The Patriots announced Tuesday they have signed wide receiver Greg Orton to the practice squad.

Orton, 27, spent part of 2011 and all of 2012 on the Broncos practice squad. The 6-foot-3, 199-pounder originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Bengals out of Purdue in 2009. He had stints with the Arena Football League’??s Spokane Shock and the United Football League’??s Omaha Knights before joining the Denver practice squad. Orton went to training camp with Denver this past summer.

Sounds like our red zone woes are cured. Never saw him play, so I can't offer up much in the way of commentary. Any Purdue or Spokane Shock fans in here?

Back in August from the Denver Post:

Among the 11 moves announced Sunday were to waive-injured Greg Orton.

The receiver was having a terrific training camp and had a legitimate chance to make his first NFL roster as the No. 5 receiver but he suffered a high ankle sprain on the final play of the Broncos' stadium scrimmage on Aug. 3. He never returned.

Hope this doesn't have anything to do with the health of our trio Dobson/Thompkins/Boyce.

From NFLDraftScout.com:
Positives - Long, lean build. Good height and long arms to snatch the ball out of the air against smaller cornerbacks. Does a lot of the little things well. Savvy route-runner who utilizes good body control and balance to generate separation as a route-runner. Reliable hands. Generally snatches balls out of the air with his big, soft hands, but will allow balls into his chest when expecting a big hit. Willing to go over the middle. Can track the ball over his shoulder for the fade. Uses his size and strength well downfield as a blocker

Negatives:
Bit of a one-trick pony as a possession receiver. Lacks deep speed. Marginal burst out of his snaps, despite being a good route-runner. Not the physical dominator against smaller corners that his size would indicate. Not an explosive leaper.

McDaniels was not with the Broncos when Orton was there, in case people were wondering..

Reiss has said he expects Dobson to be IR'ed.

I think he is here to give a true X-WR during practices over the next few weeks; he will take some of Dobson’s reps in practice to allow Dobson some extra rest for his injured foot. I could be wrong but his size is similar so he allows them to practice the game plan.

How ?

He wasn't touched during that play.

A stress fracture is one type of incomplete fracture in bones. It is caused by "unusual or repeated stress" and also heavy continuous weight on the ankle or leg. This is in contrast to other types of fractures, which are usually characterized by a solitary, severe impact.

It could be described as a very small sliver or crack in the bone; this is why it is sometimes dubbed "hairline fracture". It typically occurs in weight-bearing bones, such as the tibia (bone of the lower leg), metatarsals (bones of the foot), and less commonly, the femur.

It is a common sports injury, and most cases are associated with athletics

We need to resign Austin Collie. Watching Dobson limp off the field on that stretch play was painful. If its the same injury he missed games from, he is done for the year. No I am not a doctor. I did however play one on TV.

Isn't Quentin Sims still on the PS?

The only thing I've see him say on the matter is

Slightly different than expecting him to be put on IR.

I agree I think with 2 weeks Dobson can give it a go. There is no long term risk to playing on a stress fracture. It comes down to treatment and pain management. Brady played the end of the regular season and the playoffs with a similar injury back in 2010.

Either way I don't really see a connection between us signing Orton to the practice squad and Dobson being placed on IR.
