think he can be more than a one-dimensional pass rusher. That one dimension (speed rushes) was certainly enough to make Billy Turner look silly numerous times.

When he got reps with the defensive ends, Christian Jones made the type of plays that got onlookers excited. He spun past Jay Prosch for a “sack” in 1 on 1’s with the backs. He then did the same thing to Billy Turner, only to dip around the corner and beat the Bison tackle a rep later. Christian Jones’ season turned around when Florida State let him defend on the edge and he showed well there again today.

Big Gabe Jackson put in another solid day. He predictably showed well as a run blocker, once climbing to the second level and absolutely engulfing Telvin Smith. His ability to generate power from his upper body while maintaining balance to keep defenders from his chest was on display on a majority of his reps. Jackson is going to make a team very happy right away.

Will Sutton hasn’t been Aaron Donald like dominant by any means, but he’s flashed the type of quickness of his feet and with his hands to win on first contact. He whipped Gabe Ikard with a swim move once and was quick into contact and fired his hands well consistently. He still seems to be boom or bust on a snap by snap basis. In the shocker of the century, he ended up on the ground on a few matchups after stopping his feet and getting locked up.

The most disappointing showing of the entire day goes to North Dakota State tackle Billy Turner. I’ve described a few of his transgressions, all of which occurred while he was playing right tackle. He struggled to get out of his stance and get depth from the line of scrimmage, exposing him to speed. He lost his feet and ended up on his knees on a particular run block early in practice and struggled to come to a balance point many other times later on. He seemed completely overwhelmed by Dee Ford and Chris Smith on the edge.

Virginia defensive end Brent Urban had a day with little impact. He’s purely a gap-splitter with his explosiveness off the ball, but a lack of any kind of hand usage was evident today. His inability to work laterally also helped Blockers square him up easily. Urban also had a play where he lined up half a yard across the ball late in practice, which is not advisable.

The sheer size of Daniel McCullers made its mark throughout, but his struggles to locate the football showed up in run defense.

Morgan Moses was a bit up and down, but generally showcased his magnificent mobility for a man built like a redwood.

Joel Bitonio is still a bit of an enigma, but the stickiness to his hands has me intrigued.

Travis Swanson got the majority of his reps at offensive guard on the day and performed quite well.

Caraun Reid of Princeton struggled to make his mark today. He was predictable as a rusher and didn’t generate the type of power from his lower half to get pass blockers moved off the ball.

Deandre Coleman put in another forgettable outing, too often taking himself out of plays.
